Guys, guys, guys....where should i stay?

Long time no post. So here it is,

Iam a converted strip stayer. Not really a fan anymore and will be staying DT in Nov for 5 nights with my better half for a birthday trip.

Currently Iam thinking of the following:

Golden Gate Suite - Stayed here before. Love the casino/vibe. No sports book though.
Main Street Station Deluxe room - Stayed here before. I like the casino, no resort fee and the fact that its a little ways from the action. But.... a little dated.
The D - Never stayed but have played lots. Like the vibe of the casino and it has a sports book

We arrive for the trip on Weds and leave the following Monday. Currently our rough plans are as follows:

Gamboooooling DT, well duh.
Poker for me for a bit.
Circ show
Dinner at L'Atelier
Probably a day at the strip before dinner/show. Maybe, I mean I really don't like it there much anymore
Football on Sunday. Suggestion for places to watch DT welcome?
Maybe a day trip
I guess the spa

We're both in our mid 30s {jesus im getting old} and have manageable drinking and gaming problems.

Any and all advice welcomed on both where to stay and what to do based on the above.

Nicest rooms DT are at Golden Nugget, though their basic rate rooms are nearly a half mile from Fremont St.! We always stay at MSS but you are correct in that their rooms are a little dated - they did finally get new flat screen TV's however. We haven't stayed at the D since their conversion from Fitzgeralds, so I cant comment on it - and we absolutely hate the vibe/noise, so I'm not a good source for this casino. If you decide on MSS ask for rooms ending in 01, 03, 05, etc (side facing Plaza and as far from train as possible) Lower floors with these numbers will have noise from heating/air conditioning units on roof of casino.
Have a great trip - I wish I could say I was in my mid 30s!

 

GN might work best since you mentioned poker. Hardly any walk to the poker tables there and across the street at Binions. For football, I enjoy watching it at the Plaza. TVs are huge, sportsbook is right there and you and even play VP at the bar without missing any action.

I can't tell you about the rye mannhattan since I don't drink, but Vato cigars in Binions has the finest cigars around...their own brand. If you like a maduro, their aloha line is sublime. A lot of people talk about Chicago Brewing inside 4Q as a nice lounge to enjoy a cigar. I don't really know, I usually just smoke at the VP bartops.

 

We are staying downtown for 2 nights at the tail end of our December trip. After reading reviews, watching videos & some helpful advice from VMBers, we have decided to stay in a golden gate suite. For the price, we feel it's a great value for a suite.
As far as Sunday football viewing, I am considering taking the free shuttle to SAMs town. Have heard nothing but great things about their sports book.
FXT's suggestion of the plaza's book is an option I haven't considered. Being able to play vp while watching the games would definitely interest me.
Can you see every screen to watch all the games from the vp bar??

 

My only experience staying downtown is at the Golden Nugget. Gold room --- Basic, nothing special. Rush Tower --- very nice rooms and bigger. Nice bathroom, but you will pay a premium compared to other places to stay downtown. But its the closest thing you are gonna get to the quality of a room on the strip. (I know GN wasn't one of the choices, but that's the only info I have on rooms).

Poker.... GN poker room is always fun. / Binions poker room was just sad the last time I as there. Not the same poker room from a few years ago.
Sportsbook -- Does it really matter downtown? You can run to any casino quick enough and throw a bet in.
Football games- I've watched games at the bar just outside the sportsbook at GN. Drinks are pretty quick and VP when you are bored.
Chicago brew Company at 4Queens was fun for football. Food was pretty good. VP at the bar, and I think they had a lounge style area. Plus I believe you can smoke in there even though it is a restaurant.

 

I usually stay at the D and the accommodations are fine for me. If I was taking the better half I think i'd spring for something else, such as the GG Suite. I haven't stayed in a suite at the D...

The thing I love about downtown is the location of the hotel isn't really important in relation to (some of ) the activities you have mentioned. GG may not have a sportsbook, but within 5 minutes you can find one.
Poker? again, no problem.
find the hotel you want to stay in and the other things are easy to find. personally I'd choose GG suite if I was w/ the wifey.

I second Vato's. I usually enjoyed a smoke in Benny's Bullpen but they recently changed the name and apparently cigars are no longer allowed, so I'm going to try Chicago Brewing inside 4Q next trip.
as for football watching, I like the Longbar at theD and I believe binions recently added lots of seating near the sportsbook (nice couches and such that used to be in Benny's ). Havent seen it in person, but saw some pics on FB.

 

If you plan on playing VP at the bar at Chicago brewing Co, make sure you ask what drinks are comped. Me and my buddy were drinking glenfiddich on the rocks before we ate and they said that they didn't comp anything more expensive than Dewers. Wasn't a big deal b/c at the time they were doing the promo where they matched the bill with freeplay, but it would have been nice having a heads up before we each got a tab for $50 just for the drinks plus our dinner.

With the wife? I'd also go for the GG suite...I've never stayed in one, but the on-line pics I've seen suggest that they're quite nice.

From there, you're 90-seconds from the sportsbook at the Plaza...and it's quite nice.

 

I would stick with the Golden Gate Suite. These are fun suites as you mention, comfortable with a huge TV. I always love staying in them. Downtown is so accessible, it doesn't matter where you stay, you can walk anywhere. In my 14 years of living here in Las Vegas, my favorite for gambling is still Binions. I just feel like I can win there. But I love the new Downtown Grand as well, definitely check it out. The EL CORTEZ is also a great place to gamble -- but it is still rather "rugged" meaning there are all sorts of types there (and some not so good). Of course, the nicest place to gamble is the Golden Nugget -- but they comp so terribly. For eating, the nice places are Triple George (next to Downtown Grand and part of Downtown Grand), Pizza Rock (doesn't look like much outside, but I love the place -- check it out), and Oscars (fine dining at the Plaza), plus my old favorite Binion's Steak House on top of Binions. Then you also have Hugo's Cellar bottom of Four Queens. Those are my favorites!!!

 

I agree with Chicago Brew Co., also great for watching football and playing VP with good paytables. Lovo Cigars in Neonopolis have great smokes, reasonably priced.

I'm a big 4Q fan in general. Also had good luck at the D. GN, not so much. It's pretty, but I've never done much there.

The Sports Book bar at the Plaza isn't real good regarding the main TV's. It has a few of its own you can watch and although nearby it's not really situated to see all of them in the Book. Its off to the side and not in the middle of the Book, which would be cool.

William Hill runs the Book and they have those big blue comfy seats for the low and high top tables.

 

Alright boys and girls, I've pulled the trigger on the suite at the GG for 4 nights. Thanks for all the replies thus far.

Couple more questions:

Spa day/half day for the wife at the GN or?????

I play between $25-$50 a hand at BJ. Normally between 3-4 hours a day. I know its kinda low roller but {and i know nothing about this} will i stand a chance of getting any comps at the GG with that level of play?

Just spent an hour arguing with my brother over the phone on why DT is better that the strip. F that guy.

 

for the spa, I never go but my buddy's wife went to the one at GN and enjoyed it. Plus look at it this way. If you send her anywhere else its gonna be the same price at best... plus you gotta pay $40-70 in cabs round trip. I say save the money..... but then again I'm not married..... so don't listen to me....lol

I think $25-50 a hand blackjack will get you at least some food and possibly a night or 2 comp'd depending on the length of your sessions. After all doesn't the high limit room at GG start at $25 a hand.... you may be a higher roller there than you think.

 

Play the 50 table in their high limit salon. It's 2deck, 3-2, H17, DAS permited. Can almost guarantee you'll earn plenty of comps doing that at GG.

 

I think your going to have trouble finding a rye manhattan in most of the casinos. I'm an old fashioned guy prefer rye but will do bourbon. Just getting a bourbon old fashioned at most casino bars is hard.

The only place that I can think of for a rye manhattan is the bar at triple George grill. They have a bar which I think might be the old mob bar that makes excellent drinks and you can smoke. Bartenders are really nice and a step up from casino bartenders.

For sportsbooks assuming you can get a seat is the golden nugget. That being said unless your only making one or two $20 bets you should shop lines.

If you can get over the seedy characters at the book El Cortez is actually kind of nice. Also the parlor bar there makes some good drinks and I believe has some rye. The downtown grand is small but has a nice setup. You have several different books in the area.

Fremont, California are Coast Casinos
El Cortez is with Stations casinos

I recommend making GN your home base and shopping lines through vegas insider on your smart phone and running across the street if you see a better line elsewhere.

yes. IMO GG is very good to their players, and 25/50 per hand should earn you some comps, esp if you're playing in the high limit pit (because you will be guaranteed to be rated at 25+).
