I have become a passive twitter follower in the last few months and follow a few people on this board as well as Aria, Wynn and Bellagio. This latest Aria tweet confuses me as to why they think this is a good thing.

The latest tweet is that they paid $117,000 in jackpots last week. By my math, if the average jackpot is $2500, then that means they only paid out 7 jackpots a day for the 7 days. Pretty pathetic if you ask me, but it does explain my pitiful gambling video poker and slot performance there on most trips.

Anyone else think this is nothing to brag about?

I agree with you, it seems low to me. It's been a while since I left Aria a winner even though I stay there several times a year. Of course last year I seldom left any Vegas casino a winner. :(

There's no way to know what they mean by jackpot. We probably assume they mean a hand pay, but technically, a jackpot should mean the highest possible payout given the amount bet.

On a one line quarter machine with a 1,600 coin max payout, a jackpot could be $400.

    On a $100 machine with a 500 coin max payout, $10,000 wouldn't be a jackpot.

Good points and something I hadn't considered......

Bragging about $117,000 in jackpots for a multi billion dollar complex is still pitiful.

Um, yeah. I remember seeing a billboard on I55 bragging that Isle of Capri Cape Girardeau having $13M in jackpots for the year. That's $250k a week. This boat is tiny compared to the ones in St. Louis, and St. Louis casinos are smaller than Aria. And I'm sure lower stakes are played in Missouri as well.

I think we have to be missing something. Very possible they screwed up the stat.

There is NO WAY that is what they hand paid in a week. If you've ever spent time in the HL slot room at your local you will realize theres no way in hell thats accurate. I'd go out on a limb and say thats not accurate even on a daily basis.

Maybe this boat is reporting every win on every slot machine as a 'jackpot'. Who knows...

It's like on the lottery TV show. "The Pick-3 numbers were 0, 5 and 7 and lottery players won over $157,000!!"

Translation: Lottery players wagered $314,000 and got $157,000 back.

I am not a slot player but my wife is.

Have you ever walked around and watched for hand pays at one of the MGM casinos? I have..there are not many payouts, relative to the size and amount of machines in the casinos.

I ask my wife the same questions and her answer is not many. In a total of 20 some odd days, I can recall 3. Not even, what one might consider huge...$1200 hand pays.

Walking through CET properties once of those 20 days I saw as many. Coincidence???? I don't think so.

The tweets about Aria payouts in a week, sounds accurate.

    Sad but true.

I can't imagine that it is accurate either, but that is what they tweeted. The previous week they tweeted that they paid out $174,000 in jackpots.

I did tweet back to them how pitiful that number was (with my math above) but never got a reply. Maybe social media people don't think the public understands math......

As a comparison, I was in the HL room of a local casino in Iowa a few days ago for around 3 hrs on a weekday during the middle of the day. There is probably 35 machines in the room, with $1 video slots and $5-10-25 denom reels. In those 3 hours I witnessed a minimum of 20k in handpays and that's just what I saw. I'm sure the actual amount was closer to 25k. There was probably less than a dozen people in there at once, it was by no means busy.

Taking this as an example, their numbers make ZERO sense. I just dont get it.

I had 6 hp from Aria over a wknd. Next visit 1 but it was almost as much as the 6.

My theory is that at Aria in particular, is that it's NOT very busy. I played a particular machine on a fri night and cashed out an odd amount (4.17$) and the next day I went to the the machine and mine was still the last payout on the machine. It's really not a busy casino IMHO

    Congratulations!!!

That is something that definitely didn't happen during any of my stays.

Can I ask, what slot machines did you cash in on?

When I went to see Zarkana on a Sat. night, it seemed pretty busy to me. I couldn't get on the 1 unit I wanted...lol

But unfortunately, NV doesn't give statistics on individual casinos. But here is the average amount returned to players as prizes in a week in a single casino that grosses $72M a year in gross revenue over all of 2013. The slots/video poker for this group of casinos have a 7.5% hold.

Doing all the math leads to $26,668,022 per week returned to customers as "winnings" for every large strip casino (23 casinos fit the >$72M gross revenue category).

So if 0.5% of all the prizes returned to patrons are > $1200 a whack, I guess it's believable ($133k at 0.5% for an average large strip casino). But I'm not sure if I believe that is the case, only 0.5% of winnings being W2G eligible seems low, especially at a nicer place like Aria. But maybe $117k is a low week.

    Older tweets:
    > $200k Feb. 26th
    $196k Feb. 12th

    But then again...Feb. 4th:
Wow! We had 24 slot jackpots last week, including a $60,000 hit on a 10 Play Video Poker machine! Will you hit the next #ARIAJackpot? (21+)

24 in a week? Really? That's low, imo. The damn casino has ~1940 machines!!!

What bugs me the most is the podunk casino in Cape Girardeau, MO, possibly averaged $250k/wk in jackpots (about 2.4% of total prizes returned in 2013). Considering the average gambler's behavior, I'm thinking the percentage is likely between 0.5% and 2.4% of the total prizes returned. Also Cape Girardeau had about 950 machines in 2013!!! Ironically, I spent one hour scoping this place out, and saw a $2000 W2G hit. Aces w/kicker on 50c 9/5 (97.02% max) Triple Double Bonus.

These numbers are generally fishy, imo. But I am more apt to believe Cape Girardeau's numbers.

Let me add some fuel to the fire......we keep really accurate statistics on our gambling and have for the past 15 years in anticipation of that IRS audit that we imagine is out there.

We both play $1 DDB and TDB with some $1 and $5 slots thrown in. Since Aria opened, we have split our play between Wynn and Aria with 33% of our trips to Aria and 67% of our trips to Wynncore. We have lost 25% more money at Aria than at Wynn......despite fewer trips. Keep in mind that this is a sample set since Aria opened and we have gone to Vegas 10 times per year.

Maybe their jackpot data is accurate after all......

Possibly...but you are playing DDB and TDB too, which is some swingy VP. If you said you had 97% return at Wynn and 92.5% return at Aria, I could believe that is still random luck. Depends on more detailed data.

I hold on with great faith that VP is all about the paytable because anything but a random standard poker deck is illegal. The paytables at Wynn and Aria are about the same, right?

Me either and I play there alot since I dont like crowds and they have a good assortment of machines. The weekend before i headed out to Vegas I payed a slot called Diamond Queen at one of my locals in Chicago. The bonus is hard to get, but you get 3 free spins with +1 full reel wild, then 2 and finally 3 full reels wild so it pays well.

At the locals I played for pennies, $1.00 a spin and had a bonus of $180.00. Switched to a nickle version, still for $1.00 a spin and hit for $350.00. Got the bonus at Aria playing for quarters, $5.00 per spin for just $150.00. I thought hand pay for sure, but not at Aria
