I've never stayed at the Grand, but Nugget is smack dab in the middle of FSE...'the four corners', so to speak.
All things being equal, I'd stay there.
But, comped at the Grand beats paying for a Nugget room!

I haven't stayed at either, but would prefer the Golden Nugget due to where it is located. I wish they would put more lighting on the street The Grand is on. I was out at around 1AM with my sister-in-law and we wanted to check it out, but when we looked down the street towards The Grand, it was just too dark and we didn't feel comfortable walking there at night.

Maybe we are just babies, though...lol

As a "home-base", I don't think it's even close... GN is the center of downtown and the "class" of the area. That's not to say, many don't prefer other properties for various reasons... they certainly do, but the GN is the one downtown joint that has "everything" so to speak. Personally, I don't think the short walk to Downtown Grand is in any way ominous and though I've seen their room product, I've not stayed there. It's a fine place, not 100% casino driven, but they're struggling a bit and have reacted to that, as most do, by limiting hours of operation for restaurants, bars, etc.

For me it would depend on the cost.

I probably shouldn't be rating hotels since I only sleep, shower and shave in them.

Thanks everyone! Leaning towards the Golden Nugget. I was thinking the same thing about walking at night towards the Grand. Also I was reading that the GN has no resort fees.

The Nugget doesn't have a resort fee but they do have a Fremont Street Experience fee if I recall right. Same charge by a different name.

I haven't stayed there recently though so maybe someone else can confirm that.

I believe the FSE fee at the GN is still only $5. If you can afford the star $ get a Rush Tower room. Well worth it.

We just got back from four nights at the GN, Carson Tower. Last stayed there over Halloween, also four nights. We've stayed at the Downtown Grand twice since it reopened last November. We like both, for different reasons. The Downtown Grand feels more like a "boutique hotel" than a big casino hotel. The rooms are fresh and comfortable. The casino is pleasant and not loud. However, there's not much going on at the property and there's no hot tub. The Golden Nugget has a lot going on and always seems busy. The pool is open year round and is heated, plus there's a nice large hot tub for soaking. We like the Carson Tower rooms, and even turned down a free upgrade to the Gold Tower this trip. They are the farthest from Fremont Street, and if you get one south facing you have a nice view of the strip. The casino at the Golden Nugget can be so loud it's intolerable. Too many machines too close together with the volume turned to the max. We don't gamble there much as a result. Their "Fremont Street Experience" fee is five dollars a night plus tax. The Downtown Grand's resort fee is now eighteen dollars a night plus tax, so about twenty bucks on top of the room rate.

Either place is nice, just depends on what you're looking for. I wouldn't worry about the short walk the the Grand. It's well lit and only a block.

That is a hard one. I really like both properties. The Golden Nugget is more standard and very nice for downtown. Also, it has more eating choices and it is in the middle of Downtown. The Grand is brand new and I love it there. Also, you have Triple George across the street and Pizza Rock (my two favorite restaurants downtown). I am much luckier at the Grand as well. But both are good.

If you want free rooms without resort fees in the future then the GRand. I am sure free rooms will come from there while I never get a darn thing offerred to me at the nugget, except the usual internet sale price on rooms. I like the quiet of the grand and ease to get on a table game, plus all employees are very friendly. Nugget is just too crowded for most of the time.

I have gambled at the Golden Nugget for years and they give you next to nothing in comps (at least for me). The Grand has been very generous as far as dinners via my host to Triple George and free tickets to plays at the Smith Center.
