Interesting, short interview about the efforts the city will make to build on the 40 million visitor mark exceeded this year:
    http://lasvegassun.com/blogs/kats-report/2014/dec/28/events-boss-40-million-visitors-not-enough/?_ga=1.95511641.456349432.1416160398

The article says the plan is to bring in more festivals. With the success of EDC the past two years, as well as new event centers/spaces at the north and south ends of the Strip, I guess this plan isn't a surprise. Music festivals seem like the obvious choice, but I wonder what else the city will try and bring in

EDC for the electronic crowd, Rock In Rio for the rock/pop crowd...i can assume theyll make one for the country music crowd too some time.

They have had some country music award shows (and possibly concerts along with? drawing a blank at the moment....) and they do usually have some country concerts during rodeo....

Yeah, I can't imagine they would start a separate festival for country music fans. Some of them already come out there for the awards show televised from Vegas. And the bulk of country fans already have their festival every summer in Nashvegas

This probably means higher room rates on average. Festival vistors don't spend the amount of money on gambling as visitors who come to Vegas for the gambling do. They will have to make money in different ways: higher room rates, increasing prices for food & beverage, concert tickets, etc. For the die hard Vegas fans this might also mean more black out dates on offers....

Agreed. I think the obvious goal is to get more people to come to the city and leave behind their money. And I don't think the hotels care whether visitors leave their money in the form of gambling, room costs, booze, or whatever. The idea of more festivals seems consistent with the recent emphasis on more shopping, nightlife, and dining

About the time all of this would get into high gear, it's possible a few new hotel/casinos will come online and increase the inventory and adjust the pricing of the other hotels.

For a few months I have wondered if the DT hotels that closed towers or rooms would re-open those rooms? Seems like with more visitors than ever coming to vegas, the capacity would be there to open up those towers again

They would hit their goals faster if they weren't driving away casino customers.

I'm just not sure the numbers support your claim...

    http://gaming.unlv.edu/reports/NV_1984_present.pdf

Though gaming is no longer the largest slice of the pie, the numbers, with the exception of the recession years, appear to be on the up and up. It's taken a while to get back to pre-recession levels and the growth for sure has slowed, but...

During the recession, visitor volume was way down and corresponding gaming numbers dropped, but to try and tie that to "running off gamblers" is a stretch I can't support. Also during the time period of this information, gaming competition arrived in some form in almost every other state in the nation.

    Good read.

I am all for them expanding their focus on whatever can bring in the crowds. Obviously that means the days of the recession comps where free rooms and free play were commonplace would not return but that's ok. Those whose play warrants it will still be taken care of. Even if my offers went away completely I wouldn't stop going to Vegas.

I expect to see another economic fall in 2015. Sees like every 7 years there is, and 2015 is 7 years.

    Exactly.

My offers dried up from CET and MGM because of the 18mo gap in trips. V/P still comes through with offers and while not great on the freeplay or food credits the rooms are free for three nights and casino rate for the other one or two nights. So I will glady take them but if they dried up? I'd still take my happy ass out for trips!

especially given the conventional wisdom is 8.2% stock market growth, that's like the announcers saying the kicker is the most accurate in NFL history, or an SI cover. Definite jinx. Then again who knows with low oil prices giving everyone extra money to spend.

That would be my moment of farewell. The offers make it financially interesting to go to Vegas. If I have to pay full price for everything, I won't be coming back until another recession hits Vegas. For the money I have to spend to go to Vegas for 8 nights paying full price, I can have at least two 14 day trips to great 5-star All-Inclusive resorts at other destinations. It would be a smart decision budget wise anymore.

I'm an old and frugal traveler.
I'm not a fan of crowded Vegas.
There is nothing exciting for me in crowds. That is more for the young.

Buses ( my main mode of transportation) are impacted. The Deuce gets like a sardine can.
Even the residential routes get detoured and altered during festival times.

My last trip the two-for-one offer from the D at a normal $34 jumped to $106 because of the Life is Beautiful festival and I could not beat it downtown. I ended up at Planet Hollywood on my son's CET freebie room.

Then on the weekend the square behind the D hosted a Heavy Metal something or other. A festival wanna be I guess.
My comped 4 Queens weekend room, which had been positioned to be quiet, was suddenly very loud and uncomfortable from 5 PM (rehearsal) until into the night. Of course, it happened on a night when I needed to catch up on my sleep and I wanted an early evening nap to prepare for an early morning session of poker at the Golden Nugget.

I used to think that the crowds would bring more, "its only Money" tourists to the poker tables, but I have not seen that happening. I think festival people stay at their party and forget the poker..
I'd still go, but if Vegas became too expensive, I'd head out to Laughlin for a week or so of my time and perhaps spend the rest out Boulder Highway.
Boulder is rarely affected by festivals and hordes of tourists. It is pretty steady and much the flavor of what Vegas was decades ago with room and food and entertainment prices that are quite easy to pay.
