money saving tips at mgm

We're booked to stay at MGM for 8 nights in June, as residents of the hotel can we expect special offers, 2-4-1's etc, would you recommended Picking up a copy of LVA when we get there? Never been to Vegas before and were not planning on gambling every day, so looking for some tips?

Some hotels do give guests a book or sheet of coupons when they check in, but I don't recall hearing of MGM Grand giving one out.

For the Las Vegas Advisor you can go to their website and see what coupons they have in the book: LVA List of Coupons

There aren't in there for MGM Grand and the coupons in there in general are probably not going to be of much value to you: its going to be your first trip to Las Vegas and there is just so much to see and do on The Strip for you, where all the big fancy mega resorts are... almost all the coupons they have are for small grubby little joints that are "off-strip" (away from the tourist area) and unless you have a car you'll end up wasting more in cab fare to get to these places than you will save in the end.

Plus its your first time in Vegas, are you really going to want to leave the glitz and glamour of being in Las Vegas to go to some little dump just so you can save $5-6 on dinner? If money will be that tight there is a food court in MGM Grand with some cheap dining choices and Tropicana and Hooters (the casino, not the restaurant) are across the street and you can find some cheap dining there.


As for what to do:

You might not be planning on gambling every day... but it is Vegas

Bring a camera and some comfy walking shoes. You can spend a lot of time just walking around some of these big mega resorts just to look at them, do some window shopping and see what they have to offer.

Don't plan too much: for a first trip you are likely going to find that you will run out of time than have too much of it.

If you go out front of MGM Grand to The Strip and then head to your right you will come upon a bunch of little shops and go further you'll find an ABC Store. If you want to stock up stuff for the room like snacks, drinks and water this is where you will want to go to pick the stuff up - it'll be a lot cheaper than what you'll pay in the hotel gift shop.

 

I think both the ACG and LVA coupon books pay for themselves and then some if you spend a night downtown. The Flame is a great steakhouse and both coupon books offer 50% off. Use one of the show tickets and a few free/match play coupons and you've more than paid for either one. LVA also has the $50 Palms coupon.

 

You will probably break even with the coupon books plus you will have to be a slave to the coupons.

Its not worth the added hassle.

When you get there you will see some books in the cab and in your room. There are coupons and discounts in those.

You can also go online and get show tickets. Smartervegas and travelzoo have cheap tickets that you can buy from your smartphone.

I personally would avoid the tix 4 tonight booth and get them online instead.

 

Yep, done the coupon run thing once, and never again, you sure end up being a "slave" to the coupon book. Much better just to go and do what you feel like.

 

Coupons are great for off-Strip properties, but coupon opportunities at the Strip are limited. Since most Las Vegas visitors stay on the Strip I can understand why they don't have a lot of interest in coupons. But it's very different for those of us who live here.

The LVA coupons allow me to try buffets and restaurants all over town inexpensively. When someone mentions a local property I generally have something to say, since I've probably been to the property during the past year.

 

since you do have 7 days, you may be able to use the coupons books without much hassle depending what you consider a hassle. One night you go downtown use the SDX eat at the Flame, use free play coupons at the Plaza and Vegas Club. Enjoy the Freemont Experience when you are there. Next use the 202 on Flamingo and use coupons at the Ellis Island and enjoy their micro brewed beer from there walk to the Tuscany and use the free play for joining. Get back on the 202 for 2 stops and you will be in front of the Silver Sevens use the free play and you will have more than paid for the book the ACG and saw the restuarant row. These are two trips off the strip that are easy with the 3 day bus pass. Enjoy your trip.

 

The food Court at MGM is a good cheap option. In particular, the pizza place has some good food and it won't break the bank. Don't get me wrong, it is expensive for pizza, but compared to other places not bad. I would suggest getting some garlic knots with your meal; they are reasonable in price and are really tasty.
