I will be in Vegas in November.

Any reason to goto Reno for a day?

Is it much different than Vegas or perhaps other things to see?

    Thanks

My brother went thru there last year and said it sucked, sorry about my being blunt, but those were his exact words.

Laughlin on the other hand, he loved.

I personally have never been to either.

First off, Reno is not a typical day trip from Vegas. It's not doable via car so I assume your going to hop on a plane and do a round trip from vegas to reno?

A did a weekend driving trip to reno when I was in the bay area a few years back. I enjoyed it, it's a somewhat similar to downtown Vegas, but downtown vegas is much better IMO. From a casino standpoint, I wouldn't go to reno. I like the scenery in reno, it's in the Sierra Nevada range which is more scenic than vegas and plenty of ski resorts in the area if you like to ski.

To answer your question, I wouldn't leave vegas to go to reno.

Since gambling isn't all that important to me, I enjoy Reno. Then again, I enjoy Reno for golf and outdoor pursuits around Washoe County and up the hill. And downtown is fun when there's stuff going on at the whitewater park, or you catch a game at the cool stadium, and don't miss the car museum or the art museum.

Now if you want a hole, it's Laughlin.

However, a day trip from Vegas, even an overnighter? No thanks. Plan a separate trip and take in Carson and Virginia cities, Tahoe and Truckee, do a day or two in Reno. It's a cool interface of high desert and mountains (if not on the order of Bend).

I agree with Ken. We love Reno/Lake Tahoe but you can't do it in a day. We have done the drive several times and enjoy it but it's 7-7 1/2 hrs. We stay at least 5 days, dividing our time b/w Reno and Tahoe. We like outdoor stuff and there's plenty to do there. We also like gambling at Peppermill and Atlantis. We've even thought about moving there from NJ.

    Lake Tahoe

Thanks for all the responses. And yes I was planning on taking a plane early morning, returning at night.

    But doesn't sound too encouraging.

I just wanted to see a another city :) and new it was close.

And with the golf tournaments ive seen the past few weeks, they were in Lake Tahoe. Looks really nice there :)

It's a 1 hour flight... If you're not lookin' to compare "gambling wise", then Ken described things well. This corner of N. Nevada IS beautiful!!! I can't tell you how many people have come for a meeting and remarked "they had no idea it was so nice here".

Edgewood and Martis Camp? I played Edgewood last week in one of the celeb-ams. Love that course. And Martis looks so great. Never been but played next door at Schaffer's Mill. I love mountain golf.

The Celebrity golf tournament was last weekend at Edgewood (South Lake Tahoe) steps away from the casinos there and the Reno-Tahoe Open is this weekend I'm pretty sure at Montreaux, a beautiful course heading up the Mount Rose Hwy from Reno to North Shore Tahoe. Those televised tournaments always show off the area very nicely.

Yes, the American Century at Edgewood Tahoe and the Jr. Am at Martis. Plus the Reno-Tahoe Open coming up at Montreux, a killer Nicklaus design that I've been lucky enough to play; we even finished second in the pro-am. Only Edgewood is publicly accessible of these three. If you want to play up that way drop me a line. From the Carson Valley through up in Portola there's a ton of great golf in the high desert and mountains.

That course always looks brown and ugly, doesn't it? You aren't alone

One of the reasons golf is out of whack here in the States is our misguided belief that everything needs to be thickly lush and emerald green.

It certainly does :) and looks like their hitting off "cement" fairways/greens.
