I recently got an ipad, and love the simpleness of carrying it when wanting to use the internet.. My question is i thought i remembered things of that nature being a no go in the sports book.. But so many people have smart devices these days i was wondering what the ruling is on things like that in the sportbook..

I think that rule went out the window years ago..assuming you are not holding it up to take a pix of the board..I've seen one guy with a laptop at a Gold Coast racing area seat and from what I noticed it was handicapping involved. It's been years since I've seen a no cell phone sign posted.

The basic /law is that you can't sit in the sportsbook and place bets for your associates. In order to ensure this didn't happen, the casinos made a rule that you take the calls at least one step outside the confines of the sportsbook. The whole rule was ridiculous. Now, the law is still the same. You can't place bets for other folks but you're allowed to talk on the phone and have electronics in the sportsbook. Just don't have conversations that the sportsbook folks might misconstrue as booking bets for your associates.

It hasn't been that many years, has it? I'd guess 4 years since they allowed cell phones.

One reason the no phone thing was to protect the independent sports books from what is called middling. They (bettors) would sit and call in the odds from each sports book and when there was a spread they could bet in the middle. Now, most books are hooked together through ownership of many books and outside run books by large outfits. It's almost impossible to middle now.
Also, years ago race books would book your bets and could lose a lot of money when so called steam horses were bet. Now all racebooks are hooked up with the pari-mutuel pools and there's no chance of them losing any money.
