Will Wynn's new Showstoppers show at Encore be revolutionary?

Wynn has a new show called Showstoppers opening Dec 16 for $90 per ticket, and it's a compilation of Broadway's biggest hits all wrapped in one for Vegas' eyes only, written by Wynn the man himself.

He has openly voiced the oversaturation of Cirque du Soleil in the Vegas market, having been the one to first spark the whole trend.

As you all may know, I am a huge fan of Wynn's work and I have never been a big fan of acrobatics and so Cirque has always been a big yawn for me. On the other hand, I love Broadway musicals and plays so much that I go off-strip to watch local plays.

While I am really hoping to enjoy this and I know Wynn is a genius, I can't help but think that it will not be all that good and probably won't start another trend, as his works and efforts have done in the past. Nevertheless, I am crossing my fingers that it will.

Do you think Wynn could be successful at starting a trend of creating large, premium production plays and musicals from scratch?

I'm completely with you! Cirque doesn't do it for me. Haven't seen any of them, not planning to see any of them either. I'm also a big Wynn fan and I believe this one will be another success. I think there's a huge market for this. People love musicals and plays so why not? With over 40 million visitors a year I don't see why this wouldn't be a success. It's also pretty much one of a kind in Vegas. So, not worried about it one bit :)

I share your respect and admiration for Wynn. Unfortunately, I also share your doubts that this show will be a success.

Not sure if it will be successful. But Mr. Wynn is like all successful businessmen. "Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Here's hoping! Cirque can be fun, but there is nothing like a Broadway-ish show to let you know you are out on the town.

No i dont think vegas is the type of place for experimental productions.

They are much better suited for new york where people can go to the theater all the time and try out new stuff.

The good old fashioned variety show however should be a vegas staple and if promoted and performed properly can be very fun and popular.

I wish it well, but as others have said, I don't think Vegas is the right venue. Broadway type shows have been tried before, and they've all failed to various degrees - even ones with great pedigrees and about as much mass appeal as you can get for musicals.

Lion King did pretty well and Mama Mia was o.k. from what I've been reading from members of this board. But it seemed they didn't last long before being replaced by another venue.

Doesn't sound revolutionary. More like Back to the Future. No matter where they sourced the songs, it's still a Vegas revue. The concept is smart because there are lots of people with no interest in CDS. The problem is the ticket price. 90 frickin' bucks and no household name? Who's he kidding? I'll stick with Hitzville and Legends in Concert until they get more realistic.

I spoke to marketing at Wynn and apparently it is only show tunes. There is no storyline. I completely agree that $90 tickets for show tunes by no-names is uh....not for me. Now for a show with a storyline...a real storyline....I would at least give it a shot. Sigh.

Put Clint Holmes in there with a female costar on his artistic level and I would pay. But that's me, can't say it will be a hit. But Steve is smart, he has clubs for the kids and is trying to keep his more adult patrons happy.

Vegas has clearly needed something new and the cirque shows are boring after you've seen more than one so I will probably give this show a try. Having said that I know I'm different than most on this board as I can't tolerate the cirque or absinthe shows at all. Clearly this is going for a different audience. I really don't see it doing well and may not last a year.

I am more interested in seeing a show like Shakin' be successful. And I agree that someone should bring Clint Holmes back to the strip. He wants to do a Broadway type of show, especially one that could end up there one day.

I just came back from the Wynn. I looked very closely at the signs and the advertising for Showstoppers. I couldn't figure out what Showstoppers was and who they were catering to.

I guess I'll find out once I return for NYE.

So, if it's just show tunes, without a story, what exactly did Wynn write?

My memory might be hazy, but didn't Wynn try a broadway show called, Avenue Q, a few years ago? I heard it was a gteat show, but I do not recall it staying for very long.

Avenue Q was an edgy show. It would have never been a show that could have had the long run Wynn intended. The general problem has been that the hotels want to run Broadway shows like a traditional headliner show for a decade when they are mostly intended to run and close for the next show.

I don't know how much it cost to produce this show, but the development cost has to be much lower than it costs to create a new Cirque show. This reduced cost allows Wynn to return to the more traditional model
of the resort footing the costs of development and collecting all the revenue from sales, as opposed to the modern trend of basicly renting the room out.

While I think the show will be modestly successful financially, it will also have the side benefit of attracting the sort of crowd that is much more likely to gamble in the casinos after the show ends.
