Someone said on AllVegasPoker.com that the GN Poker room 2-4 cash game was full of grouchy old men who hated young guys.

This was my 4th time in this room (Yeah, I chickened out on tournies) and I fit that demographic perfectly, except I don't necessarily hate young guys, as long as they are older than 35.

It is impossible to get a read on some of these people, since most will chase the flop no matter what they have in the pocket. I had to get away from my tight game, which threw me off. I was about $150 down after 4 sessions, which averaged about 4 hours each.

My sad tale: I had pocket K-J. The flop was K-J-J. Guy next to me bets heavily. I call him each time and raised once. Turn, nothing. River nothing. I bet, guy raises. At this point, I said out loud "WTF do you have?" The only thing he could have was pocket Kings and since I had one and another was flopped, I figured that was a huuuuge stretch. So I called. I was in too deep now. Guess what? You already know the ending. He had the other two Kings.

Waitress service was for the most part good, although one time after the floor man was asked to call a waitress and didn't, I went to the bar and told the waitresses gathered there chit-chatting that we needed service in the poker room, that we hadn't had service for an hour and a half. We she finally brought my beer, I told her the floor man had her tip. Mean and rotten, right?

One thing I don't like is when players yell at the dealers for making the very rare mistake. No one is perfect. Put yourself on their side of the table sometime. It really isn't that easy of a job.

Another thing, the lighting is atrocious. Very difficult to see the cards from the ends of the table.

Another tale: A normal hand nothing really going on, everyone folds after the turn except for one youngish lady. She's just about to muck when she says "I just have to show everyone this" and turns over a 2 - 7 hearts straight flush. The dealer says "Hold on" and calls over the floorman and he verifies a $240 bonus!

More bluffing than normal was going on. You would see people winning with two pair, 6's and 2's, with their hole cards being the 6 and the 2 while they were in first or second position. It was more of a kitchen table game, playing for quarters.

Despite all of that, the attraction is the 2 - 4, which is virtually impossible to find on the Strip. You can hardly find a game of 3 - 6 being dealt. All of the young yahoos want No Limit or Tournies.

I, hopefully, if I don't croak in the meantime, will be back next year.

Don't forget to mention the free show happening at the end of the bar out on the casino floor with the ladies of the evening plying their trade. lol

I guess, but I got away from how I like to play, for example, A - anything, because there was no way to read anybody.

This was $2-$4 limit? That is a frustrating game if you want to play sensible poker, lol.

2/4 limit still exists on the strip in a few places.

Flamingo and MGM Grand still have it. Ballys and Mirage offers 3/6. Monte Carlo and Excalibur offer 2-6 spread limit.

But expecting players to actually play well in a 2/4 game is asking a lot though. And if you want to win, you really don't want that anyway.

A year or so ago I got an itch to play some 6-12 limit. I told the floor man I couldn't remember why I stopped. He laughed and said "you will." Shortly there after I did.

    :)

That said, I've enjoyed playing at the Nugget.

I was under the impression you had to use both your hole cards to win the high hand bonus. If the young lady did in fact have the 2-7 of hearts, they paid her incorrectly. No way to make a 5 card straight flush with those hole cards.

"I was under the impression you had to use both your hole cards to win the high hand bonus. "

    Depends on the room.

So when the player bet "heavily" in 2-4 limit, was he betting $2 or $4?

I think it sounds like the board was a 2-7 straight flush, and assume she had 2 of the cards in the middle. I also have only played in rooms where both hole cards had to play.

I may have gotten her hole cards wrong. End result is she won a $240 bonus with cards she was one second away from mucking.

Maybe I AM playing the wrong game for my personal style. Maybe I SHOULD try a No Limit game. I have only been playing the game for 3 trips now and I might have things a bit misconstrued.

Somehow, I keep thinking 2-4 is easier, but I guess it isn't.

2/4 is not easier, as no one folds, they all chase, and 6-2 offsuit wins hands. You can't protect your hand in 2/4 limit. You have to make the game expensive enough to get people to fold, and they are not going to fold for another $2 or $4.

Also, the rake is really hard to overcome at those stakes. The only winner is the drop box for the casino.

I used play any where up to 20-40 limit hold em , their always will be players who play crap cards or any suited cards. Its not a higher limit you go up the less the bad beats , its a nature of poker period.

I like the nugget poker room. I'll switch up from 2-4 to 1-2 depending on who's at the table. I remember a 4am 2-4 game last time I was there with a drunken fool who called to the river with ace high every hand. Made a bit of money that night. Sometimes the 1-2 game is a bit too serious for me, with guys who think they are pros yelling at each other and the dealer over stupid stuff.

You'll find a lot of grinders at night/early morning playing 2-4 just to hit the high hand bonus, which is doubled between certain hours. At that point, it's more like bingo than poker. I don't expect to win with good cards, I adjust my play sometimes so I call preflop with almost anything and see what the flop brings before folding.

The Sunday 5k guaranteed tournament is a good one to play. Usually under 150 entrants and a $100 buy in. Last trip I came first and gave my bankroll a $2300 boost.

This made me laugh out loud.

I am not a fan of limit poker.

You didn't do to bad. Your personal rake is roughly 4 BB's an hour. Add in the dealer tokes and bad beat jackpot money and your playing break-even poker at that level.

Low limit poker has a ton of river rats. Unless you're getting lucky, you'll have a lot of bad beats playing good poker on those tables.

My goal was to play some poker, have a little fun and maybe win a few bucks. Much of what you folks are saying is over my head.

The reason I am reluctant to play 1-2 NL is the thought of some smartass just high stacking me back to Philly in about 20 minutes.

The more I think about it, the thing that irked me the most about this room was the very poor lighting. I know I threw away at least one straight because I misread the board.

My eyewear prescription is accurate, so maybe I'm just too slow for poker.
