Educate thecarve on Downtown: Non-Casino Eats

I'm hoping to do my first DT trip in the next few months (probably early spring). And while I'm there, I'd like to check out some of the non-casino restaurants in the area. I know there are plenty of good places right there on Fremont. But I can easily use the search function to get recommendations for restaurants there. The surrounding joints don't seem to have as many VMB reviews.

So, what's good? I'll eat any type of cuisine. And I'd love to get recommendations for all price points. The only real criteria I'll stipulate are (a) good food and (b) a fairly easy walk from the Fremont (and nearby) casinos.

Eat (Carson and 7th) has great breakfast and lunch selections, reasonably priced. My wife is a pancake connoisseur - she says their pancakes blow Dupars' out of the water...

Pizza Rock across from The DT Grand has good pizza. I haven't had anything else there yet but others on here have mentioned they have good food. I enjoyed the food at Hennessy's as well. http://www.hennesseyslasvegas.com/ Been to Mickie Finnz's a couple times and was not impressed.

I'd never heard of Chicago Joe's so looked them up. Their menu and prices look okay but it's not what I would call a "fairly easy walk from Fremont". Might be a good one if you had a car though.

I ate at Cous Cous Mediterranean cafe on Fremont street. It was good and quick and pretty cheap. I got a swawrma and hummus.

 

I think it all depends on what type of food you want and how much you want to pay for it. "fast" food type but not a Mcd or subway lover? The lanai at the Cal serves "Hawaiian" style food (hamburger steak plates, chicken wings, teriyaki beef, etc.). The Aloha Specialties café on the 2nd floor promenade (between MSS and the Cal) also serves Hawaiian style food. Want a huge breakfast? HHAGG at the Plaza serves huge portions. Hot dog? The D has a coney island hot dog place that is open 24/7. "upper" scale restaurants include Magnolia's at the 4Q, Redwood Grille at the Cal, Tony Roma's (not really upscale though) at the fremont. Other eateries are in the GN, Golden Gate, even the Fremont has a fast food type take out joint that serves Chinese and other foods.

So I guess it depends on how much you want to spend and what types of food you want (fast food, sit down restaurant, etc.). Also not sure what you mean by non casino eats, you mean restaurants that aren't in the hotel/casinos? Or restaurants that aren't actually run by the hotel/casino?

 

For an excellent breakfast head to MTO Cafe which is a reasonably easy walk from the Plaza. You can save a few $$ by purchasing a Restaurant.com certificate.

One restaurant on my radar is The Pantry, located in the Downtown Container Park. I will be posting a review tomorrow.

Another option is the recently opened and upgraded El Sombero Cafe which is about 7/10ths of a mile from the Plaza on S. Main St.

If you are into vegetarian/vegan food, check out Simply Pure in the Downtown Container Park. A Groupon is currently available.

Makikiboy - by "non-casino", I mean not in a casino. I figure it's pretty easy to find info on casino restaurants. Less so the "non-casino" places.

Westie - I'm a carnivore so I never specifically go looking for veggie/vegan joints. But good food is good food. I certainly won't avoid a place just because they don't serve meat. Also, many, many thanks for all the reviews you post and all your great food porn! I'm sure I'll be stalking your posts prior to my trip.

Le Thai has better than average food and count me as another who thinks Pizza Rock is fantastic. One option to avoid, Nacho Daddy - average at best.

 

Definitely the triple George. Old school vegas feel, dimly lit, white tablecloths, a complimentary relish tray and excellent service.

 

That clears it up a little, unfortunately most of the downtown restaurants are in the hotel casinos. Some of the ones I know of (that aren't part of a hotel casino) are near the EC, the pizza place, a number of eating places in the container park (http://downtowncontainerpark.com/dine/) and a few in the neonopolis and by the DTG (hogs and heifers). Sorry, I don't shy away from the FSE very much

 

I'm no downtown expert but i love me some Pizza Rock.

 

More votes for Triple George Grill, Pizza Rock, Carson Kitchen and Eat. i would also add Nacho Daddy and The Perch. On my list to try are Park on fremont, La Comida, MTO Cafe, Cehffinis and Big Ern's BBA.

I am very curious about O-face Donuts but can't comment on them since I haven't been there.

I had appetizers at Park this summer, out on the patio, and they were surprisingly good. Service was also not bad at all. I liked it much better than my late night Nacho Daddy experience.

Absolutely agree. Triple George is an excellent steakhouse, IMHO way better than Vic and Anthony's at the GN. It's on Third Street right across from the DTG.
