Do you give Blackjack advice to others at the table if they ask? I find it funny some people don't and others do. I always say "this is what the book says, but it's your money you play how you want". That is pretty much my standard answer.

I don't, but I'm a pretty novice player. I do like it when I can strike up a conversation and talk about proper strategy with someone at the table....if they are nice about it, like the approach you mentioned, Nut. I don't play the game often enough to be super comfortable with it, but do enjoy it if I can find a low-limit table.

I see we'll be in LV at the same time....good luck!

I try to do exactly the same as well, as I posted in the other thread, often I will actually show them the card.

Sometimes I will just say what the correct play is without qualifying the answer. I usually end up regretting that as it never fails that they will lose the hand and someone else will say "that's not how I would play it"

I also find that the number of people asking me for advice is directly proportionate to the size of my stack relative to table minimums. I'm way more likely to get asked when I'm playing blacks on a $10 Free Bet table then when I'm betting greens at a $50 table.

I help friends and acquaintances without hesitation. Otherwise, I'll usually let the dealer give the advice.

I carry a print-out of the basic strategy for S17 and H17 from the wizard of odd's site, so if there is a dispute or a debate among the players and dealer, I can refer to that. Otherwise, since I generally know the proper play, I answer the same way you do: do what you want since it's your money, but the math says the proper play is to hit, etc.

I've had just as many dealers give bad strategy as good strategy. Oddly enough, the black dealers and Asian dealers almost always know the proper play -- white women seem to give the worst advice, for whatever reason. Yes, I'm a white male. No, this isn't racist or sexist. It's my anecdotal experience. I'm guessing the white women are the dealers who are least likely to also be players, so they have no reason to learn all of the borderline plays.

More than once, I've experienced dealers who've actually said "The book is not always right!"
I usually chuckle & reply with, "yeah - that's the problem with math - always changing when you least expect it."

"The book" is just math. It is not a predictor of a future event. It only tells you what events are most likely with a given set of conditions.

There was a dealer at LVC once that argued with me about doubling my A-8 against her 6.
When she dealt me a 7, she snapped, "See? You had 19 & now look at your hand!".
Then, when she busted her 16, I snapped back, "See? My 16 is just as good as 19...only I win twice as much!"

If the player is a novice and has asked, then sometimes yes, but most times I'll tell them to ask the dealer for advice.

    But unsolicited "advice" is rude.

I had the worst blackjack experience of my life yesterday. My husband understands the game well on a simulator, but hates to play live because he feels pressured. I spent about an hour talking him into playing at a $10, single deck table with me. As we sat down to buy in, me at first base and him on my left, an agitated woman walked up and plunked down $200 and asked if she could have first base. We moved to the left and gave her first base as I don't really have a preference and there was plenty of room at the table.

As my husband tried to get the feel for the game, I quietly helped him understand how to place his bet, signal the dealer for another card, and stand. The agitated woman began to lose and grew more agitated rolling her eyes and chuffing at us.

One one hand, the dealer showed a bust card. My husband had a four and a five (total of nine). He was about to ask for a card, when suddenly the woman blurted out, "Don't take the dealer's bust card! I'm betting a lot money!" This only confused him because he knew he needed a card. I asked her to please stop confusing him. Annoyed, she moved to third base and insisted she was going to "control the table". She persisted in making rude comments about novice players. After a couple more hands, she colored up, made a rude comment, and stalked off in a huff because my husband either did or didn't take a card against her unsolicited advice. Not only did she ruin his concentration, but she made the game completely unenjoyable. He was so put off by the experience that the chances of getting him to sit and play the game with me again are now slim to none.

My advice for blackjack know-it-alls? Mind your own business. The other players at the table are not responsible for your wins/losses. You want to control the table? Have the casino open a private table just for you. Otherwise, shut your mouth.

What a B*tch, this one time 15 yrs ago in Niagra falls , wife and I played at the casino, using BS, a slightly older couple were already there, playing Psychic rules apparently, every time I made correct strategy hit or stay call he'd scoff, softly at first then quite rudely...1hr later we'd doubled up and they were broke...I made sure to thank him quite loudly for his money, I hoped he wasn't Canadian:ssst:

100% agree. I also find that many of the loudmouths will advocate the wrong play (like in your 9 vs. bust card example).

If asked, I will do the same - "book says X, but you should do whatever you are comfortable with". I almost never give unsolicited advice - agree that can really annoy people... perhaps a "double!" to the player who has 11 against dealer 6 and is not paying attention and about to take a hit.

I never profiled dealers in that way but agree entirely that only about half the advice dealer give is correct. Once I was playing when I had not expected to play. Hadn't practiced for a long time. Female Oriental dealer was handing out perfect advice to everybody. I said I was rusty, asked her to correct me AFTER the hand if I made any mistakes, and she did once. Pair split or soft hand, don't recall which. Won a purple plus a green for a tip and quit at the end of her shift.

Yes, I tell them what the book says if they ask, sometimes with a very brief explanation if it's just us at the table.

If asked, i will always offer advice, but as others said, I saw something like "The book says...". That way they don't blame me. If they lose the hand I might even say "Damn book steered us wrong again!" and laugh....
I never offer advice, or comment in anyway on anyone's play unless asked.

I had a dealer one time who said, "Why would you surrender and automatically lose when you still have a chance of winning if you play?" It was when I surrendered my 16 against his 10. Then, when I had a 12 against his 10, he said, "You surrendered before. Why don't you surrender now?" He didn't ask these questions as if he was trying to understand. He asked it like saying, "You made a bad decision in surrendering." People who don't know basic strategy but express their wrong opinion, irritate me. I've only seen a handful of people who play proper basic strategy, and I also noticed they keep to themselves. I think they are also counting so they don't want to make ado.
