DH is going to an event at the convention center. I'm accompanying him and we're staying downtown. I'll probably stay downtown and gamble while he's at the convention. But if I were to venture onto the strip, where is the best place to play VP? (I like to play at the bar and am used to getting free drinks) I don't mean the most beautiful atmosphere or the best drinks; I mean a chance to winning a Royal or at least not losing a lot.

It seems Cosmo is popular but maybe more because of the drinks? Are the less attractive casinos better odds (Circus Circus?)? What about the Hilton off strip by the convention center?

or is the strip a losing proposition?
If I do this I'll probably spend some time sightseeing and shopping but I'm sure I'll want to play too.

    thanks for any advice

    Hey Now!!!!

You can check out games HERE
    I would play DT...
There's a shuttle to Gold Coast and Orleans that leaves/arrives from the former Bill's.

Pretty sure your chance at winning a Royal are the same EVERYWHERE.

Chances of keeping your money longer of course vary by pay table - how much you get paid for 2 pair, full house, etc.

Sometimes, atmosphere and free drinks overcome that. Full pay VP is not worth it is you do not like where you are playing.

By the way, the LVH (formerly called the LV Hilton) is right next to convention center if you had though about staying there.

EDIT - oops, see you have been to Vegas 20 times. Some of my advice may not make sense.

I don't require the most luxurious atmosphere or beautiful people. And this would be during the day so likely I'd just drink beer - not martinis or anything complicated. But I wouldn't want to pay for my drinks while playing.

As far as I know the only place that charges for drinks while playing VP are the bars at Wynn/Encore. Pretty much any other place on the strip will offer free drinks.

I guess it depends how far down the strip you want to go.

Mirage has a nice big bar with VP with a view of the Sports Book.

Harrahs has a bar with VP right at the entrance to the casino. If weather is nice, the doors are open.

Bellagio has a large bar with VP next to Sports book. If you sit on one side, you can see big screens. Sit on other side and you can watch people go by.

Really, just about all the casinos have bars with VP. Where have you played at in the past and liked, or not liked?

    VP bars

Was in town recently and only found 3 places that paid well. At the Rio the Shuttles and Masqurade bars, at Cosmo the Bond bar, and at Luxor the Aurorua and Flight bars. All were very friendly on the wallet . The other places (and they were many) had that familar vacuum sound.

All of these bar tenders were great and made sure we has very good free drinks.

Not if she plays deuces wild correctly...:poke:

I would try to avoid this place. Paytables are horrendous. Best game they have is 96.18% before the progressive which takes 10 quarters to activate.

CET bars generally have the same games/paytables everywhere. The best three choices are:

    7/5 Triple Bonus Plus (97.67%)
    6/5 Bonus (96.87%)
    8/5 Double Double Bonus (96.79%)

As for CET bars, if you like craft beer, you should check out Quad's new Catalyst bar. They'll comp you Dogfish Head 90 minute IPA, and have many choices on their ~20 or so taps. Other good CET bars are Gustav's at Paris, and Sully's at Bally's. If you like something more quiet and want to try some local beer, Sin City Brew Co. at Flamingo is a good place too.

Not sure about the paytables at CC, but VPFree2 says that they do have 9/7/5 Double Bonus for dollars (99.11%) at LVH, which is also nearby the convention center. But if you play that game correctly, your chances for the Royal are the worst since you should hold 4 to a flush over 3 to a Royal in that game unlike most other games.

As for the best bar paytable on the strip, it might be 7/5 Bonus (98.01%) at Casino Royale. Unfortunately, Casino Royale is dumpier than Circus Circus.

How dumpy is Casino Royale? If it's like Terribles I can tolerate that. I can look around at the beautiful places and shops but when it comes to playing I'd rather play where I can win.

I never been to Terrible's, so I can't really compare it to that. It's just worn down. Also bar area is usually crowded because they offer Michelobs for just $1 anyway. I really can't comment on the beer selection; I assume it isn't much beyond that Michelob. I usually got the $1 margaritas (RIP) instead. Fortunately, Casino Royale is smack dab in the middle of the Strip. So if you would find it too dumpy, then you can easily just go somewhere else.

And they do have a higher payback than other strip bartops, but if you really want higher paybacks on bartops, you're better off just not playing on the strip. Unless you want to buck up $2.50/hand and play the Aces and Eights progressive at Circus Circus. That obviously isn't a bartop though.

Isn't there still a bank (about 6 machines) of full pay VP machines at TI? Over near the players club booth?

At the 50c level or higher, I think so, but I haven't personally found them. The bartops there aren't worth talking about though, which is what OP would prefer I think.

So the answers I'm getting here are basically in agreement with what my DH has been saying - The strip is for tourists and the casinos on the strip figure they're not going to see those people again so the machines are set up to have the player lose - more so than off-strip or downtown.

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "set up to lose"? In VP the most common varience you will see from downtown to the strip is the pay table payout for the FH. If you play BP for example, you'll probably get 8 coins downtown (at some places) and 7 coins at most strip properties. So "depending on how many FH's you get" the better pay of 8 coins could help you play longer. As far as "winning", that's a matter of luck...you can win at the biggest dump or the most extravagant casino.

I am in the same camp as Nostresshere.....play where you feel comfortable. If you told us where you feel comfortable playing DT, that might help us make suggestions for a similar feeling property on the strip.

    Hey Now!

Try the stage bar at Terribles. Ziggy works there during the day, he's great. 8/5 JoB with a progressive for 5 coins. .25....

Bar service at Casino Royale can be slow if the bartenders are busy serving the cheap drinks. Once they know you tip, they'll look after you better.

T.I. has some progressives at their bar tops.

thanks for all that good info
It's looking like I may be on the strip for just a couple of hours. If that's the case and I'm walking, I'd probably stick to the northern half. Maybe go as far as Mirage. I know things are farther apart than they look on the map. And depending on how big the crowds are, you may not be able to walk that fast. So I could play at Mirage, TI, Casino Royale, .......what about Harrahs or Venetian?
