OK! The last two times I've played blackjack at my local casino, I've sat down at a table with a player that was completely inebriated. One was a man the other was a woman, both were probably mid to late 50s and betting significantly more than the table minimums ($25). They were the type of drunk where speech is slurred, fumbling with their chips, slow to make decisions, seemed to generally know basic strategy, but would make bad plays on a hunch. They were not belligerent drunks, generally just having a good time.

I have mixed feelings about someone like this at my table, I enjoy the entertainment factor and will even make comments to them to mess with them. I also don't mind them slowing down play because I figure I will lose more slowly. On the other hand, if they are making terrible plays and I am losing, I can get frustrated and need to leave the table.

What is your thoughts on these type of players at the table? Have you ever been one of these players (that you can remember)? Do you know someone that becomes one of these players?

I have sat at BJ tables with a group of people who are playing perfect basic strategy and have lost my shirt, I've also played at tables where a person/group of people are making all the wrong decisions (standing on 15 vs dealer 10, hitting 12 against dealer 5 etc) and have won a shit-ton...My gut feeling is that as long as you are having a good time, it's a wash how others are playing...

Angry or stupid, 'falling-down' drunks are plague to any blackjack table.

But the type you're talking about? Nah... folks like that are a part of the 'vegas charm'.
I'm pretty certain that at some point (or multiple points :wink2: ) during every ttrip, I could be found at a table, playing 'impaired'. It's just the nature of that environment.

But playing 'basic strategy' has become so automatic for me, I doubt I screw it up much (if at all), even when I am drunk.
(Oh, and the only "hunches" I play are on doubles against dealer ten or ace...depending on what I think the count may be, I may double when basic says I shouldn't. But that's technically not a 'wrong play', as much as it could be a 'wrong bet increase'. Obviously, I would still hit my 10 vs a dealer ace, even if I do not double.)

NOTE: Try to remember - whenever you're playing blackjack, regardless of the age or inebriation level of the other players - their play has an equal chance of helping you as it does hurting you, whether or not they are playing "correctly".

We all tend to remember the times when someone's "wrong play" cost us a hand. We tend to not remember when they save the table.

It matters a lot more to me in BJ than it does in other games. If you ruin the rest of the table with your drunken decision, that pisses me off. If I'm playing three card poker, Drunky Drunkerson has no impact on me, so go ahead and fold with three Aces if that's what you want to do.

The drunk thing only bothers me if
    (a) they're hindering the game to the point that it isn't fun (spilling drinks, not paying attention or signaling when it's their turn, constantly checking their phone and saying "hold on", etc)
    (b) blowing smoke practically in my face
    (c) constantly yelling in my ear or yelling obscene things across the casino to their drunk friend 2 tables over or
    (d) saying abusive things to other players or the dealer

Otherwise, as others point out, their actions are just as likely to help as to hurt you, so as long as you're having fun, roll with it.

Unfortunately, some of these people come back and try to sue the casino when they lose because they were too drunk to know what they were doing.

Long as they aren't too messy or any level of mean, no problem. The more attention a drunk receives, the less the house can watch the rest of us. Poor play is a wash, as others have said already. Won't help you or hurt you in the long run. Slow play helps the players, not the house.

I'll take a happy drunk over someone chain smoking two inches from my face seven days a week. Now, there is a point that it gets bad. I know the last trip I was at I came down in the morning to a $25 table, and there was a guy still there from the night before playing two hands at ~$150. He was drinking straight whiskey, and was in pretty rough shape. He was having a hard time getting his bets out, and appeared to be making mistakes he shouldn't have been making. After about 20-25 minutes of small talking with the guy, I said something along the lines of, " I think you might be making mistakes due to whiskey, and come find me after a nap." He listened to me, colored up with about 2k left and went to his room. Found out after from the dealer that he had started with just a grand, and had been up close to $20k at one point that night. Too bad no one convinced him to go to bed when he still would have had a nice win.

As far as people making mistakes--don't sweat it. Statistically speaking, what the other players do cannot affect your odds in any meaningful way. The number one thing you can do to make yourself a better blackjack player is stop trying to think about what would have or could have happened on a given hand after the fact and just play the way the smart math guys say you should play.

It's more rare that I am sober while gambling than inebriated. As long as people don't "ruin" the games for others, I have no issues with drunks at the tables.

    That was Me!

Not only that, I woke up in a suite in the RIO with a pocket full of green and black chips but have no recollection of how I got there.

Man I love that town! They told me I had a great time!

Agreed with those who said the types of drunkards in the original post add to the Vegas charm. I also echo that as long as they are not belligerent, rude or mean then I am cool with it. Hell...I (and many of us here) are those laid back drunks who tie one on and have a good time.

If a drinker is obnoxious, I'll probably move to another table. If a player is that way without drinking, I'll move at the end of that shoe or sooner. If he is drinking and not thinking or acting correctly, I'll just feel sorry for him and go about my game. I'm not very proud of myself when I get that way either. This is the way most alcoholics start out and almost all eventually will have blackouts.

Totally agree ... happy drunk is a okay even fun but obnoxious or grumpy or damn near blacking out not fun!!! .... I will say I can get quite inebriated and still play bs on auto pilot. My only issue that I think I might have in Vegas is tables / casinos with different rules .... I don't have at my usual haunts!

As an Eagle fan I know his story well. I also know that he tried to move my team to Phoenix. I never liked him because of that.

I agree with this. People tend to remember the bad plays that cost them the hand but forget the bad plays that make their hand.

Those who are bothered by drunks should go to a high limit table, where they won't have to worry about the riffraff.

I have had a lot of fun playing at tables with drunk people.
