I kind of laugh at how people dont understand at how much a Concert/event bring in for a weekend. EDC13 just shows you how many people like to party to EDM and all those vibrant colors.

I arrived on the Friday in 2011 and it was comical to see the reactions of the guests in the Palazzo.

Obviously they didn't expect to see girls walking around the place in bikinis and covered in illuminous paint :evillaugh

 

$132MM in visitor spend over 3 days among 345,000 people is $127 per visitor per day, not $405. His number is wrong by over 300%. How does this kind of stuff get past any halfway competent editor?

Then again, all the numbers are based on surveys conducted by Insomniac Events, the company that produces EDC, so the marketing aspect is probably more important for them than any accuracy.

 

I was in town for EDC weekend, it nearly shut down the cab service. We were staying at Sunset Station and cabbed into the strip, it was crazy.

I was surprised that a hotel like Venetian recognized the profitability and had the forethought of providing their own shuttle for their guests. It was an odd sight to see pasty fairies walking among the typical Venetian/Palazzo guests.

I really enjoyed the costumes!!

 

I worked in publishing for a few years (I wasn't a journalist but I am fully familiar with the sub-editing and editing process) and you'd be amazed at how many editors were either too busy or too lazy to actually proof half the stuff they got.

 

The article specified 345,000 attendees. This is the total attendance over 3 days, not single day attendance. Thus, the average daily amount would be $132M / (345000/3) = $383/day. At least that's closer!

However, this figure is also suspect. First, it's not clear if the article used $132M as the starting point, or the total economic impact of $278M. Second, while the festival is three days, the dollar figures may very well apply to what the article refers to as EDC Week -- a six or seven day period. Perhaps coincidentally, I can arrive at $405/day by:
(1) starting with the $278M figure.
(2) dividing by 6 days.
(3) dividing by the average attendance of 115,000/day.
(4) rounding to the nearest $5.
It's probably just a coincidence, though.

 

i havent done the math, and i dont care to. Tickets for EDC are nearly $100 a day. Add transportation, food, alcohol, drugs and hotel, i can see easily $400 a day. I know my bill would have been alot more than that. Helicopter in, helicopter out alcohol and food, i got free tickets but that was close $1000.

 

larryg makes a good point about how they probably arrive at that number, i.e. total daily attendance being about 100k instead of 300k+ and treating daily visitors as distinct visitors (e.g. not really 300k different people).

But here's a problem with it, and with this data coming from surveys conducted by the producers of the event. According to LVCVA the average TRIP expenditure of the Vegas visitor last year was about $800 and the average trip was 3.3 nights or 4.3 days. That means anywhere from $186 to $242 per day. That includes hotel, food, drink, shows, shopping, local transportation, and sightseeing. It does not include gambling, or of course airfare.

So do the EDC kids spend twice as much per day as the average visitor? Maybe they do, but I'm skeptical. Remember its an 18+ crowd and very very young on average. I was in Vegas during EDC this year and stayed at PH that weekend which was full of the EDC kids. They weren't the 2-to-a-room, eating at restaurants, drinking at lounges type of crowd. Even with the $100 ticket prices, they would have to be spending more than other visitors on everything else for that number to make sense.

 

what i can tell you about edc,the promter doesnt really make any money thats why the partnerd up with live nation.

second the clubs at nite and strip stuff take a beating as people go to the festival around late afternoon to evening and stay till around early morning.

they are on yes molly and other stuff or alcohol.

so there not realy gambling or eating out in high end or any end places.
no diffdernt than the people who go to bonnaroo and camp there.

there is an influx of money but i would say the halloween music festival down town or or vegoose as it was located more based around the casinos did drive trafic better.

yes cabs and flights do good but alot drive now that edc is happing in a few city now.

i know the people behind it very well aswell as the other events metioned.

theres alot of factors.

im leaving out the high end marque boxes they sold at edc and stuff because there clubs where empty becuase of edc.
