I like the freedom of a car when I visit 6 days just for the freedom to get away for some distraction and to check out new places but for $350 plus
with insurance and gas I can take a lot of buses and cabs for that money and no worries about drinks.

the only problem is the occasional laziness factor and then just not bothering.

I have learned that the express bus from fremont is a lot less hassle than trying to park at the outlet mall!

and the airport bus to get to tropicana from fremont is awesome!

Are you a Costco member? I'm looking around at rates right now for an upcoming trip and Costco has the cheapest rates of anything I've been able to find if cost is the only reason you aren't going to get a car.

You're dead on about Costco. I'm going in Oct and the lowest price full size rental I could find for a week long rental was almost $300, and through Costco was $165.

I'm just doing some research right now for a possible trip in November and your numbers are right where mine are. I too am looking for a full size and most places are around $300 while Costco is half of that.

the car is only $175 for the 7 day rental plus I buy insurance at home and with gas estimate comes close to 350 total

not so much the cost but not having to worry about driving is nice but the freedom of the car is great too

I don't think having a car is freedom. I think have a car is like have a chain around your ankle. Every time you want to go somewhere, you have to go get the car. If you valet it, you have tip to get it and drop it off... adding to the expense. If I'm staying at MGM and hanging out at Mirage for the day and want to check out the forum shops or Harrahs, Flamingo, Bally, etc... I can't casino hop because I have to worry about getting the car. I did this once and found that it limited my freedom so much that I absolutely hated it. On top of that, I couldn't drink or had very little to drink. What a buzz-kill that was.

And, I spent way more on the car per day than I would ever have spent on cabs or walking around. Great. So the car I hated cost me my freedom and more money than if I just took a cab, bus, or walked. Never again.

So, if you're not planning to spend $60/day on transportation... I say ditch the car and have a better time.

My compact car for 4 days Sept 12-16 TOTAL COST $51 which is $12.75 per day....You cant go anywhere RT for $12.75 in a cab..... and now I have the freedom to do as I please and go where I want to go...Red Rock...Death Valley...M Resort...and you think a cab makes sense? WoW Just WoW

i think everybody has their own level of convenience. while you may feel a car to be a chain around your ankle, others can't live without a car, myself included. since I don't stay on the strip I would want the car to get around. i don't drink excessively, especially when I gamble so I don't have any drinking and driving problem. as others mentioned, for me the cost of a rental is way less than using cabs or buses to get me around vegas. If I want to drive to the M resort, or visit the galleria mall I don't have to worry, just get in the car and drive. without a car I am pretty limited and cannot travel very easily.

but to each his/her own, if the OP doesn't feel the need to go anyplace that requires a car then either rent for a day or two or just nix the car.

I frequently go to Vegas and have done Red Rock, VOF, Death Valley, Grand Canyon, etc. I have no desire to go back. I have no desire to the M Resort either. All of the places I desire to go, I can either walk, bus, or cab to.

And, that's an unbelievable rate. I doubt it includes taxes, fees, gas, etc. all of which will add on to that rate. And, that just means it's probably closer to $20/day for the car. I can go plenty of places with that in my budget for transportation everyday. Valet park? Going to cost you a tip... plan on adding $5-10 more to your budget per stop.

Self park? Long walks to and from the parking garage. Want to drink? Well, you probably aren't too smart to begin with because you rented a car and now you're drinking and driving. A compounded mistake.

Don't want to stay in the same place for very long? Casino hop? Well, you'll be spending more precious Vegas time going back to the garage to get that car. Or you'll be driving your car next door just to discover you want to go somewhere else and you've wasted more Vegas time.

Not my with Vegas time. Not worth it at all. I think I'd pay not to have to rent a car.

Nope. Not a moron. I just do math better than you do.

"MISCELLANEOUS LOCATION FEE MAY APPLY AT COUNTER"
    and
Nowhere does it state "free unlimited gas."

Last I checked, gas stations make you pay for gas.

Get into an accident, have someone scratch your car,and you'll have to pay a deductible. Valet and you have to tip. Take it back and you have to fill it up with gas. Leave trash in the car, pay to have it cleaned.

Since my time is so valuable, you'll also be losing money on walking to/from the garage. The list goes on.

You may *think* you're paying $50 for that car, but it's costing you much more than you realize.

Never let the facts get in the way of a good whine.

All your replies do nothing to change the fact that my rental car that is MUCH MUCH cheaper than taking 1 cab RT a day.... period

Who said I need to take a cab somewhere everyday? I take a limo to and from the airport and that's all the transportation I need.

    Check and mate.
