Do many people make this bet? I was at a table the other day and everyone was betting it except me so of course I was dealt a three card flush. I always considered this to be a sucker bet but maybe it can win you something when your basic hand sucks.

That was the only bet I ever won on, at LIR.
At one of the local Indian casinos, it pays 4 for a straight, rather than the usual 3, so that's the only place I'd play it..
I actually hit trips and straight-flush's frequently on that bet. (hit AKQs for a 50:1 "Mini Royal" payout also)
Best i EVER got was a fullhouse, ONCE, and i played a LOT of LIR.

A 3-card straight usually pays 6-1. A flush at most places pays 3-1.

During one of my trips I wanted to change it up a bit and play LIR. Bought in for 100 and did not play the side bet, the dealer in Bills kept asking me if I was going to make the bet I said no and he got real pissy. I said it was a pure sucker bet. Then one hand I decided to make the bet just to piss him off more and hit a straight flush. After he paid off the bet I cashed and walked away. The only time I play these games anymore is to break away from my slot and VP play.

I never play it when it's offered. It's offered in so many games now. Miss Stud, BJ(21+3), LIR all have it, so it must be a big advantage for the house. If I want to play it, I'll play 3 card poker. And now many places offer the 5 or 6 card mega bonus progressive. They have you putting all this extra money in addition to the actual game you are playing. It drives you mad, you don't want to bet it, but you don't want to get caught with your pants down and hit a great hand and not have the bonus bet.

Being an anal engineer type, I tend to go with the better percentage plays; but ever since missing out on a $5000 for $1 payoff for three suited 7's in Tunica many years ago, I tend to make those "sucker" bonus bets. It's like this. Would you feel worse losing an extra $1 on every hand (worse case) or possibly missing out on a big payoff?

Not too long ago at the Gold Coast, the dealer announced in a rather sad tone that he had a flush. Ms. Gecko, smiling from ear-to-ear having played the bonus, put down her straight flush! Same with my $1000-1 and her $200-1 payoff at BJ's Lucky Ladies. Yep, the odds are pretty poor, but there's an emotional element that goes beyond the arithmetic!

I really like 3 card poker so I usually play this one. I know the odds aren't good but LIR can go on for a long time w/o a win so this adds a bit more excitement to the game for me. Hit a straight flush on this more than once too.

I don't play LIR much, but when I do, I play the 3 card bonus. It is the only way I have ever been able to make any money on LIR.

I played LIR at my local this past weekend, played the three card bonus and hit a J-K-Q diamonds straight flush at 50-1 for $500 and hit a couple of straights at 6-1 for $60 each. I left the table up $424 on a $201 buy-in. (Needed that last dollar for the bonus bet without breaking a nickel)

I will add that my local casinos (Seminole in FL) have the best pay table for the three card bonus I have seen (100-1 Mini Royal; 50-1 Straight Flush: 30-1 3OAK; 6-1 Straight; 3-1 Flush; 1-1 PP) with a house advantage of 4.2% (according to www.wizardofodds.com), which is not great, but not terrible.

The way I look at it, is that I don't gamble to grind out a small profit, I am playing for entertainment and a chance at a big payout and the price you pay for the big payout is longer odds.

I used to play Ultimate Texas Hold 'em at Green Valley Ranch, just playing the Trips bet. Then after 2 years, one dealer decided it wasn't allowed, made a big stink with the Pit Boss, and they decided I could not do that (just play the Trips bonus spot for $5). So I have rarely returned to Green Valley since then, and never played Ultimate Texas Hold'em there again.

Earlier in August, at Boulder Station (owned by Station Casinos, just like Green Valley Ranch), I sat down at the Ultimate Texas Hold'em table because one of the dealers I like there was dealing that game at the time; the only other player at the table was playing $5 on the Trips bet and $1 on the Progressive and nothing else. After he left, I called over the Pit Boss, and asked if I could just play those two bets there without playing against the dealer & he said yes. The dealer also chimed in that he had asked in the past with someone higher up in the pit about that and they agreed that a player could play just the Trips or just Trips and Progressive. The Pit Boss' explanation was, why wouldn't we let you just play the sucker bets? They have the highest returns to the casino. Just like you can only play the Pairs Plus bet at Three Card Poker if you want.

My feeling is, by just playing the sucker bets it makes your bankroll last a lot longer, giving you the chance to hit something good on a bonus bet.

I know that's your feeling, but it just can't be true.

My wife and I play LIR fairly often. We don't do the bonus bet(s). Some trips we miss out on a straight flush or two, but definitely we have come out ahead by not playing the bonuses. LIR by itself has a fairly low house edge and you can (usually) play a long time on $100. And there is still the chance for a big payout, even without playing the bonuses.

This was my thinking this past trip. Looking back, I probably should have played longer as I only won one hand in 11 tries, but had the bankroll to hang in there for the chance of hitting that big one. I was playing twice the table minimum while all others were playing lower wagers. Maybe my black jack time/play influenced me adversely.

On those rare occasions when I play LIR, I do the 3-card bonus bet.
Main reason? In that game, I seem to get a lot of pairs that are 2s through 9s!
Without the bonus bet, those are usually losers. This way, I end up pushing those hands.

    ...oh, and yeah - I know that it's a sucker-bet.

When I play let it ride/3cp at the CET casinos, I play all the possible bets including the 6 card millionaire maker. Yes it gets real expensive (by my standards) especially when they raise the minimum to $10/$15. But when or if you hit that big one......the pay offs are unbelievable and if that 6 card diamond RF is hit .......an immediate life changer! I know the naysayers here will recite the high odds of that happening but hey, it just hit a few weeks ago at PHO. Just saying...
