    My Trip Report

Yep, you read that right. 9 hours. No, not a layover, but an intentional trip that is 9 hours in length. Hell, it'll wind up being less than that. Closer to 8 when it's all said and done. So the reason for the visit (we can't really call this a trip, can we?) is to wager on matchups for the upcoming Breeders' Cup. For those that don't know, the Breeders' Cup is widely regarded as the best two days of North American horse racing of the year. For the racing community it dwarfs the Triple Crown. Matchups are simply propositions offered by the sportsbooks where one horse is matched up against another with corresponding odds, and whoever finishes best wins. Pretty simple, right? These used to be somewhat widely available in the wild west days of offshore sportsbooks, but once UIGEA hit and Netteller went kaput, betting any real money offshore and ability to move it back and forth was effectively over. The Wynn offers the widest variety of matchups in LV, with other properties offering smaller (and hopefully unique) propositions. This is the first time I've done this trip myself. I've always relied on others to do it for me. But having just moved outside of LA, it was a perfect opportunity to fly out of an airport that's right next door in Burbank and try Southwest. Rather than popping my cherry with a ride to LV, a flight is in order as time is money, even moreso when the Breeders' Cup begins on Friday and I'm in the $10k buyin Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge. So this has to be an in-and-out (not that kind...and not THAT kind either!) kind of trip. The plan is to taxi and monorail it from the airport to Palace Station -> SLS -> LVH -> Wynn -> Venetian -> Mirage and then possibly Caesars. I'll have to see how the time is going. That will allow me to see all the lines from all of the companies and then gameplan my plays. Luckily I've been playing these long enough that I can roll through the sheets pretty quickly and know what I'm going to do where. I'm hoping that I'll have a few hours on the backend to play some baccarat and/or Ultimate Texas Holdem at Aria before heading back to McCarran and Burbank to get ready for Breeders' Cup. So with all of that, here's the ammo:

Hopefully it will magically multiply over the weekend and will be waiting for me when I go back in December!

Good Luck in the challenge. The are a lot of open races this year and the action should be pretty exciting.

I understand the allure of Vegas, I'll be there on Saturday, but if the trip is strictly for the Breeders Cup, why not Santa Anita itself?

Most of my bets will be online, but I land just in time and will be at the book hopefully for the Turf Sprint.

Well kids were at halftime. Vegas has no balls anymore. No matchups at mgm or attain and cantor looks unlikely to offer. Westgate might go up this afternoon. Wynn had only Friday up and will hill only Saturday with nickle caps for the most part. Grabbing a little BLT before hitting the road back over to Westgate then wynn and hopefully to aria for a couple of hours.

I live in la, so going to lv to bet matchups is very feasable. Bet matchups today then santa anita for the bc and the being challenge. The only reason fir this trip and that cash was for matchups and maybe a little table play.

Are these sorts of bets not available at OTB's? Excuse my horse racing ignorance.

All normal bets should be taken by your OTB, xpressbet.com, etc...

He is playing in site specific Handicapping Tournament which is not at your local OTB.

    Tri: trifecta- 3 horse bet
    su: superfecta- 4 horse bet

There are a lot of different types of bets and combinations of said bets. Think of all the bets at a craps table, however, the teller at the track usually will not help you with explanations, etc...

These props bets is were a bettor can make a smaller bet to make a ton of $$$.

If anyone is interested, just look up betting horses for dummies. It makes the exotic bets seem easier to play.

These wagers are not normal pari-mutuel wagers like tri's, super's or the like. I can play those anywhere. These are matchups of one horse against another that are only offered offshore, with locals that use PPH services, or in Vegas.

Well it was a semi productive trip. Wynn wasn't putting Saturday's races until tomorrow (Avello cited CFB and money lines taking up too much of his time, whatever the fuck that means), Westgate was copying Wynn, MGM and Cantor were not offering them. What used to be a huge day at all of the books with various props and matchups has been reduced to just another OTB experience. No reason to bother with Vegas for BC anymore. Granted, I did get down about $15k in wagers, but it should have been closer to the whole $30k.

Since matchups were so lame, I made my way over to Aria to play either UTH or some midi baccarat. The HL room was like a morgue at around 1 this afternoon, so over to UTH it was. Bought in for $5k and was down to about $2k after 2.5 hours of play ($25 trips and $100 ante) with no notable hands. Just grinding and getting sucked out on or always getting out-kicked. Then a few 4x wins combined with a flush and full house and I somehow managed to book a win, albeit for $400. Given where things were, I can't complain. On my last hand, a guy at the table was dealth 9sJs. Being a newb he checks. Board comes 10sQsKs. Everyone had already bet on the first round, so they couldn't touch their cards but the guy at first base says he thinks he has the As. Sure enough he did, but the player got a combined 50/1 on his $25. He had been playing $5 for the dealers a lot on trips, so they took down a nice $200 as well at 40/1. Great way to close the session. I almost missed my flight because I misread my ticket and thought my flight time was boarding time and the cage at Aria had to validate $5,400 in chips which took about 5 minutes. The girl at the desk was asked by the pit which number table of UTH I was playing. Like I had any clue whatsoever. The supervisor that was at the station next to where I was got pissed since this apparently happens a lot. I understand the need to validate chips, but the pit could have handled the whole thing a lot tighter and quicker.

All in all a fun trip, even though it was only 8 or so hours. Got some matchups in, got some table time. I'll have to check out Mlife to try and confirm the trips+3xAnte rating theory. I had to split from the table, but I flat bet the whole time, so unless they messed up, it should be easy to back into. Now all that's left is waiting to see what becomes of all of those matchups...

Some kind of error with the numbers. I only earned 15,356 TC, which is about 500 in theo. Assuming a $325 rating ($25+$100x3) at 40 hands an hour for three hours at an edge of saying 2.5%, I should have received a lot more based on the 30/1 accepted ration. That's almost $1000 in theo. Either that or they are rating the game at 20 hands an hour, which I wouldn't think would be the case.

Good come back! Try calling Aria VIP Services...they can get a host on the line to give you your avg, theo, and time played. Sometimes I feel different Pit Supervisors rate UTH differently...don't know if they get the various carnoval games confused or what. From my last trip, my understanding is mlife rates at 3x Ante + 1/2 Trips. Worst case, the pit boss only rated your initial bets (2x Ante + Trips) which would suck and be in Cosmo, Wynncore, V/P, territory.

Turns out it was an incompetent pit-boss. I buy in at 1:30, leave just after 4:30 and because I was rushing to make my flight I didn't check with pit to see what they had the time at. They had me at 1h25m and that's likely only because the new PB that came in on a shift change put me in, this after the first mope even went and got me a card. Fucking incompetence. To confirm, they do rate at 3x Ante + Trips as they had me at $325/hand.

On a side note, matchups were a win to the tune of almost $2k, so a decent return. BCBC went well until Better Lucky couldn't get up in the Filly and Mare Sprint, thus changing my end-game plan. Wound up finishing around 100th, losing about $7,500 in the process.
