Random question but since I haven't been to Vegas in 5 years I can't remember if they allow it..

Do taxi's allow you to take an open beer in the taxi? I ask because I'm thinking of grabbing one at the airport to the hotel (that is if there is a convenient store that sells beer at the McCarren arrivals).

It would just be nice to have a drink while driving to the hotel on my boyfriend's first trip to Vegas, and to be able to have one when we arrive in the room to drop our stuff before we go down to start gambling and exploring.

No, I am not a lush. Lol

I don't know about getting one at the airport, but for any casino I actually get a beer to take with me if I know I am in for along ride. Never had a problem with it. Get BFTC! (beer for the cab).

People may do it but be advised that it is illegal! Same goes for the open container law that only applies on the strip and freemont street, anywhere else you can expect a ticket.

There actually is a liquor store right in the baggage claim area.

I am uncertain whether they sell beer singles.

Most interesting post! It sounds like an "appropriately" purchased drink is fine under the FSE canopy, but what about walking with one in the Fremont East Entertainment District? I've usually carried a drink in a plastic cup going between the FSE and El Cortez. Not that I'm likely to be busted, but is that legal? As usual, there seems to be as many exceptions as rules and more than enough confusion.

Turtleman - interesting question, because during my last visit to downtown, I visited container park near closing time, and had bought a 11% beer at one of the bars. As we were getting shoo'ed out of the park, the security guard told us we couldn't leave the park with our drinks, and that we had to finish them. I got stuck slamming this expensive strong beer, didn't have much of a chance to enjoy it.

IIRC, none of the bars on east fremont let you leave with drinks either, I think....Can't remember though, usually too blasted. Weird though, because you can certainly leave El Cortez with a drink, and its farther down than some of those bars.

I know that we have carried beer bottles onto the Monorail several times and never been stopped or confronted about it.

Technically illegal on E Fremont, but not very enforced. Also illegal to buy a drink at the convenience stores and consume it anywhere on Fremont. Next month take a look and you'll see ABC and all the other stores have signs about this in their windows.
Again, how do you enforce it? It is legal to buy it at any casino bar and go outside.

They do, we've bought them in the past. I think they sell the big ones, either 16 or 24 oz cans.

Liquor Library is the name of the package store.

I remember coming down an escalator to baggage claim, and it was on my right.

The strip and DT are totally different as far as the law goes. The strip falls in the unincorporated part of Clark Co. The DT falls under the jurisdiction and law of the City of Las Vegas.

Thus is why there has been all the debate the last year or so around Fremont. The City/Police have chosen to loosely enforce the law over the years and only use the strength of statute when they believe the situation warrants. This has caused considerable confusion of course.

I am in the group of thinking this won't be allowed: The Strip and Downtown are designated "entertainment districts" which is why you are allowed to drink in public - special regulations have been passed by the city and county to allow it. But go a few blocks off The Strip to a park or a shopping center or something and sitting there drinking in public will get you a ticket.

That said, while this might seem like a nice idea I don't think it would pan out that way: at the airport you'll be carrying your bags or wheeling your luggage behind you, stop at the liquor store and get a couple of drinks and then out to the taxi line.

At that point if you crack your drinks open you'll be carrying or dragging all your stuff while trying to drink and work your way through the taxi line... then putting your stuff in the trunk and getting in the cab keeping your drink safe... then at the hotel getting out of the cab... digging out cab fare while getting your stuff from the driveway after the driver unloads it... carrying your drinks to the front desk while carrying or dragging your luggage behind you...

Just seems like it will be more of a pain in the ass to worry about the drinks and moving all your stuff unless you are going to chug back the drinks, but then whats the point: that is chugging back a drink, not enjoying it - just seems like so much hustle and bustle at the airport to enjoy a drink and a cab ride that is usually to short to fully consume a beverage on the way to hotel if you decide to wait until you are in the cab.

Instead if you want to start off with a drink I'd be thinking of either hitting one of the bars at the airport first and sitting down and having a drink or get a couple of shots if you want to start things off with a buzz.

Or you might look at getting a limo. It'll probably cost you $30-40 more but then you get the limo for an hour so you'll have time for a drink or two and can take your boyfriend for a tour up and down The Strip while you enjoy.

Ya I had a beer everytime I rode the monorail. I don't remember even seeing anyone around that would even care.

You make looks of great points. We will be gambling as soon as we settle in to the room and go downstairs at which point we will get comped drinks, I just know I will be excited in the room and will want to toast him at least at that point but I don't want to pay $10 for a drink at one of the bars just to be able to do that when we will get them for free (we will tip of course) a few minutes later. Lol, I over think things sometimes. It's not that big of a deal, we can wait but we could always buy a beer each at the airport and take them with us and crack them in the room. That might work!

Get a limo. It's his first trip, this will make it extra special.

I suggest two options, and you might even combine them:
The limo will have champagne. My Lady doesn't like it too much so I got some orange juice from the airport for mimosas.
Have the limo take you to Lee's Liquor. Get some room supplies. Including big cups because the bathroom glasses don't last to the bottom of the elevator.

I was watching "Vegas Strip" right now, and it reminded me of this thread. The cops put three obnoxious drunk guys in a cab WITH their beers in front of PHo. So, I guess they don't think its a huge deal.

And also, I guess THAT'S how you get a cab at the curb on the Strip.
