I don't think I have ever had a cabbie take me thru the dreaded tunnel. I don't even know what people are talking about. That being said I need to take a cab from Paris to the airport..should I say something to driver? I don't want to be "taken for a ride".

This is an old map but it will do:

Find the airport. Then look south of it for the "Freeway Tunnel Under Runway". That's the tunnel. Notice how your hotel is north and the tunnel takes you south? Well, since you are going to pay for the miles the cabbie drives, you are paying more to go the opposite direction. If the cabbie then takes the I-15, you are then going to drive behind the west side casinos when your hotel is on the east side. That's the racket. The tunnel will save you time but my experience is has been it's not enough of a time savings to justify the additional costs and my tunnel experience was going to Rio.

I have never heard of anyone being tunneled on the way to the airport, only leaving it

Just tell the cabbie to take Flamingo and Paradise. That is a right turn out of Paris, (onto LV Blvd) another right at Flamingo and one more right at Paradise and into the airport. 3 simple right turns and you are there.

    Well now you have

Departing from the Flamingo entrance of Caesar's last month the cabbie did not U-turn at the 1st set of lights as I expected but headed straight for the Interstate. Fare was about $25 but no tip to worry about

This is an excellent visual for people to understand what being "tunneled" means. The cabbies fling you far south, then far west. All the while that meter is running.

so there's got to be a good reason for it, and i can guess the answer, but i'll ask, since i've never read it:

    why does the tunnel exist?

I believe they added another runway to McCarren and the tunnel goes under the runway.

that would make sense. so the tunnel replaced a surface road that went south of the airport prior to the additional runway?

The thing I found most fascinating about that map was the "approved monorail extension".
If they actually ever build that, it would - finally - make the monorail something of value!
