saying bah bye to A.C.

I am taking a bah bye trip to AC most likely Mon Aug4.
With Revel, Showboat, Trump Plaza shutting down; and Hilton gone, I just dont see AC having a future.

I liked SB, good buffet, nice casino; Plaza I didnt care for and saw no need for it, just as Claridge, Wild Wild West, Hilton, and Revel.
I'll just walk around Revel, take some last shots, have a good laugh at how not to run a "resort".

With only Caesar's, Taj, Bally's, Resorts, Trop and the Marina casinos it's not worth it the 3 hr drive there. However, some might claim getting rid of the excess baggage is good for AC, all I see is bad news.

I'd rather either go to Resorts in Queens, or book a cheap flight to Vegas, or play a NY Lottery game... lucky me I won $240 on 4-spot QD.

 

I'm also in NYC, I haven't been to AC since I sold my car. Borgata is great for poker but for a multi-day trip it would get claustrophobic. My problem with Resorts is no real games. There's no table games and the VP is slots.

 

Just to clarify for others Resorts is in Atlantic City. It has both table games and VP. Resorts World is the slot parlor in Queens. The properties are in no way connected.

 

I have never gotten in the water at AC but they need to turn it partly into a summer beach destination, at least they would get 3 months of heavy traffic and some folks would even gamble at the few remaining resorts.

 

Get yer butts back down here,thats an order! Seriously,I drive into the city often,I know what it costs. Thankfully somebody else is paying ,but to drive from the outer boroughs or LI to AC and back costs a pretty penny these days and traffic can be a horror but I still think you guys will be back.

 

It already does get some heavy summer traffic but there could be more. But it's lots of families that park in the casino garages, hit the beach, and then go home.

 

Yea AC is more crowded during the summer as opposed to the winter but what I am talking about is the real estate that will vacated as the casinos close.

 

AC isn't going anywhere. The nice, well-run casinos -- Borgata, Golden Nuggett, Harrah's Caesars and Tropicana -- are always packed, especially from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Those places make tons of money. If you give people a nice property, a good experience, and some value, they will come.

 

I agree with Mike. There is something brewing down there, it may take some time but I think good things are going to happen once these extra casinos are closed and/or restructured.

For example, they are experimenting with different crowd draws like the two free concerts they held this past week on the beach. Blake Shelton on Thursday and Lady Antebellum on Sunday. Both were jam packed. And coming up on August 13th is "Thunder Over the Boardwalk" the annual AC Air Show featuring the Thunderbirds. This always packs them in.

On top of that there is a new mayor with new ideas, who it seems is not beholding to the old political machine. So we'll see what that brings.

 

And, there's no chance Revel closes. Absolutely none. Revel will be bought on the cheap and turned around. I'm betting it will be one of the more popular casinos in AC in the near future.

 

I don't see Revel closing either. Borgata, Harrahs, Golden Nugget are all beautiful resorts.

And as far as going to Queens? Really? Resorts world is 1 hour from me and AC is 3.5 hours, AND I HAVE TO PASS RIGHT IN FRONT OF RESORTS WORLD, and I won't stop there. It's NYS lottery terminals, not class "C", a huge rip off, plus the clientele is not the types I like to hang out with (day trippers, welfare recipients, troubled or uncleanly types, self talkers, etc), the place is already dirty, no need to get dressed up for any reason, and I can give you a half a dozen other reasons. There are no rooms, no entertainment, no resort and it's what I'm looking for. To each their own I guess.

AC will still be around, why?, for people like me who want that whole experience.

 

I hope you are right, it really is the most beautiful property in AC by a wide margin. It's the "Aria/Cosmo" of AC. I would gladly go back if it's bought by someone who knows what they're doing and they put in some decent VP offerings!

 

I actually haven't been to the property but from what I understand it's a nice resort but they tried to cheapen it up while still pumping as high-end luxury. That's just what I hear.

I really don't see MGM, CET, or Wynn making an investment in AC at this point. Especially Wynn... IIRC, I don't think he's bought into a casino since the Golden Nugget in Vegas in the early 70s... he builds them from scratch with his own personal touches on them. I don't see him trying to reinvent someone else's mistake at this point in his career.

This is more of an Asian investment if you ask me. Get it on the cheap and put some Asian touches on it and get the Asian business crowd that's visiting NYC to come down for the weekend and play big.

 

They tried to cheapen it later on as one of their hail mary plays to pump up business. They had huge signs and billboards advertising cheap meal deals and things like that, I don't remember the details but along the lines of "99 cent hot dogs" and "$3.99 breakfast specials" type of things. I think it was a poor response to certain criticisms that didn't really reflect what was wrong with the property but were instead symptoms of what was wrong. There was criticism that they were too high-end for AC, which personally I think is silly. AC isn't in the middle of the boonies, it is surrounded by some of the richest metros in the country and can handle high end. But in my opinion the place just felt unwelcoming, contrast it to a place like the Borgata that just makes you feel good upon entering. Almost like the feeling you get when walking into Wynn or Bellagio.

I also think they handled their launch poorly and it can probably serve as a case study about bad public relations. When they opened they practically flipped their middle finger at the entire market and suggested they were too good for you. It was a snobby first impression and they ended up paying for their hubris. Plus, while I think the place is very nice in some ways, it just feels very cold and steely too me. But maybe I'm just not hip enough.

 

I guess i'm like a lot of people,waiting to see what happens next. My opinion,is that they should have built Revel between Borgata and Harrahs instead of on the boardwalk. I'm waiting to see what the gambling figures are for this summer vs last . Vegas had it's down years during the recession also and it's share of failures . Pinnacle bought the Sands and knocked it down and was all ready to build and poof ,it owns a vacant lot ,MGM was going to build at the Marina and that fell thru. We're going to the GN tomorrow and if my buddy (30 yrs. working there,and his Mrs . on the boardwalk many years) is there I 'll see what he has to say.

 

I am with you 100%! No way it closes with that many jobs lost and money lost with the local govt behind it. I think bidding closed yesterday but companies asked for an extension.

I've never played there ( loyal to borgata, ballys and golden nugget). Waiting to see what happens.
