Counterfeit $100

I tried to search the threads and couldn't find any prior posts on this subject. Just came back from Vegas last week and when Hubby went to our bank to make a deposit, the ATM kept spitting out one of his $100 bills. When he took it inside he was told it was counterfeit. The bank let him keep the bill because he didn't include it in his deposit. My questions:
1. Do the casinos keep track of all their bills (serial numbers)?
2. Should my husband contact the casino?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

 

As a former banker who dealt with counterfeits and the Secret Service, I would recommend that you call the Secret Service immediately and get their advice.

 

Their advice will be to turn it and you will be out $100.00. No way of tracking where it came from at this point.

 

just pass it off to someone else by using it to pay for something. just don't do it at one of those stores that uses those pens to check large bills. your best bet is a one on one transaction like a garage sale type of thing.

 

WOW... screw the next guy... c'mon... really? I'm surprised the bank gave it back to you, but if you're like me and now that you know, how are you going to attempt to pass it along? I gotta believe "knowingly" passing counterfeit currency comes with some stiff penalties... sure wouldn't be worth it to me! But then one of the other VMBers described me as the kinda guy who would "remind the teacher she forgot to assign homework."

If you attempted to pass it off, Id do so at a mom/pop type store or maybe if you were at some sort of event that had a Chinese Auction or something of that nature. Personally, Id be scared to but doesn't hurt giving you ideas.

 

During my Avis Rent A Car days, a customer paid cash at the end of his rental, the next day went to the bank as usual and one of the $20's he paid with was fake. The bank put it in a ziplock and told me they HAVE to send it to the secret service. I, too, am shocked they let you keep it, deposited or not

 

Use it at a table game...

 

save the bill and use it on your next trip to same casino.

 

How does it look? I wouldn't try to pass it off if it's in pretty bad shape. Big bills that aren't pristine are going to attract more attention than crisp brand new ones.

I've worked a couple behind the scenes jobs where I dealt with a lot of cash. Every counterfit bill I've come across has looked like crap. Weird texture, blurry picture. It boggles my mind honestly that people aren't able to spot them better.

 

No joke! Now, I'm NOT recommending that you do this, but if you truly feel compelled to pass off the phony money, I can't think of anywhere that treats $100's as casually as casinos. Okay, some dealers go through the motions of holding up the bills and pretending they're checking for something, but I doubt if the best Secret Service agent could scrutinize the bills nearly as fast. I suspect the dealers are looking to see if Ben's picture is present instead of, say, Mickey Mouse. Checking for the security stripe isn't easy.

 

happened to me year ago. Came back from the casino and the ATM spit it back. After looking at he bill closely I noticed it looked a little funny and went to my local comic book store I have been a customer for years and he did the pen thing for me and it was counterfeit. So I went back to the casino a few months later and just wished with some other $100 at the craps table and all was good.

 

I wouldn't try to pass it anywhere.

There was a British woman detained and cuffed in a Vegas casino a few years back when she tried to use a fake hundred she got from a travel agency here. Completely unaware it was fake according to the news story.

While I was googling to confirm my memory of the story I also found a Carson City man jailed for trying to cash one at a casino.

I think you should err on the side of caution.

 

yes, I always thought that if the bank found a counterfeit bill they were required by law to send it to secret service, you couldn't keep it. secret service gets counterfeits regularly and they have to determine the threat level of the money. as we get more techie the bills are starting to look and feel more like the real thing so secret service has to determine the threat level and if there is a flood of these types of counterfeits on the market then they want to know asap.

 

I wouldn't dream of passing it off to a third party knowingly. It's fraudulent, dishonest and entirely selfish.

I would take it with me to Vegas next time though and just throw it in a pile of other notes I wanted changing - the casino didn't give it you deliberately but that doesn't mean you deserve to get it back.

As a mom and pop shop, we've had bills here and there that were counterfeit. Mostly $20s though because I pen every $100. Its part of doing business. The bank normally takes them and sends them out. You lose out on the cash.

Seems a little excessive to arrest someone for using one unknowingly. I could see if someone was paying with a wad of them but arresting for a single bill is pretty harsh.

 

Go to a strip club, and hold out the 100 in a private room for a dance. You will get your moneys worth. Just make sure it is a strip club you never plan on going back to and I would high tail it out of there right after. I would actually give here that 100 and a 20.00. So at least she is getting what she usually gets. I don't feel it would be good karma to completely screw someone over. Especially a girl that is probably just trying to work her way through law school.

 

You are nuts for admitting to committing a felony on the Internet like that. I'm sure nothing will come from it but, damn, why even take that chance?

@OP, I would report the counterfeit bill to the proper authorities and give them all the info you can about where, when and how you got it. You will be out $100 but the information you give them will assist them in doing their job so someone else, or even you, are less likely to get screwed in the future.

I'm sure every piece of data they collect helps them build a story of where the counterfeit money is coming from. If you retain the bill or try to "recycle" it back into circulation then you are not helping the situation.

 

If you are certain of the Casino you got it from, I would return it to them and tell them you are returning the fake bill you received form them. I would ask them to give you an authentic bill or tell them you will feel compelled to notify the authorities and explain to the FBI where you received the bill and that you suspect there are likely many more.

They may out of good will just swap you out, or at least give you a credit to use. Worth a try and not illegal.
