    My Trip Report

    Intro:
Hello all! First official TR here, however, I have been included as an extra in a buddy’s trip reports a time or two previously. My initial post is lengthy as I have had a bit of time on the first leg of a 22+ hour transit but rest of posts to follow will ideally be brief updates.

Note: For cliff notes skip to Planned Events section and watch for updates.

    Background:
I really enjoy reading everyone else’s TRs and it is fun getting to know you guys through your entertaining stories. The best part about this board is getting to see perspective on Vegas (as well as life in general sense) through the eyes of others in ways that you might not see normally. Since this is my first TR I just want to provide a little background that hopefully gives my story a bit of a unique perspective. I am currently living and working in the Middle East/GCC in a tiny oil and gas rich country called Qatar. We are now coming up to a nice 9 day holiday thanks to Eid al Adha (the Hajj pilgrimage) and since I try to travel any chance I can, I decided to make good use of it by flying back to the States for a quick Vegas trip and stop by home (Ohio) to see family. I used to make about 2-3 Vegas trips a year but since I moved overseas 5 years ago it has reduced but I have managed to make at least one trip per year.

My last trip to Vegas was during the first week of May (Mayweather fight weekend + Cinco de Mayo) as a semi-honeymoon where my wife and I stayed at Cosmo for 8 nights in a One Bedroom on the 59th floor of the West Tower w/fountain view which was awesome. I wish I would have filed a TR for that one but unfortunately did not. For all future trips I will plan on tracking them better since it is always nice to reflect after keeping good records.

The trip in May quickly got me to gold status at Cosmo so when I was offered a 2 night stay during Sep/Oct I decided to utilize it and add 2 nights from gold level membership. I called a few buddies to see if they were free and while most were unavailable due to other plans, one of my good friends was available so I booked and it will be the two of us. Gold status has a couple of very nice perks as I believe you do not have any blackout dates and can even add a 2nd room for a companion as well. Anyways, the day has arrived so off I go!

Originally planned events (very Cosmo-centric as I don’t plan on traveling too far from the hotel this trip):
My wife does not have off of work and only one friend of mine is able to meet up so I look forward to a ‘relaxing’ trip consisting of watching a lot of sports and gambling. Here’s a list of items I am trying to do during my stay:
    1. Utilize my favorite ‘25 dollar daily Martingale discount’ for breakfast - play any game until winning $25 and utilize the winnings towards lunch. I played red/black on roulette last trip but will go with baccarat or pass/don’t pass in craps this time since the edge is waaaay better compared to roulette.
    2. Eat at The Henry utilizing my $25DMD strat (located in Cosmo)
    3. Eat at Earl of Sandwiches (located in PHO)
    4. Place and sweat multiple College and NFL football sports bets – there are loads of great games on Saturday. I will probably throw a MLB bet in there as well.
    5. Play VP at Queue Bar (Cosmo)
    6. Spend time at Bond Bar
    7. Blackjack at Cosmo (I really enjoy the dealers on main floor) and Bond Bar
    8. Visit Chandelier Bar (surprisingly I have still yet to go)
    9. Find the solid play .25 VP at bartops in Bellagio (thanks to Tringlomane’s list my buddy has informed me there’s a great spot to play he enjoys) – also have Gelato while I’m there
    10. Make sure to NOT play VP at Aria sports bar (the 30min drink rule was in force previously and said I would not go back)
    11. Eat lunch at Mon Ami Gabi (still have not done this yet)
    12. Craps, craps, craps. I really want to use my dark side strat that I do well on but will most likely cave to social pressure for the fun side.
    13. Give Baccarat a go – have not played but have looked it up a bit and will likely spend some time on this trip
    14. Eat at BURGR by Gordon Ramsy (at PHO)
    15. Implement the pedialyte while drinking to cure hangover strat.
    16. Maybe stop by the pool time permitting. :-S If I could find a pool covering the games I’d do that all day Saturday.
    17. Possibly find my way to $5 Craps at Margaritaville to keep the traditional win streak going there. Last trip we witnessed a solid 45 min roll.
    18. Possibly stop by RRL for a drink to see how the new setup is working out
    19. Sneak in a poker tourney Thursday night (most likely at Aria or PHO) before my buddy arrives.
    20. Attend LuckyRice Saturday night at Cosmo
    21. Visit the bar at Mandarin Oriental (can’t recall the name..) overlooking the strip
    22. Possibly meet up with any VMBers for a roll of the dice on a craps table somewhere!
    23. Eat at Secret Pizza
    24. Eat at STK

    Travel:
My wife works for the local airline so I get ID90/staff tickets which means I pay approximately 10% of value of ticket and any taxes associated. The downside is you’re not guaranteed a seat so you need to either a.) travel during slow time or b.) get lucky when load capacity is close to full. Flight loads aren’t too bad but seeing as I’m in for a gambling trip already it is a no brainer regardless.
Our local work week here is Sunday through Thursday and with a good majority of expats having off for the holiday, most will be traveling starting Thursday so I decided take off a day early to leave late Wednesday night. I checked the flight loads and the earliest flight that looked the best was a 1am Wed night/Thu am DOH direct to Philly (13.5 hours flight time) and the total cost of staff ticket for the one way is approximately $128.75 – VALUE WIN. Last week the flight had a maximum capacity of approximately 217 seats in economy with 205 booked at the time which looked like it might be full by time of takeoff. Checked again yesterday and the aircraft had been changed to a high density 777 with 350+ seats so now there are 100++ seats open – sweet! Another win! I took this as a sign that it was meant to be. Called and moved my hotel checkin up by one day (original booking was Friday-Tuesday) and checked into my flight.

Here are some pics leading up to departure.

Just an example of typical jerk driver on the way to the airport. He wedged his way between the lanes to the front. Cutting lines is all too common on the roads here.

Very awkward design inside the airport and the dark floors absorb light. They decided to go with this giant teddy bear for the cool price of $1million USD (not a joke). I think I am in the wrong line of business..

    Departing Doha
It’s the Wednesday night and my flight takes off in a few hours, I have still not received notification I have been onloaded yet which is odd since there were so many seats available.. I checked at the staff travel counter and I am told there are weight restrictions. She tells me to wait 30 minutes and check back later. Uh oh. It is not uncommon for locals (very wealthy Qataris) to take their cars with them on trips so now I am worried that perhaps they changed the plane to accommodate additional cargo and I was going to have a problem.

I start to sweat it and shoot my buddy a message letting him know what’s going on. Damn these ID90 tickets.. After about 30 minutes, I get a text and email confirmation – I’m on! I quickly grab my ticket, breeze through customs with my e-gate perk (similar to TSA prescreening – e-gate is a simple scan in and out with the Qatar ID card and verification via finger swipe) and head towards the gate. On the way I stop by the ATM to withdraw some cash. The maximum amount is 2,000USD but as soon as the cash comes out it seems a bit off, I take a closer look and realize I’ve been paid in 50s. Woof. After shaking off the first L of the trip, I realized that unfortunately I didn’t have any time to stop by the Diner’s lounge pre flight for a drink (2nd L!) so I simply continue to walk through Doha International Airport’s new airport and continue heading to the gate.

Once I get onboard and to my seat (aisle seat in middle arrangement. 3 x 3 x 3) someone else is already seated in my group of 3 so I start looking for an empty row and spot one next to me. After they announce that all passengers are on board I quickly jump to the empty row and from there I am able to sleep a good majority of the trip sprawled out across the 3 seats. Definitely a Win, I’m back on track. In the last few hours I watch American Hustle, which I really enjoyed, have breakfast on board and prep for the next two legs. Next stop Philly.

Touchdown, Philly! No, not the Eagles kind.
Two days before my flight I booked a full fare 1 way ticket from Philly to Vegas via Detroit with Delta to ensure I get to Vegas as early as possible. The cost of this ticket was around $200 which is not too bad considering last minute. The original plan was to land and quickly check-in for my flight and grab a nice breakfast with real bacon (pork is restricted in Qatar). I figured 1 hour 45 minutes was enough time to make the connection at Philly, layover in Detroit is only 33 minutes so it’s going to be tight on the second leg but wow did I grossly underestimate the Philly layover.
Even though we arrived quite early and there weren’t a many folks at customs, it took forever just to get through. I would love to do the TSA Prescreen but it’s not worth it for me if I am only flying through 1 time a year but after this experience I still might consider it. It takes me more than 45 minutes to get through customs and sprint towards checkin at Delta. As it turns out, I am at Terminal A and need to go to Terminal D/E which is a good distance away. Somehow I manage to catch the shuttle at perfect time and get dropped off just in time. There is an issue trying to get my bag checked so late but somehow, it all worked out minus the breakfast with bacon.. board the plane and my seat is a window seat in the very last row. Ugh, hopefully that doesn’t impact the next layover.. Next stop: Detroit.

    Michigan Sucks
Land into Detroit basically on time and have a short layover (33 min). I arrive at Gate A4 or something quite low and find out I need to get to Gate A68++ which is on the exact other side of terminal, not how I thought this would pan out but not surprised at the same time. I continue the mad race and catch the in-terminal train to the other side to make the flight. Once boarded and after the door is closed, we are informed there is a delay due to a maintenance issue so they have to reopen the door to allow the maintenance team to evaluate from inside. During this process about 3 more folks board the process and they are now required to redo the safety announcement. We are delayed 1 hour on the ground and I am now starving having not eaten properly for awhile.

Finally after we are cleared I try to purchase one of the snack packs but they are limited to basically salami cuts/nuts/fruit snacks/oreos/add’l junk food. The family behind me very kindly offers their salami cuts as they do not eat meat so I return the favor with some of the items I was not interested in. The flight to Vegas is usually full of happy ambitious folks but due to the delay everyone seems quiet and irritated. I do not mind so much as I am on the last leg. Bring on Sin City!!

    IMG-20141002-03009.jpg
Oh, there's the sun. I suppose it is true.

Last row. Window. 33 minute layover. Challenge accepted.

    Vegas
Finally arrive in my favorite city in the world. It is after 2pm now so I am ready to grab my bag and hit the taxi line. Quite a few folks but not as bad as I’ve seen it so I wait for it and get ready to play taxi roulette. Weather is perfect, not too hot not too cold so I don’t mind waiting the 10 minutes. Also wish I had someone to bet with on over/under for the taxi stand number but I go ahead play the guessing game myself and shoot for #7 but wound up in lucky #1, win!
I tell the taxi driver cosmo and wait to see if he’s going to pull one over on me. He metions there is a way he’d rather take behind Aria because of construction and I get a bit agitated and tell him what I’m paying (nothing over $18) and anything out of the way is on him. We get to Cosmo and the ‘construction’ is a couple of blocked lanes turning into the Casino. No issues and light traffic. Taxi is 17 + 2 bucks so we’re good.

    Checking in
Check into the Autograph Lounge and there are 2 folks working and I quickly get served. The only complaint I have about this lounge is the door is rather heavy so at first pull I surprisingly had to put extra effort into getting it open so it didn’t make me feel any better with that damn purple suitcase..

My offers are supposed to be 2 nights in One Bedroom Terrace and 2 nights in City Room. I ask for complimentary upgrade and after trying to sell me the One Bedroom Terrace I tell him I’m not interested in paying since it was supposed to be comp’ed at least two nights and he offers the Terrace Suite (2 queens as I have a buddy coming along shortly). I oblige and ask for East Tower. He puts me on the 68th floor but it is not a fountain view which I wanted to initially switch out, then decided against as I doubted much time would be spent in the room regardless.

    Game Time
Quickly make my way up to the room and start to unpack and consider a shower before talking myself into one quick throw of the dice.. head downstairs for some $10 craps and see Nick and Billy, a couple of fun dealers at Cosmo that I really enjoyed playing with from last trip. They are slow to recall last time I was there which isn’t too surprising since last time the wives were the ones getting attention but they eventually recall and we play catch up on the summer trips.

I manage to play for around 3 hours and end up +$135. Good start. Head back to the room to shower and change then make my way down for some Secret Pizza. Make my way back to the Craps table and the table is cold so I mix in some Don’t Pass/Don’t Come play and couldn’t win with that either. Shooters were going Point/Seven Out faster than we could place any bets. End session down $135 so now I’m even.

Decided to then play some DDB on the floor and quickly drop $50 at 7/5 DDB before walking away. Finally strolled over to the giant Video Craps game where I made a killing previously in Tampa’s Hard Rock casino playing Don’ts but the payouts and odds are different on this machine and before I know it I’m in for about $200. I call it quits for now a bit frustrated and head up to the room to get a quick nap and wait for my buddy, K to arrive.

    Thursday late night reunion
I had set my alarm for shortly after 11pm but snoozed right through it. Eventually I can keep my eyes open long enough to check my msgs and see that K had been delayed in ATL so was now 30min-1 hour behind. No complaints on my end. Eventually drag myself out of bed to get ready for his arrival. K gives me a call close to 1am once he is in the taxi and I head down to greet him for the first time since my wedding in February. Good times.
K meets up and show him the room and let him get ready so we can go get drinks and do some gambling. We make a quick stop at Bond Bar since they have added the extra tables and I SWEAR I remember a 3:2 payout for blackjack. After playing a bit I realize it is only 6:5 after getting my first BJ and getting paid $60 on a $50 bet. We had played for awhile and they were closing down the bar. I finished down $125 but had numerous Crown and Gingers so was feeling good.

After doing a bit of wandering we decide on heading to Queue Bar to play some VP and catch up - Bond Bar was a bit too loud for trying to carry a conversation. I lost about $30 on BP but we raked in the drinks so it was probably a break even at the end of the day. Next to us is an Aussie who was pretty entertaining and after a couple of hours of playing video poker and entertaining conversations he made us promise to put in a sports bet on his rugby team the next day. We promise him and basically call it a night (follow up: we tried to book a bet the following day but couldn’t find a sports book betting on Rugby so we made prop bets between each other to keep the promise). By now it's close to 5am and we are hungry so I suggest my favorite place for breakfast, The Henry. I was supposed to do the 25 dollar bet to cover the meal but figured we could play catch up the next day. We manage to get in feeling great from the drinks and slam our meals as fast as they come out. I really love the hash browns there, so so so good. After that we head back to the room and decide to take advantage of the free in room movie watch Godzilla and crack open some beers we purchased across the street at the CVS by Planet Hollywood. Sam Adams Oktoberfest is the weapon of choice and I don’t think I made it through the second one before passing out. First day is considered a success.

    Net gambling thus far:
    +$135 Cosmo Craps
    -$135 Cosmo Craps
    -$50 Cosmo VP (Floor - 7/5 DDB)
    -$200 Cosmo Video Craps
    -$125 Cosmo BJ (Bond Bar)
    -$30 Cosmo VP (Queue Bar – 6/5 BP w/progressive)
-$1 Sports Bet (Prop bet - Rugby)

    Friday - Day 2
It is now Friday and I have had a few decent hours of sleep (I believe from around 7am – noonish). We manage to get up and go place some sports bets and get lunch. Here is where it starts to get hazy.. detailed notes are crucial for TRs and I always get off to a good start and it heavily declines from there. My records show that I ran two losing sessions of Craps at -$350 and -$100 at Cosmo somewhere between the previous evening’s VP at Queue bar and placing sports bets in afternoon. If I were a gambling man (which I am), I would probably say that the -350 session very well might be included in the previous evening as I believe we had a quick craps session around lunch time. Fortunately I was able to record the loss, unfortunately, I was not sober enough to remember.

For lunch we decide on Burgr and get through with a very short wait (roughly 5-10 minutes). Burgers were good as I went with a basic bacon cheeseburger and K had the Euro burger. Upon entering I noticed a table that was about to be cleaned and it had a full stack of fries so I should have taken it as a sign not to order full. K and I got our own fries, I got the regular with Curry and Chipotle ketchups and he got the Sweet Potato fries. They were OK, but excessive and not good enough for me to feel like I should eat them all. We walk through the Sports Book at PHO since we are there and compare lines against Cosmo and wait to check against MLife properties.

By now we decide we should go lay up and find a good spot to play some VP and watch the 3 Friday night games. I am still reeling over sleeping through the Oregon game on Thursday as I was planning on taking Arizona in the points and sure enough Oregon did not only not cover, they were upset. Now I am determined to get my bets in and make up for the missed opportunity so we place our bets and decide to check out the Sports Bar in Bellagio thanks to a buddy’s recommendation and Triglomane’s efforts. Stopping at the craps table along the way I finally start to get confidence back in my roll but still manage to leave behind $110 at the table – I simply hadn’t caught the good rolls at this point. We started working on Vodka Red Bulls and Crown & Gingers and head over to the Sports Bar to find a couple of seats and start to enjoy ourselves. The first two NCAA games are going well and we manage to pick the right teams to cover. The third game is BYU–Utah State and I believe the line was 20.5 for BYU. We had selected BYU although I did strongly consider it may be a closer game since it is somewhat of an in-state rivalry. BYU got off to a slow start, then their star quarterback breaks his leg and is out for season. Utah State goes on to win 35-20. Parlay busted and $20 into $120 no more. K and I are angry throughout but then consider had we bet the other way we would have been loving it. Not sure if I like that about sports betting or not..

Either way the bartender was great, atmosphere was solid, so overall it was a good time and I would be happy to go back. We leave Bellagio with an overall good experience and head back to Cosmo. Once we arrive back at cosmo, we go play some more VP and drinks at Queue bar - I manage to post my first winning session at +$10. Huge win! From here on out, the rest of the night is a blur again but K goes to bed and I manage to stay up until 6am get back into the room for 2 hours of sleep before waking up at 8am for College Gameday and the Ohio State Maryland game at 9am. Day 2 is complete and a success minus the fact that we completely forgot to eat dinner. Big VP day coming ahead with lots of quad rallying.

hey now, i resent this! michigan is awesome. detroit sucks. is the only reason you're saying michigan sucks is because of the gate locations in detroit's airport? blame the airport, not the entire state! but then again, you're from ohio, so you're required to hate michigan i guess. :peace:

    UPSET Saturday!
K and I wake up, although I am feeling the time difference and lack of sleep. Two hours of sleep from 6am-8am and now I am watching Gameday on our TVs. I had placed a 7 team Parlay and bet 5 games (including OSU-Maryland) the day before while we were at the Cosmo Sports Book so we had a lot to watch. Since we are OSU alum, that game was first priority. Realizing that we had skipped dinner the evening before, we decided to order room service. We go with Fruit Smoothies and the breakfast burritos. Roughly $70 but I have close to 200 in hotel comp so utilize that and enjoy the comfort of the couch. Food was delicious and really nice start to the day.

    IMG-20141004-03023.jpg

OSU covers and the rest of the games are mixed results. One bet we decided on was to go with the highest line and cheer on the blow out. We chose ECU at 42.5 against the SMU Mustangs as they have not scored a TD all season - low and behold they score 3! We were on the wrong side again - bummer. I go 3/5 to basically break even and K doesn’t fare so well with 2/5 on his bets. We decide to head out and grab a seat for the next wave of games starting around noon local time (3-3:30pm EST) and there are a LOT of great games with a LOT of upsets. We make it downstairs and throw the dice at Cosmo first and I manage to post a +$135 session. Happy with that we walk to Aria and grab a Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks (I had to since we don’t have it here) along the way. Living in the Desert I definitely miss the fall. There are basically two seasons here, hot and almost tolerable. Even though I wanted to avoid Aria bc of the strict comp’ed drink policy, I had to take K there to show him and figured we’d try our luck to see if one of the better bartenders was working.

We find seats on the back side and have 4-5 games to choose from. The villain bartender is not there so all is well. We start with drinks and make friends with the couple next to us, huge Alabama fans, and a couple of others along the rail. Bama ends up losing, and upset after upset just continues and it was a great day to be back in the States watching football. Somewhere along the way I start to go on a hot streak of quads and ran my money up to the point where I had started with quarters and was eventually playing max credits on $5 limits. I hit multiple quads and the machine just kept giving. At one point, I am dealt this playing 6/5 BP..

I believe I 'should' hold the full house, however, I explain to my buddy that since FH only pays 6 instead of 7, it might be better to go for it. That, and I'm in Vegas "YOLO!" Drop the 6's and deal.

    IMG01052-20141004-1536.jpg

BOOM! I couldn't be running better. During this time, the infamous villain also shows up (Tyrone? Tyrell? 40s-50s White guy) and it starts to put us in a bad mood. He refuses to comp K’s next drink because he doesn’t have a players card in the machine, even though it was not an issue previously. Then of course he makes his comments about making sure it’s not blinking and max credits are being utilized and so on. I understand if folks are enforcing the policy becausec their company is on them, but as K mentioned, it’s the way this guy deals with people that simply makes him intolerable. I refuse to let it dampen my spirits too much as I am still on a hot streak but K was not winning and had gotten pissed with the situation so eventually we called it after the games and make our way back to Cosmo. Along the way we stop by Craps table at Aria and I dump about -$250 of previous $350 winnings. I consider not playing any more craps rest of the way..

I had received 2 comp'ed tickets to the Lucky Rice event at Cosmo but I am exhausted so decide to take a 'nap' for about an hour from 6:30pm - 7:30pm so we can go attend the event. Rookie mistake. We wound up crashing by 7pm for the evening and I eventually woke up at 5am slightly regretting it. At that time K was asleep so I went downstairs to give my hand at craps playing dark side against the drunks. Initially I was crushing it with $15 min on Don't Pass, laying odds, then playing 2 Don't Come bets and laying varying odds. Drunk table breaks up and I'm throwing against myself at 50 min at one point and decide to move to another table.

After walking to one of the other 2 remaining tables, I realize everyone is playing the Don't Pass and just laying max odds. Heaven! I heard them being loud earlier and assumed it was a hot table but as it turns out they were passing along to the worst throwers. I get involved and first shooter hits a point first before bricking so it is a break even. Then my roll comes along and I can't hit a 7 to save my life. Eventually I fold to table pressure to pass to the next guy who eventually rolls out but by that time I had dropped 850-900 so after two hours I put my tail between my legs and walk away, but not back to bed. I go to a STP machine and put 50 in, find a DDB to drop 30, then on my way back to bed I found a Wheel of Fortune quarter machine (close to east tower elevators) and hit this small gem..

    IMG01055-20141005-0547.jpg

followed by another spin and got this..

    IMG01057-20141005-0548.jpg

That was awesome since I have rarely seen anything but 25/30 hit on those with an occasional 75. I put a little bit back then cashed out up $130. Bed time is much needed so I head back for bed and get ready for a Sunday which involved a botched strip club visit, success on a short strip crawl, and an 18 hour rally.

Here are some add'l hits (others to be displayed later)..

My perspective on travel has certainly changed from living over here!
Thanks! More to come later – last day involved some funny stories but it’s 4am so I will have to finish rest tomorrow.

Indeed I did, but basically the fort included pillows protecting my feet from the cart coming down the aisle. They can be quite unforgiving..

Only poking a bit of fun at the state up north since I am an OSU Alum. Even though I am biased the short layover then delay following it did not leave me with a good experience. Otherwise, I would have liked to have checked the terminal out a bit more.

All in good fun, and thanks!

Haven't read completely through the tr yet, but how do you like living in Qatar? I've heard that they pay for your housing while working there? Have you picked up the Arabic language if you do not speak it already? (I am Lebanese)

My good friends father works in Qatar (some sort of construction) and flies back and forth all the time. Also, Qatar airlines was or is the best overseas airline from what I've read awhile ago.

As far as the VP info from Bellagio, was the game that you found from my list 9/5 JoB 3-play at the sportsbook? Because I ripped that one from VPFree2, I never got to that bar... :( If you played anything else there, I would love to know.

Don't worry, the rest of the Big Ten alums will back you up (including me)...well, maybe except Nebraska.

Well, I'm glad your balls overruled your brain because your brain was wrong...:evillaugh In 6/5 Bonus only, it is correct to break Aces full. I've never hit 4 Aces trying to break Aces full in any game though. Bastard machines...:grrr:
