So please do not give me the moralistic point of view... just want to see what would happen if...

My wife and I are renewing our wedding vows in Las Vegas in April. We have 16 people coming, including my 20 year old daughter. She shared with my wife (her stepmom) that she could get a fake ID in college so that she can at least join the women on the trip to a renewal bachelorette party at Gilleys that is being planned. She doesn't plan on drinking like a college student, but just one or two.

Any have experience doing this? If she is caught, could she be arrested or would they just simply throw away the ID? What about the people who come with her?

Any thoughts would be appreciated, but please leave out the judgement.

    Thanks

Do you really want someone who is paying $$$$ for college go out into the world with a conviction on their record and trying to get a job when everyone else has no convictions?

I can't speak for vegas police, but where I am you will be arrested.

My experience has been (as a bouncer and as a witness to others with fake IDs many moons ago) that it all depends on the group of people that person is with.. if it's a bunch of people trying to get in and under 21 they may get harassed and if they mouth off - cops called. But for the most part, it's a "really? get out of here" type of reaction.

Given the situation you've described, I suspect that the ID won't be too closely regarded. And if it is - it will likely just be a "please leave" type reaction if discovered.

That all said, it's a misdemeanor in Vegas to hold a fake ID for purposes of gambling, drinking, etc. But be careful.. :) I think it's six months of jail time and/or up to $1,000 in fines.

    depends on a lot.

how old does she look? how good is the fake?

honestly most restaurants don't even check ID unless you look really young. but you're talking about a bar, there's going to be closer scrutiny.

bouncers in Vegas have seen them all. if she looks young and has a sketchy looking ID, she'll be turned away.

but unless she has an incredible fake, don't even try a club.

I mostly agree with abrolsma, but I don't think a fake ID is gonna fly in vegas. Does she have a 21 year old friend she resembles? or is there someone in the group that resembles her?
one time we had someone that forgot their ID - we were all carded, but as soon as "person A" was carded he slipped the same ID to "person B" who was last in line. by the time all other IDs were checked it was a non issue.

i'd try one of those routes.

Side note - do you even have to be 21 to enter gilleys?

There is no answer to this. The law is pretty specific. Laws are that way. But you never know how they are going to be enforced. In this case it is logical to think it is just confiscation and a boot if found out, but what if that particular joint is under enhanced scrutiny because of previous situations? And 10 people could tell you they went to the exact same place and did the exact same thing, but that's not proof of anything.

I had a fake ID for about 8 months before my 21st. And it was a damn good one, so good in fact that at the eventual trial of the guy who made them, a witness for the state took a long long time on the stand before choosing which of two was fake; IDs are so much more sophisticated now.

Sorry, you have some here who are afraid of their own shadow, some think they're superhuman; none have a crystal ball. Booze fraud in Vegas ain't exactly like taking the Mona Lisa. But keep her out of the casino, they take that shit seriously. If it's a good fake -- a good fake -- go for it. But remember ... caveat emptor.

I got caught with a fake right before my 21st birthday. The bar tender confiscated it, I thought no biggie. Months later my insurance company called me. They'd done a spot check on my driving record and discovered I'd had a suspended liscense. I was so smart that I hadn't changed anything on my ID except my birthday...so the bouncer handed it over to the cops and eventually the DPS suspended my liscence. I never knew about the suspension b/c my ID had an old address on it. I had a warrant out for my arrest, and my insurance company (St Farm) dropped me instantly. I had a huge mess to sort out both legally, as well as finding an insurance company that would touch me with a ten foot poll. So stupid when I think about it now. Granted this was in 2001, I'm not sure what would happen now...but at the end of the day there's a LOT of bad things that can happen vs. only one good thing that could potentially happen. And is that one good thing (her getting into the bar) really worth it?

Kind of what everyone else here as said.

If it's a good fake ID and she could pass for being 21, why not. They're not going to hold her at the door if they realize it's a fake and call the cops. They'll just tell her to leave.

That being said, she needs to make sure she's not acting like an idiot when inside..in other words, don't draw attention to herself. If she starts drawing attention to herself then chances are she might get carded again but this time they'll be looking a little closer at her ID. I think it'll be tough for her to get in though as I would imagine these bouncers and door staff know what they're looking for.

If she has the fake ID already, she's probably used it a few times and will be comfortable with it..Her College bars mayeven be stricter in looking beyond the birthdate. If she acts natural should be a piece of cake.I think worst case scenario is denied entrance.Just can't see legal issues over this from law enforcement..Really LVPD has nothing better to do? This must happen so often on Spring Break, just can't see the place even confiscatiing the ID.

It would probably be a better idea for her to be the "designated adult" at the party. It might get her free soft drinks/bar snacks all night, and she can always sneak a few quaffs from others' drinks when nobody is looking. Better that than the chance of bad things happening that are a pain to sort out, as detailed above.

Let be real here for a second....

You pass that ID along to many of the oblivious bartenders on the Strip or some random employee in a convenience store...they will look at your birthday and that's about it. Some people just wont give a FUDGE....esp in a convenience store.

However, group a lot of the ideas listed above together. You have to compare it to a real same-state ID and see how they differ. If you can hold it next to a real ID and see a dramatic difference...then there is a problem.

Also, here is what the law in Nevada says:

    Penalties

The sentence for violating Las Vegas fake ID laws depends on whether the defendant simply possessed the identification information or tried to sell or give it away:

    Possessing

It is a category C felony in Las Vegas to possess false identification for the purpose of forgery, credit or debit card fraud, or online fraud. The punishment includes one to ten years in Nevada state prison and maybe a $10,000 fine.

***** If the sole purpose of possessing the fake ID is to make the holder appear old enough to gamble, drink or buy cigarettes, then it's just a misdemeanor in Las Vegas carrying up to six months in jail and/or up to $1,000 in fines.

Otherwise, possessing an ID for the purpose of establishing a fake identity in Nevada is a category E felony in Las Vegas carrying one to four years in prison. However, it's typical for the judge to grant probation with no prison in these cases.

And here is a mindless link on "How to Spot a Fake" but its more of a descent read the anything....

There may be more consequences for those who are of legal age knowingly providing someone with a fake ID, or knowingly being an accomplice to a person using a fake ID.

Don't do it, it's not worth the risk. Not only will she be a criminal, but the whole group will be criminals for knowingly aiding and abetting a minor.

If I was in that position I would try the fake id and when I was in that position I had a fake id from the state of Minnesota (they were not too bright back then or today either)

Speaking from experience, it WILL NOT work to get into clubs. it will work totally fine with the CWs on the floor, most deallers and pit bosses too.

And where is she getting this ID? is it a fake (novelty) ID? or is it just a friend that looks like her? does she know someone that works at the DMV?

Also, trying to use the ID of someone who looks like you can be considered identity theft.

There was a guy in China that would make fake IDs with any information you wanted on it...they would scan, had holigrams, the whole works...looked nearly perfect! You would just order them through his website. But they still didnt work with bouncers...think about it...they look at hundreds of IDs a day...the slightly abnormality will be caught.

I say dont risk it...wait till she is 21 so she can enjoy Vegas without the nervous thoughts in the back of her head of getting caught

Are you willing to roll the dice? You never know what might happen. She might get in fine, she might get the ID confiscated, they might call the cops, etc... Risk vs reward here.

If the worst case scenario did happen and they did call the cops, that would be a super debbie downer moment over something so small.

A 19 year old close family friend came to our wedding in Vegas, and attended the bacherlorette night at Marquee Nightclub and had no problems with her fake ID. She used it all week, so it is quite possible to get into clubs.

Here's a related question I'm just curious about. Around here we have three local casinos, and all have "checkpoints" at the door. On a busy night they will have several security officers there, one will be directing the could-not-pass-for-under-21-on-dark-night folks (like me, unfortunately) :( directly through one of the turnstiles, and those who look maybe 30 or under into the ID check line.

They use some kind of a scanner to check IDs. From what I've noticed, it seems like the scanner test is the most important thing they check for. It looks like all they do is ask for ID, put it in the scanner, wait a few seconds, hand the ID back, and motion the customer through.

What do those scanners really do? Are they hooked into some kind of central computer or database, or do they just do a computer-aided scan of the license to see if it shows signs of being fake?

New licenses with the strip on the back have the coded information on them in the same way that credit cards do. A fake wouldn't have any info on it, presumably.

First time I went to Hogs and Heifers I had to show ID even though 40 plus, as always I had my drivers licence with me and it was in a wallet I showed it and the doorman told me to take it out of the wallet and he put it under a light and left it there for a few seconds, I'm assuming to check if it was real but at my age why would I be faking ID.
