I'll be at the Cosmo too for the Belmont. I have never bet horses but will then.

    Cheers UK

got bet big to win big if you want Chrome...

Hoping to hit an exacta-key or tri-key w chrome on top with a "bomber" (as we call longshots) underneath...maybe even a back wheel all-chrome exacta...???

Anyone thinking Chrome can't do it...awful long stretch in New York...if Espinoza feels challenged in the clubhouse turn again and pushes early we may see place or show...its not Baltimore's short track....doubt He's out of the money, but what's your take?

Any take on "Possum" as a challenger...?

I did the Chrome/ALL and ALL/Chrome exacta on the derby. $72 cost, $340 payout. I didn't bother doing the same for the Preakness. With only 10 horses, there wasn't a lot of value in the exacta. I did end up placing $149 in trifecta wheels, and they all hit, but only paid $152!

I think Chrome has a better chance than any, but there are so many opportunities for something to keep him out of first place. He'll definitely be a big part of my wheels.

I really want California Chrome to win, but, I will not be betting him. In horse racing I prefer to play claiming type horses and not the big races. Chrome will not offer any value whatsoever. My heart will be with him but not my money. I need more betting value for my money bets than he will offer.

A triple crown winner will help horse racing big time and we need it. Good luck to Calif. Chrome.

Agree with Don. No value betting Chrome. Hope he wins. Would love to see another triple crown winner.

I have only made a few little bets on horses in the past for fun, but my host is putting something together for us to watch and bet on it. So screw it, CC here I come!

You have two big problems betting Chrome. One is that he's going to be the favorite to win, which means the payout won't be great. But second, and more importantly, everyone and their mother is going to want a betting slip that has a Triple Crown winner on it. This happens every time a horse wins the Derby and the Preakness -- you have a huge rush of people tossing down $2 for what amounts to a souvenir, and then the pari-mutuel system means that it throws off the odds mightily. I like betting horses occasionally, but there's no way I'd put money on California Chrome in the Belmont if I was trying to make any sort of profit.

EDIT: To put it in context, I did a quick search; Big Brown opened at 2/7 in 2008, and Smarty Jones opened at 2/5 in 2004. I'm sure things got much worse by post time.

    Belmont

    A little Belmont trivia here.

    1. No horse has won the Belmont without a prior race over the Belmont strip.

    2. Horses that close out of the clouds at the Derby are generally up the track at the Belmont.

    3. Tactical speed is of the essence at the Belmont. (Chrome has tactical speed).

    4. Sounds nuts but true. I'm rooting for Chrome, but at the same time I'm trying to sweep the Triple Crown Trifectas. This would be a first for me.

Good luck to all. AL C.

I really like the connections to this horse and thought CC improved in the Preakness. OTOH, a few horses are better suited to the 1 1/2 mile distance, California Chrome is the beneficiary of a somewhat weak 3 year old class, and only had the second best 3 year old performance on Derby weekend.

Far better horses failed The Test of the Champion after winning the KD and PS, including horses I watched such as Spectacular Bid, Alysheba, Sunday Silence, Real Quiet and War Emblem.

It would be good for racing and I'll have some place in my heart rooting for CC, but my money will likely be on Wicked Strong, who had a poor trip in the Derby and should be well rested for the Belmont Stakes, and I'd bet the No Prop bet on whether CC will win the Triple Crown (Yes -120, No -100).

Absolutely agree! But since I plan to bet $10 on the race, why not bet CC. The free drinks I get would cost more than that, lol

You might want to think about adding $2 more and doing a $12 trifecta box; you're of course less likely to win, but if you do hit that there's at least some decent money to be made. Otherwise you're going to be betting $10 to win a couple bucks at most.

The effect souvenir win tickets have on the win pool is overblown. A Triple Crown winner isn't going to save this game. A temporary bit of good spin and that's about it. The problems facing this industry will not be significantly helped by California Chrome being in the winners circle at Belmont.

DonD makes a valid point about racing in general. The states have taxed racing to death, increasing take outs thus reducing payouts to players. In Penna. the trifecta takeout is 25 %. That 's a quarter of the pool. I think Florida is even higher. Those are worse than slot machine and Keno odds. I'm a long time racing fan. I'm glad to see .50 cent trifectas etc. One good point about lower base wagers is the elimination of numerous W-2 G's, with windfall payouts. You don't sign in a casino until $ 1,200.00, at the track it's $ 600.00 on a wager paying 300-1 or better. Nice to win but who wants to keep two sets of books for the IRS? Life is tough enough.

Citing a TVG piece from Saturday's races. Seems strange to me also. I apologize if incorrect. I'm kind of researching the issue myself. I seem to remember a PA. bred shipping up in the 80'sa and winning. I believe Temperance Hill in 1980 may not have raced over the Belmont Strip.
