On this trip we will go downtown to Fremont St and probably to Rio.
We may try Ellis Island as well for a meal.
Are there any others we should try out or just stick to that?
I dont know where a lot of these places are so thought we maybe should stick to a place that has easy transportation so we can't get lost. We are 2 ladies travelling alone

If you make your way to RIO, Gold Coast is next door and the Plams is across the street. Each Of them are certainly worth a visit when your in the neighborhood.

You can catch the WAX bus outside NYNY and ride that downtown for $2. You can also stay on it and go to Suncoast. The bus is an express so it makes limited stops.

We like Suncoast, but really no different than Orleans, or Gold Coast.

You didn't say where you are staying, but once downtown, you can also take the free shuttle from the Cal out to Sam's Town. From there, another free shuttle to the Strip. I like Sam's and especially the outdoor atrium for a place to just sit and relax.

Downtown is a great base with plenty to do and see. You have east access to the strip with the SDX bus. $8 for a 24 hour pass. This pass is also good on any bus route.

While on the strip you should go into the Bellagio and see the Conservatory. This is always a must do for me. You can easily incorporate this into your visit to Ellis Island. Catch the free shuttle from Bally's to the Rio before or after Ellis Island.

There are too many things to list but visits the the high end properties like the Wynn/Encore and the Venetian/Palazzo are worth while.

Gawking is free and I consider it time off the gambling clock.

Rio/Gold Coast/Palms is a nice trio if you want to get off the strip. All have frequent shuttles to/from the strip as well. Ellis Island is a good place, worth the short walk from Bally's. . I used to love walking down Flamingo to Maxim, Bourbon Street, La Mirage (all gone) and the Continental. (now Silver Sevens). Sams Town has a shuttle service to/from Downtown and Harrahs. I remember going to a place called The Reserve in the late 90's, it had a cool jungle theme but it was sold a couple years after it opened and is now Firsta Henderson.

In my experience unless you are strictly looking for good gaming odds off-strip locals casinos aren't worth your time. People go to locals casinos to gamble. That's about it.

The local casinos don't have the annoying tourists, you can find different restaurants that aren't on the strip or DT and their inflated prices, and often you can find a few different attractions to see. And yes the gambling odds are usually much better. I also like checking out the different neighborhoods around Vegas. I always like to check out the local casinos, like the M mentioned above which truly is beautiful, south point, Red Rock, and I think next month when I visit I'll go check out alliante for the first time (and probably GVR also)....

I understand that some people hate the strip and DT, but most people come for that madness. I think it's important to level set expectations. For better or worse locals casinos are a snoozefest, but are good for pure gaming.

LOVE the Rio! Check out the Carnival Buffet! Walk to the Gold Coast for the Ping Pang Pong-best Chinese food. At the Coast, you can take the shuttle to the Orleans, another great buffet and TGIFridays. There is always the free shuttle from Bally's to Sam's Town for another casino choice.
But be sure to spend some time at the Rio!!!

Is palms, Gold Coast and Orleans considered locals casinos??? I know they definately have tourists but they also have a lot of locals. When palms opened it was suppose to be half locals and half tourists, locals during the day and then the tourists at night. Just wondering....

Yes. Gold Coast probably is more local of the three. Palms was seeking more tourist action but it's been trying to reestablish it's locals cred. But in the past, it was locals on the weekdays and tourists on the weekend.

Yes it is closed . Lot of people disappointed. BUT .... I think it is worth a trip to Rio to check out the Voodoo Lounge for a great view of Las Vegas.

LOVE The M; also Green Valley Ranch; also RIO, and Sams Town every couple of years. We love to get away from the strip. Quieter, better gambling, cheaper drinks and great food.
