Curious to hear what VMBers use as a general rule when buying in for select games. What buy-in do you think is necessary to ride the swings both up and down without significant bust percentage.

Roughly as a $10 (+5$/win BJ guy), Craps pass line 3x odds and 6/8 or inside numbers for min with 1 unit pressure each bet, and generally 10$ 3card/LIR player these are my numbers.

    BJ - $150-200 (probably 10-15 bets)
    Craps - $200-300
    LIR - $100
    3card - $100-150
    VP (quarters) - $20-100
    Slots (generally .50$/pull - $20.00

What do y'all think; too low for most or reasonable? Curious for some of the slot players how many bets they buy-in for?

Should really go by units...dollars mean nothing since everyone plays a different level

    3 card/VP/Slots - All too low.

My suggestion - try some games online and see how long you last with these amounts.

That's close to what I play, too. I'll add Pai Gow Tiles - 12-15 units ($300 on a $25 table).

I agree with BreakEven that they are too low to ride the wave but I'm there for fun and playing knowing they are too low.

The craps buy in is too low. You have $64 on the table playing as you described(assuming a $10 table). Point seven out would quickly eat through your bank roll.

I think 10-15 times your unit bet in LIR is about right. There will be times that you don't make it past 10 hands but then it is time to try something else. LIR is all about bankroll. 75% of the hands are losers, however if you can hit the other 25% hard you can walk away up.

    For blackjack, figure on 20x your base-bet... If that's $10, bring $200.
For 3-card, I would stick with $200 or so, assuming a $5-$5-$5 bet each hand... $300 if you go with $10-$10-$5 (which is a better way to play the game, btw).
For UTH, bring $200 to a $5 table...if you play 'trips' every hand, better bring $300.

This is what I buy in with:

    BJ: 20 units ($100-$200 at a $5-$10 table)
VP: $100 at a quarter game
    LIR: $100 playing $5-$5-$5

(However, I'm one of those who doesn't like being "felted" so I only let myself lose half of the buy-in. If I get down by half, it's time to take a walk, get a drink, whatever.)

3 Card: $100 which is all I'll let myself lose per trip on this fun but infuriating game! I didn't even play it last trip (which might be why I came back with more money than usual).

Since this is a negative expectation game, why is that a better way to play?

    20 units on blackjack
$100 on quarter VP if betting max coins

I don't play those others games

    Great attachment, BayouBengal.
I always thought a $400 bankroll was needed to play at a $10 craps table to not lose your shirt in 10-15 minutes, but now I see a professional giving the same advice. :)

Here you go my friend: http://vegasclick.com/gambling/basicbet.html

Notes: Blackjack, baccarat, and video poker assume proper strategy.
Craps assumes only Pass Line bets. Roulette assumes one even-money bet per spin.
Video poker and slots assume typical returns for Vegas machines.
VP and slot figures were rounded.

I guess length of time is the question. Of all games, I don't want length of time at 3CP. I never buy in for more than $200, and often I'll go by a table and throw $60 out there for four hands at minimum. It's more flighty than almost any other game, so I want in and out. Fast.

I love craps, but I try to limit my buy-in/session to $200, starting with place bets then doing pass/come if I like the table. However, I've bought in for as little as $80 and as much as $500 and am always ready to make like a tree and leave. Both $100 and $500 buy-ins keep me focused to try and make it work. I'm much more successful with those than any other. It may be mental mixed with dumb luck, but it's reality.

    UTH? $300 @ $5. BJ? At least $200 on a $10 table.

I agree. If I'm upping my bets, it's $10 for ante/play, only throwing 10 on PP if the getting's been good.

I think everyone has their own "system" on how much to buy in with. Whatever you feel comfortable with. As they also mentioned it also depends on how long you want to be there.

I usually have a $100 buy in at a craps table but if I lose $60 quickly I will get up and go elsewhere. I usually watch and "rate" a player before putting in my other bets, I usually just play the pass and single odds ($5) table and if he "qualifies" then I will make place bets and odds bets. Overall I think it depends on how I feel about a table, if it looks like the table has some good shooters I will remain and play more but if it looks like a cold table I will be out of there very quickly, possibly after only spending $20.

    Versus 5-5-5.
Bets spread evenly with the Pair Plus is how most folks play.
The PP bet is, by far, the worst of your plays.
By betting 2x your PP bet on the ante, you lose $5 on a winning A-K-9 (for example) instead of losing $10.
Net result from winning a pair, playing $10-$10-$5 is a $25 win.
Net result from winning without a pair, playing $10-$10-$5 is a $20 win.

Now, look at playing the same hands only with $10-$10-$10.
    $30 win and a $20 win.
Approx number of times you will win on your PP bet: 1 in 7.
Your odds of beating the dealer's hand are about the same as him beating you (house edge is that he only pays the ante if he fails to qualify).
You will have at least twice as many winning hands with no pair as you have with a pair.

So, over the course of 30 winning hands - 20 with no pair and 10 with a pair. (For math purposes, we will assume all PP bets only win with a pair...even though we know that's not the reality.)
Playing 10-10-10, you will net $500. Playing 10-10-5, you will net $650.

When you lose a played hand, you lose $30 on 10-10-10. You only lose $25 on 10-10-5.

Unless you find a PairPlus that pays 4 units for a Flush...
