Yep... my apologies to VivaMattyVegas... he was right... I was wrong... apparently there aren't enough "locals" to pay that price for the buffet and keep it busy during the week.

I get why the need to close it.

But, it just starts the downhill slide that only gets worse from here on out.

How do you "short" a casino?

One of my first thoughts visiting during opening week was how the heck are they going to keep this many restaurants open.

Once places start to close, it looks gloomy. No one wants gloomy on vacation or even locals out for the evening.

The buffet was AWFUL. I ate at every restaurant in the property and would never eat there or Ku Noodles again.

Opening at the end of the peak season. What do they expect. Vegas slows down right after Labor Day. If anything its just to adjust to the fall season, which is fine. Its about making adjustments before its too late.

Agreed. On one hand it may be the sound operational decision but it also just makes a place feel more dead, which is what led to the decision in the first place.

As far as shorting it there is nothing in the public market but I can put you in touch with some dealers who could structure a synthetic short on the debt, or you may even be able to sell a default swap directly to a lender. But in either case you'd probably need to do at least $10mm notional, if not much more. :poke:

My prediction is that they will scale the prices down a bit. They will not survive on the weekend El-Lay 20-bopper party crowd alone!

As for the comments on closures making it look gloomy, I agree except in this case because the buffet is tucked away on the 2nd floor anyways and you would never just "pass by" it unless you were looking for it.

That's very true... I just thought they could ride the "new thing" deal a bit longer.

so what are they doing to entice me, a gambler, to enter the premises?

the old Sahara got me in the door with the only $25 match play in the coupon book. as a person who tends to spend my time downtown and off the strip (pinball, ellis island and orleans) you might be able to get me in the door if you give me a reason to gamble there.

but this is the new era, the SLS wants people who want to spend their money on fancy, expensive meals. or want me to love the thumping beats and expensive cocktails of a crowded nightclub where the crowd is predominantly half my age.

keep doin' what you're doin' SLS. you don't need me. and you clearly have a winning formula.

Most of Vegas when you think about it, is fancy food. Most of the restaurants in the strip are even more fancier than what is at SLS. Umami $25 PP, Katsuya $35-40pp, 800deg pizza $15pp, Griddle $15-20. These arent that high prices as many make it seem to be. It's a wide price range as far as selection. Then you have Bazaar Meats which is priced like other high end steak houses such as Cut or Carnevino. If the food is that good at Bazaar, I'm sure it'll draw people to go there for the quality of the food. They will be willing to pay for it as much as they are to the other dozen steak houses that cost about the same.

Alot of people ragged on Cosmo for their "fancy" expensiveness. But many of those restaurants are surviving. Holsteins is like Umami. Bazaar is actually a higher end steak place than STK, and will draw meat lovers to it. Griddle seems like a Hash Hash A Go Go, so it'll appeal to many. And 800deg is well known to be good, so its kinda like a Secret Pizza.

The only one that may not compete is the buffet and the asian place, but as far as restaurant choices, they have a sdecent line up.

I got invited to stay there again for free this past week and ended up canceling when I found out about the cut back hours. The buffet or Griddle Cafe would've been where I had dinner and both are now closed for dinner mid-week.

By the way, not a good sign when a hotel has been open a month and you're already getting multiple room offers without playing much.
