    My Trip Report

Prelude: When I returned from my last trip in late August, never did I imagine I’d be returning to Vegas within the next month. My mother-in-law had agreed to watch our kids for a few days, so my wife and I had planned our annual anniversary two-night getaway. This time, we had decided to go to Palm Springs. We booked a Travelzoo deal for the Desert Princess, which we knew was sort of old and in need of renovation, but we figured “How bad could it be?” and jumped on the great deal. However, once we made the reservation, it seemed every tripadvisor review of the Desert Princess was more damning than the last. Making matters worse, hotel rates throughout the Coachella Valley had skyrocketed from when I first started planning this trip, so there were few other viable options without a major splurge, and we were trying to keep this trip fairly economical.

Returning to Vegas was an option, but seeing that it was within 30 days of our last trip, we were precluded from using MyVegas comps at MGM properties. But then MyVegas introduced new rewards for Station Casinos properties, and suddenly a whole slew of new opportunities were opened to us! I realized we could get a free night at Green Valley Ranch and the second night came to only $54 through an Orbitz 15% off sale. I pitched the idea to my wife and she said yes, even though she’s much more averse to the four-hour drive than I am. We booked the rooms, canceled the Desert Princess reservation and purchased a few additional MyVegas rewards for Green Valley Ranch.

The plan for this trip was much different than the last, where we filled every minute with activities, shows and sightseeing. This trip was all about relaxation and some kid-free time together. Read on to find out what happened…

    Day One: Sunday, Sept. 21
We left home around 9:45 am and raced non-stop across the high desert to the St. Rose Parkway exit (where the M Resort is located), which cuts across to Henderson, home of Green Valley Ranch. We were quite hungry and looked for somewhere interesting to eat, but opted to just wait until we got to the hotel. We arrived around 1:30 and were immediately impressed with the beautiful architecture and landscaping at Green Valley Ranch. The porte cochere was very warm and inviting. Friendly valets greeted us and welcoming employees opened the lobby doors for us.

We checked in without incident and were given a few upgrade options, but they were all insanely priced, especially considering the great rates we got for the rooms. We were fine with a standard king room and were assigned to room 2034. The casino is actually on level 2 as well, so that worked out perfectly throughout our stay.

The room was very nice and my wife was pleasantly surprised it had a deep soaking tub in addition to the shower. The front desk agent told me all of the pool view rooms are considered upgrades, so our window only offered a nondescript view of palm trees and a red tile roof. From what we saw so far, the whole property was immaculate. We set up our DIY bar, which consisted of a couple bottles of vodka (one vanilla and one regular), 2 bottles of red wine, some canned Jose Cuervo margaritas, Bloody Mary mix, and Sprite, Mountain Dew and Pepsi Max for mixers. I fetched a bucket of ice and we poured ourselves drinks before heading out to find some food.

We had dinner reservations at GVR’s steakhouse, so we didn’t want to stuff ourselves at lunch. We found the food court and chose an Italian place called Villa Pizza. I got a pepperoni stromboli, my wife got a slice of Neopolitan pizza and we split a Caesar salad and a Coke. Everything was delicious!

We retreated to our room and relaxed for a bit before deciding to check out the pool. We first peeked into “The Pond,” GVR’s adults-only pool that was slated to have a DJ today. Aside from thumping bass, there was very little activity in there, so we continued over to the main pool. They checked our room key and informed us the pool would be closing at 5:00 while giving us towels. Quite simply, the pool here is awesome. One edge has a sandy beach which continues into a portion of the pool. However, the sand is very coarse and heavy, so it doesn’t stray from that area of the pool. It really feels quite good to step into this sand. The water was a great temperature that made it very easy to get in but was still refreshing in the 95-degree heat.

When they said the pool would close at 5:00, I hadn’t realized that it was already almost 4:30. (I swear time passes doubly fast when you’re in Vegas – or in this case, Henderson.) We swam a little, laid in the sun for a little and then after a while, an employee came and informed us the pool was closing. We admired the property a bit more before returning to our room. My wife kept using the word “grand” to describe the environs. Indeed, it is beautiful everywhere you look, blending old-world architecture with modern touches to create a very comforting atmosphere.

Back at the room, we put some music on the Bose in-room sound system, drank some drinks and just enjoyed some uninterrupted time together, something we don’t get very often with our kids at home. We had 8:30 dinner reservations and needed to redeem some MyVegas rewards first. Earlier we had also gotten our Boarding Pass cards and entered a drawing at 8:15, so we went to see if our numbers got called before dinner. No luck. We each redeemed a MyVegas reward for $30 off a $60 purchase at Hank’s Fine Steaks in hopes that we could use them together. (I had called a few days prior and no one could give me a definitive answer.)

We were seated in a nice booth in the back of the restaurant and we presented the vouchers the players club desk had given us. Our very friendly waiter took them and said he’d make it work no matter what he had to do, so that was great. We just needed to order $60 worth of food (alcohol was excluded) for each voucher, which was easy here. I went for the prime bone-in Kansas City Strip (wet aged 14 days AND dry aged for 28 days) for $58 and added a caprese salad ($14) and the night’s special brussels sprouts side dish. My wife had the grass-fed filet mignon ($46), a hearts of palm salad and a side of mushrooms. The salads came out first:

    [IMG]IMG_20140925_142641 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

My caprese was great, with very moist fresh mozzarella. I’m not big on hearts of palm but my wife’s salad was full of greens, tomatoes and avocado. She loved it. Then the steaks and sides arrived:

My wife’s filet was outstanding while my strip steak was just good. I very rarely find a steak anymore with the texture that I prefer. My wife’s filet had it, but mine didn’t seem like it was aged at all, let alone wet and dry aged. They offered a variety of steak sauces that I really enjoyed: a peppercorn sauce, béarnaise, some sort of cilantro sauce and one other I can’t recall. The peppercorn sauce was delicious and I really enjoyed my steak, but it wasn’t quite everything I hoped it would be.

As far as I’m concerned, the brussels sprouts stole the show. They were amazing – panko crusted and perfectly cooked with little dollops of a soft cheese on top. The mushrooms were good but were served whole rather than sliced and sautéed as I would prefer, so they were rather firm. By the time we finished eating, we were stuffed and had no room for dessert. Still, the check was presented with a few small cookies and pastries, which was perfect. The MyVegas rewards saved us $60 and we got out for $147 out of pocket, including tip.

After dinner we finally hit the casino. I started on a 7/5 DDB nickel machine and hit quad 5s rather quickly:

    [IMG]IMG_20140921_220507 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

I ended up running those credits down to zero and lost $20. Then I found a pull pay (10/6) quarter DDB machine and lost another $20 very quickly. My wife was not doing well at all either. We were walking around trying to decide what to do when I spotted a Free Bet Blackjack table with only a $5 minimum. I’ve wanted to try this game for a while but I’ve never seen it lower than $15 minimum. I bought in for $20 and was on fire right out of the gate. Doubling and splitting for free is really fun, especially when it’s a loser hand anyway. Once I had two 8s vs. a face card for the dealer, so I split them and ended up winning both. I would never split against a face card in regular blackjack, but why not in this situation? I quickly found myself up $51 from my initial buy in. After losing two hands in a row, I got up and left. The $41 in winnings took me back to positive territory, so I was very happy.

I found my wife and she had encountered some luck, too. At one point she was down $80 but clawed her way back playing an assortment of slots. I lost another $5 on nickel DDB and then we played electronic roulette (with the real wheel) together for a while. We did well, hitting a number (11) and cashing out up $21. I then hit my second quad of the night, this time on Triple Play Super Times Pay nickel DDB, playing just one line.

    [IMG]IMG_20140921_233532 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

We messed around on a Bridesmaids machine for a bit and then called it a night around midnight. I was up $22 and my wife was down $23.

    Day Two: Monday, Sept. 22
Monday morning I woke up around 6:15 for some reason and couldn’t go back to sleep. Around 7:00 I decided to go on a walkabout to tour the property and take some pictures. I found a cool little vineyard area out near the pool and the sun was just starting to come up over the resort.

In case you haven’t picked up on it yet, we were very impressed by Green Valley Ranch. It’s well taken care of and just beautiful everywhere you look. Confident that my wife was still sleeping, I started gambling by losing $5 in a Super Times Pay Spin Poker nickel machine, and then lost another $5 in the same STP machine I was playing the night before. Without realizing it, I was setting the tone for the whole trip, hammering this one STP machine in hopes of hitting something big.

I returned to the room to check on my wife, but she was still sleeping so I made myself the first of several Bloody Marys. Figuring she probably wanted to sleep awhile, I returned to the casino and hit a couple quads:

    [IMG]IMG_20140922_084825 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

    [IMG]IMG_20140922_085736 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

I cashed out of the STP machine up $15 and decided to parlay it in a 10/6 DDB quarter machine. Just like the night before, though, it went nowhere. I barely hit anything and $20 was gone in the blink of an eye. I then tried my luck at a machine called “3 Way Action” poker, which I’d never seen before. I mostly hovered around even for 15 minutes or so and then it got boring. I lost a few more bucks back at the Triple Play STP machine, this time playing all three hands.

On a side note, I’ve never seen a wider variety of video poker machines than what they offer at GVR. It seemed everywhere you walked in the casino there was some different variation to play. Strangely, though, I don’t recall seeing any standard JOB machines. I assume they have JOB, but it seemed like the vast majority of their machines only offered specialty games of higher variance.

Eventually I got my wife a coffee from Starbucks in the food court and we got ready for the pool. I forgot to mention one of the best features of the pool in yesterday’s post –*ultra-comfortable padded chaise loungers! These were so great! Laying poolside has never been more relaxing. The pool was playing good music and we kept alternating between cooling off in the pool and laying out in the hot sun. About an hour later, we were ready for some lunch.

We’d purchased a MyVegas voucher for two lunch buffets at the Feast Buffet, but the line to get in was gigantic. As soon as she saw the line, my wife said, “Let’s just go to Fatburger” in the food court. It’s this kind of statement that reaffirms why I married her. I’ll never say no to Fatburger, so we went and enjoyed some delicious burgers and fries. After lunch we messed around on a few slots, playing the $3 of free play that my wife’s Boarding Pass card came with (mine came with none for some reason). I lost $5 during this time.

Then we returned to the pool for the remainder of the afternoon. Not much to mention as we just totally vegged out. We walked in with our own drinks and bought one beer from the pool bar – a 14.9 oz. Stella Artois was $7, which included the built-in tip. I thought that was a decent deal for a Vegas pool bar.

    [IMG]IMG_20140922_123033 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

When the pool closed at 5:00, we returned to our room and I was as red as a $5 casino chip. Fortunately it wasn’t sunburn as much as it was a temporary reaction, and it softened into tan by later in the night. We hung out in the room and got ready for dinner.

We fetched the car from the valet and traveled about a mile to a sushi place I’d found on Yelp called Midori Sushi. Oddly, we were the only ones in the whole restaurant when we arrived at 7:30. That was a bit disconcerting, but we embraced it rather than question it and loved all our food. We each got a large Asahi and then we split four specialty rolls –*a Rainbow Roll, the Tiger Roll, the Poison Roll and “The 7th Roll.” I expected us to eat more than that but we were really stuffed at that point, so we paid our bill ($71 incl. tip) and headed straight back to GVR.

    [IMG]IMG_20140922_200807 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

Seeing this was our last night of this short trip and we each had most of our bankrolls intact, it was time to do some gambling. I practically locked myself to that same Triple Play STP machine I’d been playing earlier and did a slow burn, hitting several quads and a few good multipliers, but no premiums. After a couple hours, I was down $70.

Meanwhile, my wife was hopping around a bank of nearby slots that included a Cleopatra Machine, Coyote Moon, Texas Tea and something else. At one point she emerged around the corner and told me to come take a look at something. It was on Cleopatra and I wasn’t really sure what she hit, but suddenly she had $182 in credits in the machine.

Down $70, I returned to the Free Bet Blackjack table hoping for it to resuscitate my bankroll like it had done the night before. No luck, though. Dropped another quick $20 there and was nearing my self-imposed $100 gambling budget.

I decided I was better off joining my winning half than continuing to fight my own battle. My wife and I played some more electronic roulette and a bunch of different slots together. Eventually she cashed out with two TITOs – one for $209 and another for $85. Awesome!

Around 1:00 am we decided to take advantage of the Grand Cafe’s special late-night menu. My wife ordered a $3.99 eggs, bacon, hash browns and toast and I splurged on the $6.99 NY Steak and eggs, which also came with hash browns and toast. Everything was really good and hit the spot right before bed.

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_004943 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

A full day of drinking had taken its toll on my wife so we made our way back to the room for some much-needed rest. I think we were both asleep the minute our heads hit the pillows.

    Day Three: Tuesday, Sept. 23
As soon as I woke up I suspected I was going to have a severely hungover wife on my hands. If only my hunches in the casino were so prescient. I slept a little later today and then read the paper, watched some TV, walked around the hotel and checked on our room charges at the front desk. While there, I also requested a late check out and was granted 1:00.

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_090155 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_090245 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

Unfortunately, my wife didn’t budge from the bed until around 11:00. So I continued roaming around and did some gambling, checking in on her progress every half hour or so. Knowing my wife had practically locked in a winning trip for us, I exceeded my loss limit and continued playing. I lost $15 in a session on the STP machine, hitting only one quad:

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_103837 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

Then I returned for another session and had a huge chance to make this a winning trip – dealt four-to-a-royal with 4X multiplier engaged. The right card here would suddenly put me up more than $600 on the trip…

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_113904 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

    ...But it didn’t happen:

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_113932 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

I lost another $16 on that session, and knew I needed to call it quits pretty soon. So what game do you play when you’re at the end of your bankroll? Let It Ride, of course. I found an empty $5 table and sat down and did okay for a while. Then another guy sat down to my left and seemed like he couldn’t lose –*he won at least three hands in a row and was pressing his bets each time. If only he’d sat down to my right instead! I ended up losing $15 more here. I was done and my trip was officially a loser.

Around 11:30 my wife finally started showing signs of life, although she still didn’t feel well at all. A call down to the front desk got our late checkout extended another hour to 2:00, which was sincerely appreciated by us. This gave my wife a chance to take a rejuvenating bath and by check-out time, she was finally feeling better and ready to tackle what remained of the day.

We checked out and got our car from the valet, but then we just circled around and self-parked near the casino entrance. This way we didn’t have to check our suitcases at the bell desk.

My wife cashed her TITOs and we considered using our MyVegas buffet vouchers for lunch. However, the line was still huge (it was always huge!) so we decided to forget it and just refund those loyalty points when we got home. Instead, I used the MyVegas app to buy a reward for $10 off a $20 purchase at the Grand Cafe, so we returned there for lunch. I had fish and chips while my wife had the patty melt. We also split a caprese salad to start. This is a good coffee shop and we enjoyed our food.

We wanted to get on the road by about 4:00, but we also wanted to squeeze in one last gambling session. My wife gave me $20 of her winnings, which disappeared into the STP nickel machine playing 3 plays this time. I got dealt another potentially trip-saving four-to-a-royal, but it wasn’t meant to be.

    [IMG]IMG_20140923_152421 by itslikeimsayin, on Flickr

My wife was losing most of her $20 but then finished on a nice run, including a $22.50 bonus on Texas Tea that gave her yet another winning session. We eventually did a little souvenir shopping in the hotel gift shop and hit the road. The drive home was uneventful and we made it back in about 3:45. All told, I lost $164 gambling while my wife probably won a little over $200.

Even better than the win was the escape to a beautiful hotel and two kid-free nights to celebrate 19 years of marriage together. We never even got near the Strip or Las Vegas city limits, but I’m still chalking it up as another great Vegas trip!

Sounds like you enjoyed GVR so when you return, the buffet has another line for hotel guests which will reduce your waiting time. It's a good buffet so be sure to try it. We will be there tomorrow
    for 4 nights, can't wait!

Good report! Too bad you couldn't get at least one of those royals!

With those pics, I'm more mad we didn't squeeze this place in this last trip, esp since her dad used to watch "American Casino".

As far as the lack of JoB, according to vpfree they have 9/6 JoB for quarters+ on the "up to 99.8%" banks. For nickels it's generally tough to find a good JoB game. Bonus is almost always the better choice.

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone.

Good to know! We saw various lines but didn't notice any specifically for hotel guests. Next time...

This might mean I spend too much time on VMB, but walking around the casino seeing bank after bank of different VP variations, I kept thinking to myself, "Tringlomane would have a field day here! And he might even need to look up some of these payback percentages."

LOL What do you think was the most "whack job" VP variant there?

Some of these places with lots of good VP (like South Point) seem to have the same 10-12 variants through the entire casino. Great to see them all have the good paytables, but also sorta boring having all the Game Kings be clones of one another.

I have no idea. I almost started taking pictures of all the different varieties but then that seemed too daunting of a task. The "3 way action" game was one I hadn't seen/played before, but they had spin poker, STP, spin poker+STP, Ultimate X, Sequential Royals, the "Suited Royals" game, something called Double Up DDB (or something like that) that required 10 credits, they had VP machines where natural 4OAKs earned a bonus spin on a wheel up above the screen, the list went on an on.

Double Up DDB? Did you mean "No Risk Double Up"? CET properties used to have that game too, but they were smart and got rid of those crappy WMS units and replaced them with new, less crappy IGT units. :rolleyes2: 3 way action is all over Vegas but NO where else outside of Nevada. I've played that game at Rio (no longer there). A horrific paytable but it was pretty fun as i ran good (and yes, I would definitely need to look it up for the payback for either of those games...lol). Gold Coast has a ridiculous 50 units of 3 way action!

    Thanks smartone.

No, I don't think that was it. It seemed like an even more "extreme" version of DDB, where you had to pay double but paytables were doubled, too, or something like that. I only took a quick glance at it and realized it was a 10-coin game and didn't pay much attention otherwise. I think there may have been a Triple version, too. Sorry I can't be more specific.
