My Plaza Stay

I will be checking out of the Plaza this morning so I thought I would post about my likes and dislikes from my four night stay.

Likes

Loved having the food court available . Sometimes you just want something quick and having this right on the premises was very handy. I ended up using the Mexican place, the coffee place, Mc Donald's, Subway, and Pop up pizza.

Hash House a go go is another good addition to the food choices.

Loved the wifi.

Apparently there is a shuttle three times a day to the airport. Only ten dollars for hotel guests!

Loved the fact that the casino was cool and well ventilated. That is very important. Nothing will make me leave faster than a hot stuffy smokey casino.

Enjoyed the selection of slots and loved the 99% payback video poker machines by the bar.

Hotel guests get free Louie Anderson tickets but I didn't have time to use them.
You also get a fun book of hotel discounts on food etc at check in.

The air conditioning in my room (1483) worked fabulously. Another very important thing. TV was modern and worked well also.

The room was spacious and I liked the furnishings. The bed was comfy. I adore the bedside lamps and the old Plaza picture on the wall.

Loved the modern safe that was large enough to hold my iPad and not on the floor. ( I am looking at you Four Queens). This was eye level and easy to use.

All of the staff I encountered were pleasant and helpful. I especially enjoyed a certain cocktail waitress. She is of a certain age, but fast and efficient and funny. She was working down by the VP on Tuesday night.

Loved having the cab stand right outside the door.

There were lots of elevators for the south tower. They were fast and worked well.

At no time did I feel unsafe in the hotel. I was not pan handled once within the hotel either.

Dislikes

The scent in the casino. Still too strong. Cut it way way way back.

Lose the time share people who attack you as soon as you come in the door. They are universally hated.

The bathtub toilet area. Omg, who designed this? I was staying alone so I left the door open all the time, but if you had a roommate , you almost have to step into the bathtub to close the door! I wish during the remodel that they had taken two feet off of the big room and added them to the bathroom.
Also the tub is terribly slippery when wet. There are signs on the mirror asking me to use the bath mats for safety, but there are no rubber mats given. Only the towel mats that you use to step out of the shower. There definitely should be some non slip material put in that tub.
Also there is nothing to hold onto. No towel bars or soap shelves either. No hook on the bathroom door.

You cannot control the bedside table lamps from the bed. You have to get up and walk across the room to turn them off and on. Strange.

My room had a few dings on the wall where the paint had been knocked off. It would be a simple thing to correct with a few dabs of paint. As it was , the paint issues were the first thing I saw when I walked in the door. Not a major issue, but it speaks to the upkeep of the hotel.

Obviously there were way more likes than dislikes. I would definitely stay again, only next time I will ask for a handicapped room to see if I find the bathroom more user friendly...lol.

I hope no one that doesn't need an accessible room reserves one as I have two handicapped daughters in wheelchairs and it is really hard to find accessible rooms at times. The hotel actually is legally bound to move someone if they really don't need the room and someone who is handicapped needs it. So far this has never happened to us but one of our rooms was given out several years ago and we had to move the next day. It is really a problem because many hotel employees on the front desk don't know the rules. Accessible rooms are supposed to be the last given out in the whole hotel unless someone who is handicapped reserves them. Many times this is not the case.

GREAT Report...I too like all the food choices in the lobby. HHAG is always a good choice as the wife and I almost always share one of their hugh meals. Sometimes I like Mikey Ds sausage biscuit for breakfast while I wait for everyone else to wake up. WiFi and breakfast how can you go wrong?

 

Will confirm the smell. We had hhagg a week ago and all of us noticed the smell when we walked into the hotel.

 

Yes, my room was comped and they gave me a fun book. ( they never do that at the Four Queens)

If I were to ask for a handicapped room it wouldn't be under false pretences because I have a severe foot issue.
I can still walk....painfully.
But I would have been grateful to have something to hold onto in the bathtub area.

That is an interesting question about the handicapped rooms though...do they have some kind of guideline on who gets them?

 

There is no such law about handicap rooms as far as I am aware. Guidelines on who gets them, is who ever books them first. A hotel is by no means legally bound to move a guest, or to even try and figure out if they are truly handicap or to what extent. On the contrary, if someone books an ADA room, then it must be removed from the reservation system, and held for that guest.

Your reviews are great and so details. I always read them and love them. I walked through the Plaza 2 years ago and liked the look of the place. I'm not really a downtown guy but I'm really considering to give the Plaza a try for two nights. I really liked Louie Anderson's show when he was still at the Excalibur so it will be a great chance to go see his show again. I do wonder about one thing. What can you tell me about the pool? What's the vibe? Enough day beds? Good bar?

I have extremely limited mobility and use a mobility scooter, also I need a roll in shower. I've never had difficulty getting a handicapped room.

 

agree with most evrything you say would add a couple
Like- the daily slot tournament, we have placed on this quite a bit for free play, when all stays added in probably to the tune of $1500, not bad.
Like- the fact that Curtis actually reads, responds, and tries to do something about what he sees posted
Like- the coffee area with comfortable seating in the lobby, great place to enjoy a cup
Like- the staff is always so friendly there more so than other places IMHO
Like- rooms in the south tower are removed from the noise of the FSE

dislike- the table minimum never seems to get lower than $10, table area seems mostly deserted
dislike- still only one ticket pay machine, although never had to wait long at the cashier
All in all still one of our favorite places to stay

The regulations are found in the New Rules for Lodging Regulations under the 2010 ADA Title III Regulations to take effect March 15, 2012. I have no problem with someone who needs an accessible room renting one but I think it is very selfish if someone rents one only to get a more spacious room as there are people out there who really need these rooms. Most hotels still do not know many things included in the rules such as not giving an accessible room out to someone else after an accessible room has been booked. This year the hotels where we are staying have told me that they have put a block on our rooms. This remains to be seen if it actually happens. Usually they are able to scramble around and find something for us but it is very difficult to use a bathroom when your wheelchair will not fit through the door and you are unable to walk. Thankfully my husband and I are still strong enough that we can physically get my daughter into the bathroom if we work together.

Thanks for the informative trip report. I plan to stay there again early 2015. IMO, the discussion related to handicapped rooms and its usage is certainly "on topic" because we are obviously discussing the Hotel rooms.

Although I never made it to see a friends room on Halloween I was in the casino. I mostly find it quite warm in there. The cocktail service however was fantastic while I was there which also contributed to me being warm. Love the food court and Hash House is wonderful. Thanks for the review. Do you have pics to share?

I did not venture into the pool area but I could see it from my window.
The pool area appears to be very basic.
At the end of October it was not busy.
There were plenty of chairs.
That is about all I can tell you.

Oh yes ded...the one ticket payout machine was frustrating.
