The wife and I are making our 6th trip to Vegas next month. We've been to all the strip and downtown places, and decided to rent a car for a day to check out the dam and a few off-strip casinos. So I'm looking for a handful of casinos where we can play a little slots and maybe get a little bit of a different vibe than the strip or downtown. We're not looking to spend a lot of time at any one place - just want to check out something different. Suggestions??

Not that you necessarily need a car to get there, but my favorite off-Strip casinos are Orleans, Sam's Town, and Suncoast. (This shouldn't be a surprise from seeing my countdown timer.) All three have movies, bowling, and the usual variety of restaurants, but Sam's is unique in having a large atrium where you can escape the noise and craziness of the casino.

If you're going to the dam, try something along the Boulder Strip. if that is too low rent, the Red Rock casino is cool. And you're next to the canyon and can check that out as well

I agree with Turtleman's suggestions, but you also have to be realistic. Figure at least 3 hours for the dam, more if you take the tour. You also want to make a stop at the new bypass bridge. Park on the NV side and walk over it. Beautiful! Here is a pic from the last time we were there:

I don't know if this is new, but a few months ago we went to Sam's and that little bar in the center of the atrium had VP bartops.

Do you mean the Ram's Head Bar right next to Mystic Falls or did they add another bar in the atrium? I've had drinks at Ram's Head before, but not very often, so I can't recall if they had VP machines there or not. I'll find out in three weeks, anyway.

Always love a good photo of the dam... sure would be nicer without the racing-stripe or bathtub "ring" as many refer to it though. I understand levels have reached a new low this year... AGAIN... could you upstream folks please send us some more water!!!

To the OP's question... consider a very short trip into North Las Vegas to Jerry's, have some GREAT prime-rib and gamble some.

There's Green Valley Ranch and South Point resorts on the south side of Vegas. The GVR is conveniently on the way back from the dam on the 215.

    Good pic, Joe.

Too many details to remember. iirc, you had to walk up a few steps to the bar and it was right in the center of the atrium. It didn't open until~4 again, iirc.

Off strip I prefer M Resort, Southpoint, Silverton. Three casinos with completely different vibes.

Joe: Yep, that's the Ram's Head, though it's toward the back of the atrium on the other side of the path next to the falls. That's cool, I just thought (hoped) they had put in another bar. Can't have too many, you know! However, I still don't remember if they had machines at the bar. It's nice to escape sometimes, which is why I'd be in the atrium to begin with.

With the dam in the mix, keeping it on the south/southeast side of the valley makes sense. I suggest three, each with its own unique vibe and/or look:

    Sunset Station
    M
    Silverton

Nobody mentioned the Hacienda just feet before the dam exit on 93. A dive, but cheap edible breakfast buffet or sitdown cafe. $1 craps. Yes I did say $1 craps. That's if you're going to the dam.

If you're headed the other way, go to the Suncoast or even Red Rock. Great buffets at both and excellent gaming.

I also highly recommend the Pinball Hall of Fame on Tropicana

I spent some time playing $1 craps at Jokers Wild this trip and enjoyed being a low roller. Good drink service and an okay environment. If you want to see a casino on a respirator, stop at Klondike and look inside. Don't worry, you should be the only person in the place. We did a dive casino run and I was surprised at how nice Skyline was.

Not many casinos out that way, but I highly suggest Valley Of Fire State Park to anyone that has a car out in Vegas, it is gorgeous out there.

The ride out is a huge speed trap, have been twice and I bet I see 20 cop cars each time on I-15

You can pick-up the free shuttle for the Palms at Caesars/ Forum Shops, once there you can walk across the street and visit Rio and Gold Coast. or take the free shuttle from Harrahs to the Rio and walk backwards across the street and visit the Gold Coast and the Palms. Shuttle service approx. every 30-60 min. throughout the day. No players card or room key needed.

Green Valley Ranch, Sunset Station, M, SouthPoint and Sam's Town are all good choices.

I didn't remember bartop VP in Sam's Town's atrium area. Perhaps they are new. I'll have to check them out next time.

All good choices listed above. Valley of Fire in my husbands eyes, was more impressive than red rock canyon. On the way back from there we stopped at Cannery for the first time. We love M, South Point, Silverton...GVR or the Boulder Strip are great if you are going to the Dam. Red Rock Casino had a great lunch buffet, we stopped there after driving the canyon. We actually like all the off strip properties. Pinball hall of fame and if you are into history at all Atomic Test Museum.

We haven't been yet but considering Clark County Museum down in Henderson off of Boulder...I think the husband just wants to go see Mark from Pawn Stars.

I have thought about going to that myself, I think it is only $2 to go.

Silverton has the Bass Pro Shops which is fun if like outdoors stuff.
