I am thinking about renting a car just for a day and thought I would use one of the rental agencies at one of the hotels. I was curious if anyone knows around what they hold on a credit card (not debit) for a deposit. Enterprise told me $250. I am only concerned because I only have two cards with $1100 between the two and do not want to max them out with holds (with hotels and a car).

The typical hold is about $250, at least on every rental I've done. It won't show up if you look at your on line transactions, but I do believe it lowers the credit limit available.

I rented from Dollar last October for one day, and there was a $350 hold.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will need to call around and find out specifics. I know it won't count as a charge on my card but having an available balance tied up is not something I really want.

Hertz seems to be $200+rental fee. Alamo is popular because they only hold the rental fee.

I had a $199 Hertz rental last week and they authorized $400, so this seems about right.

I just booked with Avis with a pick up at Aria and return to Mandalay Bay the following day. They only authorize the cost of the rental to the card, no other deposit according to the rep on the phone and their website. I just wanted the one day so I can hit up Valley of Fire, Fremont St and Stratosphere .

So I canceled and rebooked this reservation. I prepaid and therefore they were going to put a $200 hold on my card, not prepaying and they do not put a hold on it except for the cost of the rental. Interesting theory they have but it is what it is.
