need help south lake taho

we are going in july and was wondering about harrahs in south lake tahoe any info would be appreciated..thanks

plus things to do outside of gambling.....

we have comps via caesars.....etc

 

My wife and I go to Tahoe 2 or 3 times a year and stay at Harrah's or Harvey's as they are both CET properties. I prefer the rooms at Harvey's over Harrah's basically because you have a nicer view of the lake, but the rooms themselves are pretty much identical. There are currently 3 major casinos all within walking distance to each other. Harrah's, Harvey's and Mont Blue. A Hard Rock is suppose to be opening in a few months but when I was there a couple weeks ago, it looked like it had a long way to go.

As far as what to do in the summer, there's the lake. If you're into boating and sailing, it's perfect. Otherwise shopping is the sport of choice there in the summer. Many shops, antique stores and higher end boutiques are located along the main road.

Harvey's has a summer concert series and the line-up is usually posted in January or February. So if your dates coincide with a major concert, be prepared for a lot of people. We went to 2 concert nights there this summer. Saw Steve Miller/Journey, then Doobie Brothers/Boston on the 2nd date.

There's a couple golf courses. One is pretty far away by the airport. The other is probably a 20 minute walk from Harrah's/Harvey's.

 

Water sports! Sail, waterski, just cruise the lake and, our go-to up there, kayak. Several outfitters do guided jaunts or you can just go out on your own with rented kayaks.

If you're not from these here parts, taking the gondola to the top of Heavenly is cool because you have the high-desert basin/range of Nevada behind you and the lake and Sierra Nevada in front of you.

It's a big mtb area, too, trail, and if you've never done it and wanna give it a try, downhill. Go up to Northstar, rent bikes/gear, get a ticket and jump in on one of the inexpensive downhill biking group lessons and give it a try. I'm sure others can chime in on hiking in the area.

If you play golf, Edgewood Tahoe right behind Harvey's is the bomb. However, July is also when they hold the American Century Celebrity tourney at Edgewood (which adds huge crowds to an already madly popular area):

If you can't get on the course because of the tourney it is a kick to check it out for a day and watch celebs/jocks as golfers both excellent and anything but have a go at this uberscenic course. Dinner at the clubhouse at sunset is a must, too.

Pete and Ken have covered things well... the only thing I'd add is if you have a vehicle, possibly scootin' 20 minutes down the hill to Carson City (Nevada's Capital) and pokin' around and maybe even another 20 minutes or so east of there is Virginia City. Nevada's Capitol Bldg. is very accessible and a fun visit, as is the state museum in the old Mint Bldg. On Carson's eastern edge, you can take the old V&T train along most of the original route up to Virginia City and roll back in time to the 1850's at the Silver Queen or Bucket of Blood.

Did anyone mention the Beacon Bar and Grill at Camp Richardson? Great spot on the beach to enjoy some food,libations and the scenery. Also they have music certain times during the summer months. My wife and I always make a trip when we are in the area. You can take a water taxi from South Shore to Camp Richardson which is kind of cool or it's a short drive from the casinos.At Camp Richardson you can rent any kind of water craft you can imagine and there is also a bike rental area with some nice easy trails.If your up for something more strenuous the Rubicon Trail which runs along the lake is breath taking, it's a 4 mile hike one way or 8 round trip. Start at either DL Bliss state or Vikingsholm, my wife dropped me at Vikingsholm and I met her at the beach at DL Bliss,took me less then 2 hrs,not much elevation gain and totally worth it. Also I agree that Virginia City is worth a day trip. You will enjoy Tahoe for sure
