The reviews of the montreal casino i've found online don't look too good. I'm wondering if anyone on this board has been there and can offer some insight.
I'm going to be in the city, and am wondering if its worth a quick excursion one night to win big and pay for the trip.

Whew, not in something like 15 years. It is outside of the downtown core...had to take a subway or bus there. All depends on how much time you've got in the city. If 1 night only, stay downtown.

I'm in the same boat, it's been forever. As I recall, the crowd definitely skews younger (since the drinking/gambling age in Quebec is only 18), there aren't free drinks, and alcohol isn't allowed on the gaming floor. It's okay if you really want to gamble, but it's a weird experience.

I haven't been in a number of years either. It's a small casino, it was nice inside, and it might be worth a few hours. I wouldn't plan a trip around it. When I was there they had a Sigma Derby on the top floor, not sure if it would still be there. It is away from ne other tourit areas, at Metro Parc Jean Drapeau. From there you can get a shuttle to the Casino, or to Six Flags.

it's ok - but it is no Vegas experience.

It is on an island in the St Lawrence river just off the coast near the old city/port - the artificial island created for the 1967 Worlds Fair. This is the same island that has the Formula 1 track for the Montreal Grand Prix. Other than when the race is on, the course is open for runners, cyclist, and roller-bladders - a great, smooth course. There is a bridge to the island.

The casino itself is pretty nice. Decent size - many floor (it is not small, as another poster claimed. As of a few years ago, it was still in the top 10 largest casino floors in the world) However...

    • No alcohol while gambling/on casino floor (and no comp drinks at all)
    • No smoking in the casino (they used to have smoking lounges, but not anymore)
    • Annoying extra bet when playing blackjack - a person who is NOT sitting at the table can bet on your hand. On crowded nights, it is VERY annoying to have people constantly reaching over you (from behind) to place a bet on your hand. HATE IT!
All in all, it is a very nice casino, and worth a visit (a bit of gambling and dinner) - but only if you have some extra time. The international flair of the casino is fun, but the drinking situation and my dislike of the BJ side bets makes it hard for me to spend much time there.

Maybe JD is right... It may not be small in terms of sq footage, but it seems small because it's vertical. It's like a bunch of small casinos stacked on eachother.

yeah, the size is a bit obfuscated by the cavernous layout and multiple floors. There is no single, big open casino floor like many in Vegas.

    Casino de Montreal

I have been several times. They are in the process of remodeling, in my opinion, for the worst. Rooms are closed off and nothing feels open enough. I would visit if you have a few hours to kill, but there are many other areas for site seeing in Montreal.

Worst casino I have ever been to. Other people can piggy back off your spot which is very annoying. I can say even the worst casino in the U.S. is many levels better than what you will experience in Montreal. Getting there is a pain in the ass too. You can take the cab which costs around $40 or so. If you opt for public transportation you have to take the metro then you have to take that damn bus which takes forever to arrive.

Love the city of Montreal. The women. The laid back atmosphere. The restaurants. Every thing about it. Except for the damn casino.

Reason for it being terrible is because it is not privately owned. It is owned by the local government. That is why it sucks. Damn socialism.

But hey.... the women there are amazing!

thanks to everyone for the replies. I went to the montreal casino last weekend and am reporting back in case anybody looks for info in the future.

It wasn't nearly as bad as the online reviews make it sound.
Yes, the setup of the building itself is pretty ridiculous and confusing.
Yes, the lack of alcohol while gambling is very odd.

In the end though, i found a blackjack table w/ plenty of room, nice dealers and a fun table. They have a lot of tables, though it was pretty crowded on a saturday night. If roulette is your thing, i believe they had single zero at the $10 level which is pretty unusual. The casino itself is nice and new feeling.

Getting there wasn't bad at all. Metro to bus to casino. I bought a 3 day public transportation pass so it was all "free". The buses were lined up 3 deep when we got off the metro.

When i commented on the crazy lack of alcohol, the dealer mentioned that it may change in 2 months. Not sure if that's wishful thinking, or if there's really a legal change coming up.
