Got the pic from my screened deck, so it's blurry. As far as dinner, I'm pretty sure these guys are why I don't have to clean up much after my dog. So dinners out.

I have counted 46 at one time passing thru, my twelve year old golden is so use to them, she doesn't even chase them any more.

Infraction sounds about right, but I should be ok as long as I don't go with Ken or Lola. LOL I think that would be crossing a line.

I guess he felt pretty brave coming out AFTER Thanksgiving. Maybe Lucky would be a good name; that is, if he doesn't end up on some plate.

 

In NC, wild turkey hunting season is in the Spring (April-May) so none of the turkeys in our area are worried in November ;-)

Deer, on the other hand, should be afraid....We had venison on Thanksgiving

 

The only wild turkey on our table would be in a tumbler with a few ice cubes.

 

clearly, now would be a great time for someone to explain the difference between "wild" and heritage.

please do not let it devolve into a discussion about line caught, free range, cruelty free, or any of those other divisive topics.

talk among yourselves.

 

"Wild" = what runs thru your back yard
"Heritage" = is a breed that has it's roots in a time, before Turkeys were mass produced.

Does anyone need an explanation of the difference between wild turkey and Wild Turkey?

 

A wild turkey is a feral native bird. Picture a wild pig versus Wilbur.

Heritage is any number of historic strains that were domesticated early on but still retain many natural/native qualities, as in they can fly and breed on their own, and thus have the musculature of a free bird and thus a higher percentage of red meat. Think Duroc pork or heirloom tomatoes. (But you know that given what you do!)

The commercial broad-breast white turkey was selectively bred to diminish the red meat and accentuate the breast, with a lighter bone structure. They are mobile but cannot fly and need an assist getting their nasty on, reportedly. Think veal, maybe?

If I had to guess I would say that was a young female. Give her another year she'll be more voluptuous.

 

In the twenty one years here, I have only seen three males, maybe 10k females? lol One of the neighbors gets a couple a year with a bow, I had some once, I didn't think it was very good. But maybe it was how he cooked it.
