    Trips to Las Vegas:
    6
We're looking at the 3nd week of April all the way to the 2nd week of May as the window of opportunity for our next trip to Vegas. It has to be a low roller trip. So, I'll be leaning heavily on MyVegas, coupons and my Vegas Ninja skills. I'm excited about it.

Here's the thing though. I've gone from staunchly anti-rental car to having a rental car for the length of every trip with the justification of "just in case" and it's almost the same price as to/from the airport-getting supplies-exploring Vegas-oddball shopping (we found a few Vegas only, not online stores we like). We always say we're going to use the car the day no more than 3 days of our trip; arrival-departure-hotel change days. But, that's not what ends up happening.

    I have a love/hate relationship with the rental car;

Hates-I'm always the one driving. Always. I know my way around better (which only gets worse with each trip of me driving exclusively). Timing has sucked and I usually can't drink or can't drink as much because of medications. We're hosting somebody and either they don't have a car or they don't know their way around or they're scared to drive.

Loves-Exploring. Oddball shopping. Feeling like a local (I'm going to be a snowbird around there in 15 to 20 years) Enjoying the sunshine, dryness and fresh air with the windows open (my allergies are too bad and it's too humid to do that much here in the summer).

Valet-I freaking love the valet. I wish there was valet everywhere. The guys at Bally's remember me and I don't think I've been there enough for them to remember me but they do. They don't remember my name but they remember me. I had a banana cream yellow car the one time so they call me Mrs. Banana Cream from Canada and blame me when the weather isn't perfect. Last time they asked me where Mr. Banana Cream was, I said he's around. And they were kind of let down that I didn't have the yellow car. Bally's has the best music out in the valet too. I emailed them after my last big surgery and they gave me all the music they play in the valet. Just emailed me the files. I was in tears. I love seeing a lineup in the pickup and casually sliding over to them with a bigger tip and my car suddenly appears out of nowhere. It's not even a big tip! I love hitting the valet button on the phone before I leave and asking them to bring the car around. I love having them unload the trunk and send my stuff to the bell desk so my husband can grab a beer the second he gets inside, we don't have to bring our stuff to the room right away, we don't even have to go to the room right away. I love getting in the car and forgetting that I have to start it myself. I like that I forgot I have to start the car. I feel like a queen at the valet, I really do. Where else am I going to get treated like that?

Wow, I can really go on about the valet.

Anyhow, so this here prospective trip, my husband put his foot down. No rental car. Pas de voiture d'occasion. NingĂșn coche de alquiler. (google translate, sorry if it's wrong). He's said it before and changed his mind. But, this time he's serious.

Logistically, it's no biggie. I know how to get around without a rental car. Budget wise, it probably cuts our transportation budget in half. My aggravation level will come down quite a bit. It'll be open season on booze as long as my body plays along. And we'll probably have some new experiences out of it. On the downside, I'll miss the guys at the valet (apparently I'll miss them a lot). And the driving around with the windows open exploring Vegas won't be happening. We'll find different oddball shopping, so I'm not worried about that. Our gambling might increase if we're hanging out in one spot more.

I can't believe I'm saying it. But, I'm finding myself torn about not having the rental car. What's wrong with me? Where are my Vegas priorities? Where else in Vegas can I feel like a queen for a dollar (and don't go in the gutter, you perverts). I should be embracing this experience. I should be happy my husband cares enough about my happiness that he's doing what he feels is best for me (and doesn't want to deal with a cranky wife on vacation).

I don't really have a question. What are your thoughts?

If I'm in the wrong section...please move me...'k...thanx...bye...

Not to discourage you on your 15-20 year plan. But, you won't be opening windows unless you want to dust the entire house everyday. The dust is everywhere and with the constant Vegas winds, it ends up everywhere in the house. Our house was only 2 years old, energy efficient and still the dust got in with everything closed.

I never had allergies before we moved to Vegas. I got them there and since we moved back, they make me miserable at some times of the year. I used to scoff at people when they complained about their allergies. Now I understand.

Thanks Joe. But, I'm talking about driving around with the windows open.

Hey Lola - how long are you going to be there ? If it's more than 5 days I think a rental car is a must, and, if you are a "super ninja" you can get the car at such a low rate (since you have a ton of time to plan and find promo's/discount codes) that I think you can convince him a car is not only a necessity, it will also save you/him money (to and from airport, taxi, buying sundries at a discount store, site seeing, traveling to locals casinos for deals on gambling, food & free play) etc.

I'm a dang good Ninja. But, not a good enough Ninja to ever find or be able to take advantage of some of the deals y'all talk about. I don't know if it's because I'm Canadian. Let's say I'm a good Ninja with other stuff. I think I need a rental car Ninja to help me if I'm going to get a car.

Or, maybe I should just embrace it? Besides Ellis Island, Stage Door, and Hooters we're strictly downtown and strip people. With a well stocked Walgreen's coming out our ears now, there's no real need to be going to supermarkets. We don't really need it anymore. At one time the only place to get a banana and yogurt on the strip was at the buffet. (no dirty banana jokes ya perverts)

Tree....you got me. You got me dead to rights.

I'm a sucker for a gentlemen opening the car door, taking my hand to help me out of the car, smiling at me, making idle chitchat with me, taking the car away so I can go on my way, bringing the car back when I want it, helping me back into the car...they're always so friendly and sometimes they're handsome. I can't help myself. Is it so wrong?

No stress, it's OK man. I mentioned I don't drive around with my windows open here in the summer because of the humidity and my allergies. But, I also mentioned I want to be a snowbird in Vegas (Canadians who go south half year to get away from the cold are called snowbirds) and you know how Joe gets when anybody mentions living in Vegas. Everybody knows you don't say certain things around Joe. And I know better. It's my fault. Joe's like one of my uncles that you can't say anything bad about the Canadiens around or you'll never hear the end of it but somebody always manages to get him started and everybody has a good chuckle about it. He's our Vegas board uncle.

If you only need a car a part of the time, Enterprise's "weekend special" is pretty good. $41 for a compact after taxes/fees for 3 days Fri-Mon/300 max miles. The drawback is, you gotta pick it up at an off-strip location, but you can arrange for them to "pick you up". Since I'm always the drunk passenger, I love having the car! lol

I think Joe's voice on Vegas is refreshing. No one of course is required to have his reaction, and obviously many folks live there and put up with it, enjoy it or love it. But he is a good balance to the pie-in-the-sky, it-could-never-be-anything-but-heaven that pervades many thought processes. If Vegas did not have one of the highest abandonment rates the town would probably top 3 million by now. There is a reason it works for so many, and a reason it does not work for so many.

As for having a car on a Vegas trip? I'd never be without one. But that's just me. Everyone is unique.

When Lola talked about moving to Vegas and windows open, I assumed she was talking about windows in her future house, not car windows. Nothing more than that. Not really that hard to follow.

I'm with you, Lola. I love valet! My favorite valet staffs are at MaBay, Luxor (too bad I don't like the hotel) and Caesars.

And I love driving in Vegas. Once I started renting back in 2008, I never looked back.

I agree. Valet rocks. Free. Still one of the best comps in Vegas for we hoi polloi.

I don't really understand it but if you get that much utility (ie happiness) from the valet you should definitely rent a car so you can experience one of the things you love about Vegas.

So we're at a wine shop in Vancouver last month. Talking to some folks, and I remarked to one of the locals how "nice" Canadians are. He corrected me: "Friendly."

    OK.

    lol

That's kind of funny to me -- main reason for getting a car is to use the valet. Perhaps she could get her money's worth on the rental car by checking the car in and out of the valet multiple times. LOL

Banana, yogurt, handsome valet driver... Excuse me, ma'am, I think you forgot your banana and yogurt. Would you like me to carry it up to your room for you?

How's that for a friendly valet? :faint:
