Ellis Island

I keep reading that it is just behind Bally's. I've been to Vegas quite a few times but most recent was 2 years ago, just can't place it at all. How close is it to Bally's? I'm staying at Bally's in December. TIA

 

I ventured over there once just to check it out. I don't think its walkable from Bally's, and I didn't think the neighborhood was all that great. It's behind the strip on Koval. It's next to the Super 8 Motel. I wasn't too impressed with the crowd or the games so I didn't stay long.

 

It is just about five minutes walk from Bally's. Right behind it. Occasionally there are a few bums on the right hand sidewalk and not sure I would walk that way in the dark on my own. Daytime is fine and if you look first and see if there is anyone around you can cross over and walk by the hotel the other side if there are. Then cross over at Koval. I've never had a problem walking there and back. Seen a few bums but they've never said anything or made me feel uneasy. If you are concerned just wait a few minutes until someone else is walking as well. Ellis Island is great for cheap, great food in their cafe. Gambling is good too for being close to The Strip.

 

It's actually a very short walk from Ballys if you exit Ballys from the sports book area by the fast food restaurants.

 

It's an easy, short walk but I'll leave it up to you if you want to walk there. I agree that when walking there it's like walking in the Stratosphere area. Not the most beautiful and safe part of Vegas for during the day you'll probably be fine. Their cafe has some great food options for low prices. A lot of locals go there for a cheap meal. We've had breakfast there a couple of times and liked it each and every time. Service was great, staff was friendly, the food was delicious and the bill was low. What else would you want right? Took a tour of their beer brewery which was nice. Wouldn't stay in the hotel and the casino doesn't really appeal to me but for a nice meal with a beer you can pick me up any day of the week to go there.

 

Easy, short walk.

 

I made the short walk from Bally's to EI on Tuesday a week ago for the umpteenth time with never a problem. I go for their beer and particularly the great food deals like the off-menu steak special and BBQ. EI is definitely not for everyone, but the walk shouldn't be a factor.

 

It's certainly walkable. It would probably take longer to walk to the southern part of PH from Bally's. It's weird walking from there after dark because you start to expect everything to be lit up like the strip after a time but it's safe, especially if you manage to leave with other folks heading back. If you would feel more comfy cabbing it, you probably need to be prepared to call for one because they don't have much of a cab stand.

 

See if this link works for you. Google maps and street views is a great thing. You can do a virtual walk from the strip to Elllis Island which according to Google, is a classic place for gambling, food, and Karaoke.

It is very walkable, assuming you can walk from Bally's to the Harley Cafe on the strip. Both are a block. EI might be a hair further.

 

It's an 8-minute walk from the sports book door of Bally's to EI, if you walk at regular speed. The walk is unattractive, but I actually feel less harassed on that block than I do walking down the strip.

Sadly, it seems that some of their full-pay VP has been removed. They still have some, near the front door, but I liked that section between the slot club and the table games.

Exactly. I don't understand how anyone could find that walk scary. It is quick and easy. You'll encounter more bugs than anything on your way.

When my husband is in Vegas for work, we stay at the Westin. I have walked between there and the Strip at all hours of the day night. Ellis Island is just across the intersection basically. I think there are less bums on that part of Flamingo since the Linq opened.

 

As other posters have said it is an easy walk from Bally's sportsbook. I have done it many times for quite a few years. It was worst in the past when they were building the Platinum.

 

What is the "off menu" steak special?

 

It is a sirloin thick cut, with salad, choice of potatoe, garlic green beans and micro-brew, or root beer.

EI is one of the more popular threads on this board. Try a search along with Google and you'll have more info than you'd ever care to see! Oh, the steak special also comes with bread, though you may have to request it.

 

I definitely suggest making the walk to Ellis Island. A must every trip for me. Very good food, their own beer, and the karaoke later at night is fun also.

 

I would confirm (if concerned) the walk across the street and walk up to Koval to the light on the corner (Westin hotel to your back). Walk across at the light and down 100 yds. to the Ellis Island. Return the same way. And yes, if someone from the hotel is walking that way you can walk behind them (if not with them) for a feeling of safety.

Been there many times and it seems I recall traffic is so heavy up and down the street it would dampen any obvious attempt at harassment by those on the street if you just ignore and keep walking. Never had a problem other than just saying no, sorry. Good luck!

 

Just a tip: to get the Steak Special you first need to get a players card and then swipe it at a Kiosk to get the coupon. Only one coupon per table needed up to four I think. I'm not that crazy about the special as the meat is not aged and not seasoned. My wife on the other hand loves it and we go at least once per trip.

The cafe dining room has been remodeled in the past few months. They were working on it in March and it's completed now.

Yep--much more modern looking, less old-school Vegas, and I think the wacky naval-combat paintings are gone.
