As a destination? As strange as this may seem, it seems to me that the Strip, Downtown, and the off-strip properties all complement each other.

I keep thinking what exactly is it that makes me enjoy this place so much. I prefer to stay and play Downtown, yet look forward to visiting the Strip a couple of times during our stay to dine at 1st class restaurants, watch over the top shows, and sightsee. Then a day or two visiting the off-strip properties to catch a movie, take a shot at the favorable gambling options, and value buffets.

If all I had as an option was Downtown, I don't know if the magical appeal would be as great as it is now.

Maybe for you it would be the other way around. Or maybe it's something else out there that rings your bell.

How about you? Share what rings your bell in Vegas. If your favorite place to stay and play was the ONLY place in Vegas, would you still feel that magical attraction?

The excitement and anticipation of others around me, even on the flight in (and sometimes in the boarding-area before the flight) gets me goin'. There're some older ladies, talking about their favorite slots, some younger girls going for a bachelorette party, some younger guys already trying to hit on them and of course, even the older creepy guys keeping to themselves who'll take the bus (so they don't get long-hauled or have to tip anyone) from McCarran straight downtown to get their 3/2 BJ and full-pay VP play on!!!! (I kid... I kid...) There's also couples of all ages, as well, headed in for a fun time. When I arrive I always marvel at how quickly we all get off the plane and move towards baggage and ground-transportation and conversely, always cracks me up how slow we all seem to move on the return trip!

What rings my bell? Since I have the opportunity to visit once, sometimes twice a month, I decided 6 years ago to stay at my favorite property and concentrate my business there. It wasn't an easy choice, as I've stayed downtown at the Golden Nugget and on the Strip at Wynncore and Bellagio an awful lot. Over the years (since '88), I've stayed at most every major property in town, but I've really found that "being known" on a property REALLY has it's advantages. I'm not a big gambler, so my way of getting "noticed" is being a very frequent guest of a medium sized joint (Hard Rock). I like knowing many of the staff member's names and them knowing mine. It's a hoot when four-(4) of the valet guys run over to open my door, get my bag, park my vehicle right-up front and that I can chat with briefly them about the birth of a new child or a promotion or other things going on in their lives. Same thing at VIP reception and at the bars... I'm often upgraded into some of specialty suites, my drink is sitting on the bar as I walk-up and other things that just make me feel really special.

Though I stay exclusively at the Hard Rock, I sure wouldn't feel the same way about Las Vegas if it was the ONLY place in town. I make it a point to get out and visit all the other places and that's still a HUGE part of the "attraction" for me. For the most part, each place has it's own "character and clientele". I like the upscale joints as much as I like the sleezier joints. I enjoy the shows, the entertainment, the food, playing a bit and just the whole ambiance. I enjoy watching the people who are in pay-grades far above mine and those who are just acting like it for a couple days, as well as the youngsters just tearin'-up the town. About the only thing I don't like are the crabby people... GO HOME... you spoil the energy that is Las Vegas. No I'm not ALWAYS in the best of moods, but when I'm in Vegas I sure am... it's a party town... live it up.

What makes Vegas such a special destination for me?

Some people need a secluded beach with blue water to escape the monotony of life. Give me Las Vegas! As soon as I get on that plane to LAS I feel at ease and forget the rigors and stress of the American dream. I guess you could say I become a "kid in a candy store". The blinking lights, the sounds of jack pots being won, the harmony of screaming and laughter filling the air. The smorgasbord of people you can watch and talk to. The wide variety of foods that can be had. The allure that with that right hand, roll of the dice, push of a button, could change ones life forever. To me, this is the "Dream".

We have always stayed on the strip. But on this trip we are going to venture out and view some of these resorts people have high praise for such as The M Resort, and Red Rock Casino. Its not that we are tired of the Strip but more as we want to take in all that Las Vegas has to offer. It is the Disney World for adults.

It is like a McDonald's playland for adults!

Drinking, gambling, no bed time, no wake up time, very few kids, all you can eat buffets everywhere, great rooms, and all the noises and smells that come with the visit.

It is the ultimate playground and it's just great when you step back into the casino and hear the sounds of winning (for some) and the unforgettable perfume aroma that greets you as you walk in the door, just walking on the Strip especially at night and just seeing the lights and it's a sight that never gets tiresome. I agree that Strip, Downtown and off Strip do complement each other, I prefer the Strip and always base myself on or just off the Strip but I do enjoy Downtown especially at night, there is something for everyone to enjoy and coming from the UK, we have nothing that come's anywhere near it.

Vegas is more of a "state of mind" than a place.
Not sure it is really what is there so much as how one feels when in Vegas.

There are several reasons Vegas continues to appeal to me nearly 2 1/2 decades after my first trip.

I am a night person, if I didn't have a job my sleeping hours would be 7/8 AM - 3/4 PM. Vegas is built for people like me. Even a large city like Chicago is very limited in terms of options open after 2/3AM besides a few late license bars and some dive dinners/ FF joints.

I like to be able to relax, drink, and be able to experience several different places and things without having to drive anywhere.

I don't gamble as much as I have in the past. My gambing over the last several years has been limited to Vegas. I look forward to my trip, mainly because gambling is not an everyday/week/month thing. I can hit some blackjack, video poker or live poker, get some action, not jeopardize my day to day finances and allow me to do other things with my time the other 50 weeks I'm at home or vacationing elsewhere.

I get all of these benefits at a relatively low cost. Rooms are either comped, or very cheap vs. a standard room in the rest of county (and much cheaper than most major cities). Even with the cut back in flights, several carriers fly regularly from Chicago, and beyond last minute bookings you can almost always book for $300-$400, sometimes less, for most times of the day. It's also convenient to use as a in/out destination point while taking a trip to California, NPs in Utah/Arizona/Nevada/California. There are many places to see and explore within 4-6 hours of Vegas. Have a fun night or two on the way in/out, and then explore nature and/or the west coast in between.

My brother moved to Vegas to start the decade, so I have a relatively new and important reason to continue to make Vegas a once a twice a year destination.

I just love everything about Vegas, the same as everyone said. This will be our 24 or maybe its 25th year to go down. We can only go once a year and I get as excited now as I did way back then. We own a Timeshare at Polo Towers and love it. This year we are comped at MGM for 4 nights and then we will be in the timeshare for 3 weeks. We always go downtown a couple of times when we are there and then over to the Rio, sometimes Sam's Town. We always use the bus or walk around. Hubby says he would never drive there, this way he can drink and not worry about driving. A little over 2 weeks we will be there and then it is time to have fun and relax.

Something about arriving and seeing and hearing the belligio fountains is so amazing. Vegas is just such a great experience.

"I've wined and dined with kings and queens, and I've slept in alley's eating pork n beans" - Dusty Rhodes

That's how I feel about Vegas. I've been to LV with almost no money at all (just a stop in a long road trip, not the destination) and I've been there for a week with plenty of money to spend. Either way there is an excitement in the air, there is a real energy in Las Vegas that I equate to going to a big sporting event. Most people seem excited to be there, and that energy is infectious. There are so many great things that make Vegas amazing, but if you want me to name just one, it's the energy.

I like the sights and sounds of the town as I walk around and bask in the glory that is the American Dream. Nowhere else can you see people from all walks of life happy and living like kings

One of the best feelings in the world is parking the car and rolling the suitcase to the casino.... And 2-4 days later I'm going in the opposite direction already planning the next trip as I make the walk back to the car....

The possibilities and the optimism. We got to the Caribbean frequently as well. I can pretty much plot the day out and be 90% accurate. Coffee, breakfast, beach, lunch, beach, pool/bar, dinner, etc, etc. repeat. Vegas on the other hand, you can go to breakfast and get sidetracked until midnight. You can walk down the street to the next casino and end up downtown. Vegas moves us in a way that other places cannot. I never know exactly what is going to happen on my Vegas trips. I don't know who I will meet, what new things I will find, what may appeal to me, etc.

Vegas is ubiquitous is ways that other destinations just cannot match. That is what keeps me coming back, the dream of it all.

There is no place like it, IN THE WORLD!!! Where else do you have a destination where the theme is "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas?!" They encourage fun, and it's all crammed into a 4.2 mile strip!
For me, it's a complete break in reality, for a guy that has the same routine every day, to take a break and do sports betting, table games, free booze, clubs and hotel rooms everywhere for "extra fun", is just the best. I think Captainron62 (above) described it bets. Each day is a new adventure! Most people (that don't like Vegas) think it's the lure of getting rich, I am smarter than that! Each trip I go with $1,000 cash. This is for food, games, cabs, and other stuff. Sometimes I come home with extra money, sometimes I don't. I ALWAYS leave there after having a blast.

On a side note, sometimes I will in my hometown, uasually in a mall, and I smell something that smells like the lobby at Paris, or the lobby at the Mirage. Does this ever happen to you?

Oh my God, where to start. What do we love so much about Las Vegas that makes us coming back for more. I'll just make a list because I can't imagine writing it down like a story (and make sense at the same time)

    - The climat, great temperatures for about 8 months a year. Sun, sun and more sun. Low air humidity
    - Beautiful surroundings. The most beautiful view I've ever seen: overlooking the Strip from a distance with all the lights, the mountains and sun going down in the background
    - The diversity of the area: Lake Mead, Mount Charleston, the Strip, the mountains, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon
    - Forget about New York, Las Vegas is the real "city that never sleeps"
    - The party scene, the gambling, the shopping, all those great restaurants, the most beautiful shows and the most luxurious resorts
    - The wonderful friends we have over there
    - The really affordable homes
    - Somehow, all the stress over everyday life instantly disappears as soon as we land at McCarran.
    - The sounds of all the slotmachines

I could go on for a while. My wife and I both feel the same, we hope to be able to retire in Vegas in the future. Since we're from Holland it won't be possible to live there full time but we would be perfectly happy if we could spend about 6 months a year there. 3 years ago found our dream property close to Red Rock Canyon. Missed it because of the 9 hour time difference with Holland. It was sold just before we called the real estate agent to tell him we wanted to pay the asking price.

Las vegas is a place my wife and I could just hang out without a care in the world, just like when we were kids. We don't have to answer to anyone and don't have to be on a timer.

If I had to sum up Vegas in one word: fughettabouit!

that about sums it up! typical Vegas trip for me starts with a rough outline of things I'd like to do... day one might begin with 'let me check out this casino for an hour or two' and then not leaving until the next day...
