Mine have been minor, mostly in misunderstanding, or not knowing, gaming terminology when I first started playing table games (played slots the first couple of years in Vegas), The silliest one was the first time I heard a dealer say "check change". I thought he said "chump change" and was thinking "who are you calling a chump?". I didn't know the casinos called chips checks (I thing they use a French spelling of check).

One dealer told me a story of a woman who came to her table and saw an empty chair with a stack of chips at that spot and thought the casino had set them there in advance for her to use, no realizing that spot's player had made a restroom run, and didn't believe it when told.

I was playing BJ and a newbie got dealt Ace-8. He told the dealer that he wanted to split them. The dealer said that you can not split an Ace-8, but that you could double down on it if you want. The player in a Huff retorted that he read that you should always split Aces and Eights. I guess you had to be there, but the look on the dealers face was priceless......... :peace:

Not a blooper by me but my ex wife. It was our first Vegas trip as a couple and her first time ever. We were at the Stardust and the only game she had played so far was keno. I was at the craps table and she came over to me and said "that looks like fun. I think I'll try it." I gave her a handful of chips and just then the dealer moved the dice in front of her and asked her if she wanted to roll the dice. She said yes. Then she took a pair of the dice and sent them only about a foot. They called a no-roll and told her she had to throw them hard enough to bounce off the other end of the table. She wound up her arm and hurled the dice hard enough for both to hit a player standing at the end of the table. I sorta crept away from that table before she could get another toss.

On my very first trip I was very excited, needless to say. Having never gambled before, I approached a slot machine with much trepidation.

Dropped a twenty in, pressed the button twice, and the machine stopped and wouldn't work. I thought it was broken.

My friend came over and explained it was a 5 dollar machine at 10 dollars a spin.... I learned that lesson real fast!

During one of our first trips to Vegas my wife and I were strolling through MGM Grand and stopped to drop a nickel in a nickel slot machine. The nickel kept falling straight through and we kept reinserting it. Finally an old guy on the next machine pointed out is was a $5 machine. Duh.

I made the mistake one time of trying to cash in quarters with my son along, quickly got turned away by the cashier.

A couple time each year I observe someone trying to buy chips at a blackjack table with a Visa card.

Awesome!!! I've never seen this but I sure as hell can picture it happening. Just curious, did this happen in a HL room? :peace:

I did the exact same thing except it was in a main aisle in Mirage. Duh. :nono:

Not in a HL room. Most recently was this fall at MGM Grand. An Asian guy tossed a Visa card on the table and said "$300 please."

Whenever I see this, it's always a foreigner. Perhaps you can buy chips with a credit card outside the USA? I don't know.

Countless times I've seen newbs sit down at a penny slot and accidentally hit max bet on their first spin. Their reaction is priceless, especially the one time her "oh no!" very quickly turned into an "Oh my God" when she hit for $100+ on her first spin.

Also, any time a female shooter plays Craps for the first time, I fully expect the dice to either fly off the table, or barely make it past the sucker bets in the middle.

First time I played blackjack I was told to always always assume the dealer's hole card is a 10 and that I can double down for just 1 card.

So, with those 2 things in mind I always doubled when I assumed I could get away with (or bust) on just one card. Dealer 10, I've got 13? Yeah, double down.

I couldn't figure out why the dealer kept telling everyone I was "DOUBLING 13!" "DOUBLING 15!"

Luckily this was on a $2 table in Tahoe. IIRC, I did OK that session.

I ask a bartender at a VP bar at the Fitzgerald on our first trip 9 years ago if they served beer.

That reminds me of the time years ago, at the Marina, where a guy at a BJ table asked the CW if he could get a pitcher of beer.

I remember going to a table and giving the dealer a 20 and putting $5 in the circle, she looked annoyed and unkindly told me it was a $20 table, I had not seen the sign and assumed all the tables in that zone were $5.

As to the Visa card story, when dealing I was never given a credit card but I had someone try to buy chips with a tito

On our first trip to Vegas together, we stayed at the new MGM Grand. We rented a car (which proved to be a disaster). We really didn't know anything, like about valet parking, etc. So we hiked our luggage through the parking garage. We had already had a bad time trying to get the car (not enough shuttles, 2 hour wait in line) so by then we were pretty hot, sweaty and pissed.

Second mistake was trying to get to the Mirage to see Siegfried and Roy. We were not at all prepared for the traffic on the way and had barely allowed ourselves enough time to get there. It took us like 45 minutes.

My first trip to Vegas was in 1988 or 1989. I thought you were only allowed to gamble at the hotel you were staying at! What did I know?
I missed out on visiting all those old properties like The Sands, Dessert Inn and The Dunes etc... I did walk across the street to Caesars.
We stayed at The Flamingo and it was a real dump. I went with the wrong person and had a terrible time. I didn't go back for 18 years!

I doubled down on a Blackjack to the gasps of everyone at the table and drew a face card and won. Oh, yeah, I was on 3rd base. Riviera, 1977. During the next shuffle up, the dealer said "Just out of curiosity, did you know you had Blackjack?" I admitted that I didn't, all I saw was the 11.

hahaha! I've seen people do this before. There used to be an Asian fellow at our local casino that I used to see fairly often, He always doubled down on BlackJacks. The dealers all knew him and knew to expect it. The looks he'd receive were priceless.

My biggest gambling mistake had to be my habit of trying to collect my bet as soon as I won. I wouldn't wait for the dealer to pay off. I'd reach out and try to grab my chips or stack more chips on for the next hand. I got scolded quite a few times before I finally learned. Thankfully I was always caught before I brought too much trouble down on me. I'm not sure if security would buy the "I didn't know that adding chips to my stack AFTER I won the hand was frowned upon" excuse.
