Just got back from a long weekend at the Orleans. It's our favorite place to stay, with a laid back environment and reasonable prices for everything. But the air quality seems to have gotten terrible, much worse than on previous visits. I don't mind smoking but it seems like the place is barely ventilated at all. This also seemed to be an issue at the other casinos we visited (MGM Grand, and several downtown casinos).

Has anyone noticed if it is worse than in the past? Anyone know why? I was thinking it may be because of the new Nevada law that only allows smoking now in casinos, so maybe that is where smokers go now. Has anyone heard of efforts to improve indoor air quality? Apparently indoor air quality is the one of the most underestimated health risks, whereas we tend to overestimate most other risks (e.g. dying in a plane crash, child abduction, etc.)

It's always been poor to me. But my last trip, it seemed to me it was actually getting better.

When Michael Gaughan owned the place it was way worse. Boyd came in and pretty much doubled the air handling throughout the casino and for a few years it was better. However I agree that the air in there is getting worse. HVAC system require maintenance and my suspicion is that they have backed off on things to save money. The heavy duty smokers always have Boulder Station and Eastside Cannery, the two worst IMHO for air quality but I'm sure there are others (I don't play in the real scuzzy local places nor downtown).

I have a four day meeting there next week (Tuesday-Friday) but because of the poor air quality and some other issues I won't stay there nor play there.

Do as I do, take your money elsewhere. Smokers have the right to smoke. Non-smokers have the right to avoid places where the air quality is poor. Contact the Orleans and let them know your concerns. I will pass them on to their Management as well. I have two contacts in the Maintenance Department and will see if I can gather any inside info.

We were just there a couple of weeks ago and I honestly think it's still one of the more ventilated casinos. That being said, my chest still hurt for 3 days after we came back (as usual). I'm really sensitive to the smoke and always have been. :( If only there was a smoke free casino!

It's one of the reasons I won't stay in a casino more than an hour or two. I like to get outside in the fresh air and walk to my next destination. If I wish to have a few drinks, I would rather pay for them at a nice lounge or bar that isn't overwhelmed with smoke or odor. I can tolerate it, but will avoid it if possible.

I've stayed at the Orleans dozens of times over the years, and as recently as last month, and never noticed anything objectionable about the air quality. But now that it's been mentioned, I won't be able to help but trying to notice next month. And for whatever it's worth, I have no allergy/asthma issues, am a non-smoker and always have been.

I usually play the machines in the non-smoking area of the Orleans near the west doors. It's not as bad for air quality. Downtown I play near the doors at the Golden Gate and find the smoke isn't as bad there. I find the Freemont and El Cortez brutal for smoke and bad ventilation so I spend less time gambling there because of that.

I haven't really noticed the air quality at the Orleans but I distinctly remember Sunset Station. It was really bad the last time I was there.

I have been going to The Orleans since 2001 when they had only 1 tower room building. Back then as soon as I walked in the door I would get a blast of a mold smell. A few years later the carpeting in the casino was replaced and it was great. No offensive smells when entering. The downfall for me was a few years ago they started piping in a vanilla type air freshener. It is so strong that it lingers on my clothing even after I have left the casino. I don't mind the smell, but sometimes it is too strong.

We just got back last night from 2 nights at Orleans and we didn't notice anything different about the air quality. I guess I wasn't focused on it either.

We have stayed and played there a lot. Air quality seems to vary at Orleans more than it does at other casinos. I like to play in the early morning when the air is the cleanest.

    following up

I did just that this past weekend and will let you know if I hear anything. I would also be interested to know what the maintenance folks say, if you are able to post it.

    Thanks.
