After a trip to Harrahs Laughlin and a win they withheld tax. I can understand in Laughlin they may not be registered to pay the win in full to UK residents so have to apply for the refund.

I know I have read on here before how to do it but can't find it. Can someone point me in the right direction please?

    Thanks

I'm surprised they withheld tax. My understanding is that the casino would issue an ITIN right away to a UK resident and then pay the full amount without any withholding.
Since there was withholding, you would now have to file a US tax return. In order to do that you need to obtain an ITIN (individual tax identity number....like a SS for non US residents). You can apply for the ITIN at the same time you submit the tax return. To obtain an ITIN you will need to send your passport or a certified copy. A certified copy is the way to go.....who wants to be without their passport. if the withholding occurred in 2014, you'll have to wait until 2015 to file your 2014 return. The casino must have issued you a tax slip (i believe a 1042-s) to submit with your tax return.

Once you have the ITIN, you should be able to provide the number and your UK passport to avoid future withholding.
