For my next trip, it looks like I'll be doing my first ever downtown stay. The first part of the trip will be at Main Street Station - then I'll move to my home away from home, Wynn.

Since this will be my first DT stay, I have a few questions. Please feel free to answer as many or few as you can. Thanks!

    1. Can I charge a meal at another DT Boyd property to my room at MSS (with the hope that I can have it taken care of if my play warrants it)?

2a. How about some breakfast suggestions? Proximity to MSS is the top priority (other than food quality, of course). I'm just looking for a good American type breakfast or maybe some flapjacks or French Toast. I'm also looking for something reasonably quick - my plan is to grab a bite then go back to the room to watch the early football games and be a bum for a few hours. (It does not need to be at a Boyd property.)

2b. Where can I grab a good (big) coffee to bring back up to the room. Again, proximity to MSS is key.

    3. What are your favorite spots for dinner? While Boyd properties are preferred (if I can get it comp'd), I'm open to any and all suggestions.

    4. My sister and BIL will be with me and they'll be paying for their room. What sort of BJ or craps action would get them the room comp'd on the back end? Can they combine their play?

I'm sure I'll have plenty more questions. But these will do for now.

    Many thanks!

Dupar's @ Golden Gate, right across the street. Never disappoints.

You can charge back from California and Fremont to your MSS room. Good breakfast choices:

777 brewery has a small selection of breakfast choices until 7am (it's closed from 7am to 11am)
California has a cafe with cheap breakfast options
Fremont has a cafe with cheap breakfast options as well
None of the Boyd breakfast places are great
MSS buffet for breakfast is a good fast choice

I would choose Cal Cafe or MSS buffet and do a takeout coffee.

Du Pars, Hash House and Magnolias are all good choices for non-boyd breakfast
For a big takeout coffee. Plaza has a McDonalds, Fremont a Dunkin Donuts, Golden Nugget a Starbucks.

I would 2nd the Dupar's suggestion. Pancakes, French Toast and their cinnamon rolls are all worth going back for. Easy walk to the Golden Gate from MSS.

McD's in the Plaza for coffee will be the closest to MSS.

For breakfast and assuming you don't want the MSS buffet, then I would suggest Market Street Cafe (24/7) inside Cal. If there is a line, and there usually is, since you are a single, just bypass the line and sit at the counter.

The Fremont Garden Court Cafe has an option (and separate line with never anyone in it) to order breakfast off the menu. We are both fans of the Deuces. Two eggs, two pancakes, two sausages, for ~$6.

We've eaten breakfast at both places numerous times. Always good.

Boyd for dinner...3 options. Pasta Pirate or Redwood in the Cal or Second St inside Fremont. OK, 4 options. The 777 at MSS is also good.

All our meals at Boyd downtown are comped so we have eaten at all of these places too many times to count. But, they are always very good! All the prices are reasonable.

I prefer Second St, but my wife likes Redwood, but really you won't go wrong at any of them and none are ala carte! Hard to beat the porterhouse special at Redwood for $24, including dessert. My wife's fav is the 1.5# split, king crab legs for $40 and mine is the 1# bone in ribeye for $29.

If you like escargot, both Redwood & Second St have a great appetizer for $11.
We don't pay, not directly anyway, :wink2: but I'm including prices as a reference.

MSS has WiFi, but the charge is $10 per day and they won't comp it. :poke: If you get a south facing room, on certain floors, you can pick up the new free WiFi from Fremont St.

Coffee - The only place at MSS is the casino bar in the morning. Standard size cup for ~$1.25. McDonalds at the Plaza, but that is a two block walk from the MSS elevators, it didn't sound like you wanted that.

Sorry, I can't answer any questions about room charges. or comps.

2b. grab a coffee from Lapperts on the 2nd floor of the Cal - just cross using the overpass from MSS and its on the right once you are in the Cal.

coffees, lattes etc. and you can use your points to pay for 40% discount.

Is the Cal buffet good for breakfast? Do you recall price?

We have only done the Cal "buffet" twice because it was before 7 AM and the MSS buffet wasn't open yet. It is very small. If you want a breakfast buffet, I highly recommend MSS. Eggs & omelets cooked to order, plenty of variety. Even at breakfast, they have plenty of lunch items also.

With B connected card, breakfast is $6.99 at MSS.

The Cal buffet inside the Market St Cafe is tiny by comparison and nothing made to order. I don't recall a price. Their menu prices for breakfast are reasonable.

If you're doing a buffet downtown for breakfast, I recommend MSS.

Kiwiboy, I just wanted to confirm, is this firsthand information on charge back to rooms? meaning, did you yourself charge your meals back to the MSS room? We have heard second hand information but I was wondering if your info is firsthand, that you actually charged your meals at the Cal and Fremont back to your room at MSS.

The breakfast buffet at the Cal Market street Cafe is relatively small, ready made scrambled eggs, meats (susage, ham, etc.), fruits starches (bread, cereals, etc.). I think it cost something like $6.99 or $7.99. like others have mentioned, the Market Street Cafe also has menu items with omlettes and the usual breakfast things so you don't have to have the buffet.

There are many eateries at the cal and the promenade, as someone mentioned I think lapperts is open early for coffee. There is also a cal lanai near the binions entrance of the Cal which serves some foods and coffee but I think it opens at 9 or 9:30 am.

the good thing about the cal and promenade eating places is that you don't have to go outside, there is a walkway from MSS to get to the Cal.

As others have said, there are other eateries in the area, like HHAGG and others.

Thanks for all the response, gang. Much appreciated. :nworthy:

@Joe – thanks for all the detail! Now, a follow up, if you don’t mind: I know you get all of your F/B taken care of. If you don’t charge it to the room, how does it work? If I want to try to get dinner comp'd, would I need to ask prior to heading out to eat?

    Okay…how about one more:

    5. I’ve heard (well, read actually) folks complain about the trains or freeway noise at MSS. I’ve dealt with the Encore nightclubs, so I think I’ll be fine. But, just in case…what rooms should I ask for? Is it either-or with respect to highway vs. train? (Is one worse than the other?) Or can both be avoided? Is asking for a “quiet room” good enough?

Hopefully Kiwiboy can give you firsthand information on how to charge to your room at another boyd casino. Usually when I am staying at that hotel I usually tell them to charge it back to my room, room, xxx. they usually check to verify and I am set, not sure how it works when you are at another boyd property and want to charge back to your room elsewhere.

    Noise:

the north rooms at the MSS are facing the freeway and so noisy. think about how noisy it is right near your interstate and you get an idea how noisy it can be.

I would recommend a south facing room closer to Main Street (away from the train tracks). Maybe high floor would be best to avoid the main st noise (ambulances, trucks, etc.). you are far enough to not hear the FSE noise.

IMHO, unless you are a light sleeper, much of the time the train noise isn't that loud unless you are at the end of the hallway nearest the tracks. But many have complained about the train noise so might be best to stay closer to main st.

We're given a pair of "gold" cards. They are good for everything at any downtown Boyd properties. I just sign.

Room noise...We get a suite and all the suites end in the #18 and there is only one per floor. Truth be told, I like my adult beverages and the noise is never a problem for me, we face the tracks and the freeway.

Most quiet rooms would be low, odd numbers. Like a 1201, 1001 etc. Those face Main Street but you could still end up with the garbage trucks dumping the dumpsters at 5 AM. I don't have a problem sleeping, so none of this bothers me.

For morning coffee at MSS, I always go across the bridge to Aloha at the Cal. Coffee is only .50...don't bother with cream and sugar as we keep a bottle of Baileys in the room fridge...best deal going

Thanks Joe for the information about the points. I assumed that's what they were when I looked online, but now I know. I stayed downtown for the first time in a very long time at the Fremont last October, and I am going back for 4 free nights. I also asked the pitboss for a dinner comp and they always gave me one. I never used points for anything, or so I think.

Yall wrote a glowing review about Andiamo recently https://www.vegasmessageboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98135

...sounds like I'm going to have to add this one to the list. Of course I'm already planning on hitting SW while at Wynn. But, c'mon...it's Vegas. You get a free pass on Cholesterol while in Vegas, right?

So, PLM...is there any reason for me to leave MSS for craps while downtown? I'm not going to pass up 20X odds for 3X4X5X. But are any of the 10X odds joints worth hitting instead of MSS?

unfortunately not all casinos downtown have good craps odds. the Cal and fremont only have 2x odds. The next place with decent odds is at the El Cortez with I think 10x odds (or was it 20x, I forget, sorry). But at the EC they have $3 craps tables during certain times of the day. Fremont is the only other place that has $3 craps tables (but only 2x odds).

I forget what the odds are at GG, plaza, lvc, D, and 4q but I doubt they are more than 2 to 5x at best. I think binions is similar to the strip (3/4/5) but I don't play there too often (IMHO, obnoxious pit crew acting like they are on the strip).

Well then, it sounds like there’s no reason to leave MSS for craps.

    Mahalo!
