I'm sure this has been discussed in a variety of past threads, but let's face it, we've run out of ideas!

So, with the news that the new Riverboat Roulette variant will be debuting downtown, it occurred to me that there's always something new being conjured up in table gaming. Slots always have new themes and gimmicks, so why shouldn't table games?

First trip to Vegas: Jan. 1997. It seemed to me that I saw just about every casino advertising that it has "Spanish 21." I had good luck at that game more often than not. With the demise of the Spanish 21 table at the Fitz after it became the D, I doubt I'll ever play the game again. I think it was noted that the table could be found at one of the strip casinos, but I rarely visit the strip, and I'm not going to go out of my way to go to a strip casino just for that game.

Over the years I've seen more than a few variants of blackjack. (I just tried Blackjack Switch for the first time earlier this year, here in God's country. And I had beginner's luck!) Let It Ride and Three Card Poker have been around for years, but now we see several poker-themed games in the casinos. Craps has added the Fire Bet in recent years, and now a new betting variant is being added to roulette.

So what's your favorite game, variant or bet that is no longer around? Mine is clearly Spanish 21, even if it might still exist somewhere.

    Red Dog

    I miss Red Dog.

Simple game commonly known as in-between, acey-duecey or Chicago High-Low as well. Played it at low stakes in Canada about 15 or 20 years ago and haven't seen it since.

Fun carnival game wonder why casinos got rid of it as the house edge was around 3 percent. Probably since there isn't any chance for bonus bets where the casino has 20 percent house advantage.

Unless I am walking right by, I don't see Caribbean Stud Poker any longer...used to be a $5 game just about everywhere...not sure why I played...so glad I learned Blackjack...

I've never seen it in a casino, that I recall, but that reminded me of a couple of things I have seen in Vegas that I haven't seen in years:

A decade or more ago War was available in many casinos. I'm not sure I ever played it. It seemed like the type of game that would burn through your chips even faster than blackjack if you hit a cold streak. Don't recall seeing it in quite some time, although I don't look for it, either.

A true carnival game that I remember seeing at Riviera many moons ago, when people actually gambled there, is what I know as Chuck-a-luck. Haven't seen it there in eons, or anywhere else, ever, other than a church carnival when I was a youngster. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck-a-luck

Not so long ago the former O'sheas had a variant of Craps that was fashioned as a football-themed dice game. I remember glimpsing the table one Friday afternoon. Is that game around anywhere these days?

    sic-bo

Anywhere have sic bo with the three armed spinners and light up table? I used to play that from time to time. I guess the low stakes carnival games are dying out, I remember playing the Big 6 wheel at Tropicana in the late 90's and even it is getting harder to find, it's not really a game that lends itself to 25 dollar minimums.

I miss the Australian Two-up game that Main Street Station had in 1991 when Bob Snow owned the joint.

It was the Aussie coin flipping game put in an elaborate, ornate wooden pit. Players would take turns flipping two large coins on paddles in the middle of the pit while good looking female attendants ran the game, paid off and collected bets made by players spaced above and around the pit area. Lots of cheering and crowd participation.

Lots of fun - especially while drinking. The vibe was sort a cross between a craps table and a football game.

I've always wondered why this game never caught on. Heck! You can't even play it in Australia except for one day a year! I've always felt that two-up would make a terrific game for the younger, party set in Vegas if marketed the right way.

    Are you listening, Derek S.??

    Red Dog memories

I remember playing Red-dog at Slots O Fun (next to Circus Circus) back in the early 1990's. It was hilarious at times...when the dealer pulled the pair...and the table would start...'woofing' for that 3rd match....to get the 11-1 odds payout. :)

and oh-man...Australian Two-up??? Really..that used to be available in Vegas? I remember hitting the Jupiter Casino on the Gold Coast, Queensland.. back in 1988, and seeing that game... and WHAT A HOOT!!!! What fun drinking some XXXX beer with a bunch of Aussies hooting and hollering over a coin toss. :)

Texas Shootout. Hooters was the last bastion for it in Vegas, and I think the table has been gone a couple years at this point. I still see it in my midwest travels, but the game has mostly gone by the wayside. Its a shame because it was a lot of fun for the table. Not so much fun for the dealer, as it was one of the most confusing games to learn, considering I doubt any dealer would ever be able to memorize "the house way"

Good thread, I remember sic-bo and Red Dog, haven't seen them in years. I don't play roulette, I guess the new game is somewhat interesting, you can still play the "classic" bets if you want. I'm glad craps hasn't really changed much. Crapless craps never caught on. Fire Bet doesn't change the actual game in any way.

What I miss the most is the Lucky, Lucky sidebet at the double deck blackjack games at the Gold Coast. I don't play side bets, except for that one. It was really profitable.

i've seen a lot of sidebets over the years. i'm not recalling this one. how did it work?

in God's country our biggest casino has/had an over/under 13 bet. even-money payoff bet, if your first to cards are over or under 13, you win if you bet the correct spot. if your cards add up to 13, the house wins. aces always count as 1.

i didn't play it often, but if you knew an over 13 was coming, it was a good time to bet it. i haven't played much blackjack at that casino in recent years, so i can't tell you whether or not they still offer it, but i've never seen it offered in Vegas. seems like a bet that would be appealing to the card counter.

There's a special count that you have to employ on over/under 13, but it IS eminently countable and can be highly profitable. I saw the side bet once in Minnesota, but that was the only time for me.

The Rio offered this weird dice game, which IIRC was called Over the Wall, or something close. The roller would shoot a pair of dice three times, and you can wager whether the sum of the three totals would be under or over set counts (i.e. "The Wall"), with bonus bets and payouts for extreme numbers (i.e. 6/36).

I never seen this game at any other casino, and it was gone by the time I returned, but it was interesting to watch, and people were excited and yelling when they played.
