I'm currently poking around for my next trip in mid-April to early May. The weekend of Apr 17th and Apr 24th are both pretty reasonable. But the May 1st weekend is through the roof. (Like $450/night on Fri and Sat for a Grand King at MGM). I checked the convention schedule--and nothing really significant. No college sports. NBA Finals are still a month away (ish). Google doesn't really show me much of note.

I've no "need" to go that weekend, so it's really irrelevant. But I just found it interesting without any obvious driver of demand....but I could easily be overlooking something obvious.

    Da-Da-Duh-Dunta-Da...Da...Da........Da-Da-Duh-Dunta-Da...Da...Da

Let's see how horrible of a hint that is...:evillaugh

And I'm not sure if that's the real reason for the price hike, either.

Here's a bigger hint of what I'm thinking, Illinois highway signs will also help direct me to a place where I can bet on it.

Mayweather is rumored to be fighting that weekend at MGM Grand. He has fought their that weekend last several years.

Ahhh, yeah. That makes a lot of sense.

I'm still baffled by tringlomane's suggestion, but that might have to do with it being 4 in the morning.

Thats also KY Derby Weekend, not a huge sporting event for Vegas like SB weekend, but many of the hotels will plan marketing events around it. Pools tend to kick off summer party season
first weekend of May. Throw in a fight weekend and you hit critical mass for a high rates weekend.

I would guess its the combination of Cinco de mayo and the possibility of a Mayweather/Pacman fight. Any Mayweather fight is a big draw for the city, but that fight will be enormous

It is also "Lei Day", so downtown will be busier and more expensive than normal.

If this happens, it's going to be crazy. I'm hoping it does.

Just searched around and found that Pacman has already reserved May 2 at MGM for his next fight. All the buzz is that he wants Mayweather, but he will fight someone else that weekend if Mayweather declines. so I would say the fight (and the party weekend) is the answer for the OP. I was at the MGM this past September for the Mayweather fight and the crowds were insane. Most of them weren't even at the actual event. The big name boxers just seem to bring the fans to fill up the whole town

Plus Journey will be playing The Joint at the Hard Rock on Friday and Saturday that weekend... pretty sure that'll account for thousands.

My birthday is May 1st...and I'm coming to Las Vegas to celebrate. I'm sure that's what all the hype is for!! But seriously..UK fanatic is correct. I have a friend that works PR for Pacman, and he is scheduled to fight at the MGM on May 2nd. If Mayweather doesn't fight him, he will still fight on that day. I usually stay at the MGM, but booked at a CET property because they didn't seem to have the 'block' on yet.

Shows how out of touch I am on the topic--with no real interest in boxing, it really slipped my mind to check on that. I think it'd be fun to be in town on a super busy weekend like that.
