This will be my 28th visit to Vegas but this will be the first time I'm renting a car. I never wanted to before as the traffic can be so bad and I always got good results with the cabs and buses.

Where should I visit off-strip (and not downtown) now that I will have the freedom of my own wheels? Any casinos stand out especially? Good odds, good restaurants, etc?

    Any suggestions appreciated.

I also recommed Red Rock (both Casino and canyon park). Also try Egg Works on Flamingo Ave (just before 215 ramp) about 10 minutes from strip for a great breakfast. I also recommend stopping at the M-resort for loose slots / good paying VP and an above average buffet.

Fiesta Henderson has great video poker; it's one of my favorite places to play.

Or go the other direction and visit Fiesta Rancho, Texas Station, and Suncoast. I've heard that the steakhouse at Texas Station is very good.

I will agree about Red Rock. I disagree about M. It has been going downhill.

If I ever rented a car I'd do M Resort, Red Rock Casino, Red Rock Canyon, Green Valley Ranch.

Another vote for Red Rock. First go visit the canyon and then enjoy the casino afterwards, it makes for a fine afternoon. As far as traffic goes the only place we encountered any real traffic the one time I rented a car there was on the strip. But overall I thought Vegas was a very easy and low-stress place to drive.

Not sure where you are staying, but having a car is really nice, and if you keep checking/re-checking the price, you can usually get a great deal (about the cost of a taxi ride per day).

I always stay on the strip, but I like to gamble downtown as well, so a 15 minute ride down paradise and I am parked at valet at the el-co and I can do what I want.

Also, I enjoy a lot of the locals casinos: Sams Town (Boulder Highway), Sunset Station, south point, the Palms/Rio, and having a car makes it easy. I always use Valet Parking.

My wife likes to shop so she goes to the outlet mall, towne square mall, walmart for convenience items, etc.

** HINT ** I always bring my garmin nuvi (GPS) with me, it saves me a ton of time and headaches.

I highly recommend South Point if you are looking for good odds on a good selection of relatively low-stakes table games and a very good selection of video poker.

If you go toward South Point, consider stopping at the Silverton to see the large aquarium with mermaids near the main casino entrance.

The M Resort definitely. Nice casino and very good buffet. It's very easy to earn a free buffet with some play.
If you're looking to take a drive, Mt Charleston is nice and Valley of Fire is spectacular.

Another vote for Silverton...Pro Bass Store attached. For more casino hopping, you can also do Laughlin and Primm in one day.

    Hey Now!
I am a chip collector, and am planning on doing the Laughlin/Primm trip. The scenery looks killer, especially in the California section.

We rent a car all the time. Places we've used the car: Suncoast Casino, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Mount Charleston, Clark County Shooting Range, Hoover dam and Tillman bypass bridge, Spring Mountain Ranch, Red Springs, Floyd Lamb Park, Pinball Hall of Fame, Neon Boneyard, Smith Center, The Orleans, The M, Green Valley Ranch, Outlet center, Bootleggers Bistro, Wetlands Park, and the Springs Preserve. I'm sure there are places I've used the car that I've left out or forgotten.

Exploring is a lot of fun in Las Vegas.

If you do go to Red Rock Casino, please visit the new Shops at Summerlin near the 215 Beltway and Charleston Boulevard, just south of the Casino. It's 100-acre, 1.6 million-square-foot shopping zone and it just opened. Then let us know how nice it is.

For time off the clock, I would go to Valley of Fire.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I always rent a car during my Vegas trips. In fact one time the car rental place gave me a MUSTANG for just $40 more! I've been to a lot of the places mentioned.

I love taking an afternoon and going for a drive in the desert for a few hours. It's a chance to see a part of the country that's different from where you live. Also it is kinda nice to get away from the slot machines for a little while...especially when they're being tight.

I would do Red Rock Canyon, Bonnie Springs Ranch, and Red Rock Casino.
What i do is go south on 1-15, then hit Blue Diamond Hwy east until it turns into 159 (just a couple of exits). Then you'll come to Old Nevada Ghost Town, great spot, gunfights, saloons, hangings (lol). Then back to 159 until the entrance to Red Rock Canyon and the 13 mile loop. You can stop along the way, take pics, hike, whatever.
Then exit RRC back on the 159 to Charleston (make sure you take a left). Follow it all the way to Red Rock Casino. Then back to the Strip.
I prefer this way going to the Canyon. It's basically a big loop inside a small loop. Make sure you venture to the Canyon in the morning so you can take your time seeing all the sites and then do lunch/dinner at Red Rock Casino.
Then you'll have all evening to hit the tables.
