Before this weekend, I hadn’t thought much about dealer call outs while playing blackjack. I understand the rationale of dealer call outs when exchanging money for chips. This weekend a dealer made a call out when the player next to me doubled down on a hard 12 vs 2. Obviously he was not following basic strategy.

So my question is this: Which unusual plays do blackjack dealers typically call out?

I've heard them do the same call out as you mentioned when somebody had doubled with 12 or more. I'm sure I've heard a few others but the only thing I can really think of hearing "table max" at the $5 table at my local casino and I've also had the dealer call out an amount when he paid me a blackjack that was over $100.

the reason is to protect the casino ,same when some body hits on a hard 17 or more and yes ive seen it.it let the pit bosses know so the customer cant argue that the dealer made a mistake.

My father in law hit on a hard 17 once against a dealer 9. He was so drunk that he was not following the hand closely enough. The dealer called it out, "Hitting on a hard 17" and the pit boss said to go ahead. When my FIL broke he started to scream that he did not want a hit. The pit boss came over and told the dealer to take the money that he had heard him call it out. At that time my FIL proceeded to start dropping F bombs directed toward the dealer, the pit boss and the security guards that were there one minute later. That was the end of the night at the Mandalay Bay for our party...:beer::beer:

I hear things like "purple action", "cheques play", "pumpkins play" and "table max plays seat 8".

At the Barbary Coast and Orleans we called out all buyins (wait for approval on any amount over $100), hitting hard 17+, splitting 10s, doubling on any hand that could bust, cheques play on any wager of $100+ (once was enough, if you bet black once @ coast resorts you had the PB's attention lol), foreign cheques coming in, coloring up-black/white/yellow going out... all I can think of off the top of my head but I left the business 9 years ago.

Also, "doubling for less" if you do not double down for the full amount of your initial bet.

"marker" - player sits down and requests a marker

"marker redemption" - player is cashing in chips to pay off a marker they took

Binions way back in the day... I was playing and was dealt a 10 and a 2 against a dealer 2. I said double and put out another green chip.

Player doubling on a bust hand...

    I got the 9 for 21.... Woohoo!

Interesting because that is not a bust hand.

How is a hard 12 not a bust hand?

Dealers call out to their floors/pits when the play isn't the norm to let them know that the player is making bets that MAY mean they are card counting so that the pit can keep an eye on said player.

I made the same mistake the first time I read his post. I thought he said he was doubling a 10 against a 2. I didn't realize he said he was dealt a 10 and 2 against a 2.

I wish the dealer would yell: Moron hitting with 12 or more when the dealer is showing a 6.

"Splitting 5s," "doubling hard 12," and "hitting hard 17" are the main ones that come to mind for me...at least that don't involve chips or money being exchanged. I've seen dealers call out "purple in play" if someone suddenly goes from betting $50 to betting $500, but I think that's just to let the pit boss know, in case he wants to observe the person more closely

Remember, the main reason for 'checks play', 'black action', etc. is so the pit boss will see and have a chance to adjust the player's average bet. The fact that this MIGHT indicate a player is counting cards is only secondary. The pit boss can't detect anything from observing a single or multiple large bets, because he doesn't have time to count the deck.

No, it's to keep the floorman informed. It has zero to do with keeping the players TotalRewards card up-to-date. A floorman can be responsible for 4-8 tables and obviously can not know everything that happens on every table.

I don't know about you, but whenever I hear someone doubling on a bust card, I am usualy not at that table much longer.... No matter how big or small I am betting...

A small racino a few hours from me finally got approved for card games a few years back. I went up to check it out a week or two after the tables opened. “Doubling hard 12” was called out about every 30 seconds (and even the occasional “doubling hard 13/14”). Not the brightest group of gamblers, that crowd! :rolleyes2:

This has never made sense to me. Whether or not the rest of the table is playing "by the book" does absolutely nothing to change your odds of winning. While a player playing "wrong" may end up taking the dealers bust card, it has just as much chance of causing the dealer to bust when he would have otherwise made a hand. Mathmatically over the long run it means nothing.

a few I have not seen yet:

    • "shuffle"
    • "rolling" (as they turn the deck from face down onto it's side after the shuffle)
    • "card" (when a player gives the dealer a players card)
    • "surrender" (usually the first time it get's played at a table)
    • "TOWEL!" (when you spill your drink on the table :drunk: )
