More of a review/endorsement

A few buddies and I just got back from a weekend trip. We had originally booked a room on the strip but ended up staying DT after the first night.

This place was packed from Thurs > Sun. Dealers were great, attractive and very friendly as were the people playing at the joint. Rooms were on the small side but clean and modern. The 2 person shower got alot of work {more to come in the TR :evillaugh} only thing I did not like was the sliding door.

Acess to Freemont street is quick and easy. Drinks service is solid.

Totally agree! GG is always a blast. If they'd just update the old bathrooms, it would be perfect. But I love everything else about it. It's a party all the time.

Does anybody remember the old piano they used to play in the casino? It was a quieter environment and less party-like, but something tranquil about the whole thing.

 

yes the piano player and the great deli at the back that was always busy that they closed.

 

Wish they would bring that deli back. Right, it was always busy. I have to believe they're losing some revenue after removing it. It's just not the same going over to Du Pars to grab the shrimp cocktail (although it still tastes as good as ever).

 

The bathroom I had was brand new will all Kolher fixtures. I liked it.

 

I've been offered comps at the GG, but never stayed there -- maybe I will now. I've always loved the casino -- it's great Old School!

 

It gets my vote. The girls who work there are not only hot but very friendly whilst dealing the games. A little different from my strip experiences.

Also, a beer and a shot of wild turkey at the bar was $9. I mean, whats not to like???

 

I double booked a few years ago and this was the look of the bathroom. If they are updating, that would be a great thing.

 

I walked around downtown a bit last trip down a couple weeks ago and I like the new Golden Gate's vibe, the blue-hairs and oxygen tanks have moved on down the road.

 

Noooo!! Nothing like that. I did not get a pic but the bathroom was single sink and I want to say light slate finish. The shower was a single huge glass door with 2 shower heads inside. One was a water fall head the other normal. I 99% sure it was room 400. Think i paid $57 for the night.

 

The location of that sink saved my life on my last trip (last October).

I slipped in the shower, and the whole thing moved to slow motion. I tried to pivot so I could fall into the shower wall, but never got there. Ended up with my face to the shower wall and fell butt first... and landed square on the edge of the sink.

Hurt like hell to sit down that day, but I am certain that if the bathroom was bigger and that sink wasn't there, I am cracking my head open on the tile floor.

 

I hit DuPars in feb for my first time, I always hit the casino- every trip I have loved the place since my first time in there.

That cocktail sauce in the shrimp has some strong ass horseradish in it, and it is the way it is supposed to be. Will definitely hit DuPars and get the shrimp every trip from now on.

 

I've read many people say the rooms are small. How are they compared to say the Vintage Rooms at EC or the rooms ar Gold Spike, which are both small?
I am usually solo so huge rooms aren't necessary. How is the comfort level compared to those two?

My last trip I was in rm 407 on the west side with a view of The Plaza. I had the same tired bath as Joe and here's a pic of the room. West side rooms catch the FSE noise bouncing off The Plaza so bring some earplugs. Otherwise it was clean and cozy but it's so small I wouldn't want to share it with anyone.

Room 400 is probably one of the newer "Suites" on the south side. I was walking by and asked a maid if I could get some shots of a Suite. She wouldn't let me in the room but here's a couple of shots of what I could see from the door.

 

I stayed in room 405 for 4 nights a couple of weeks ago. I had no noise issues. The room was small, but the bed was very comfortable. Flat screen TV, Keurig coffee maker & bottled water were available in the room for a $2 charge. The bathroom was very small, but functional; no bathtub, just a shower stall which was fine by me. My buddy had room 201 which was larger and the bathroom had recently been remodeled and was much larger. I stayed in one of the rooms facing FSE last December and would not suggest staying in one of those. The room was fine, but the noise from the bands and crowd below made it impossible to sleep.

The dealers are super at the Gate; I always have a good time at the blackjack tables-even when I'm losing. Cocktail service is a little slow during the afternoon, but very good at night. Bartenders are cheerful and quick to get you another drink while you are playing VP at the bar. Dupar's---good service and never had a bad meal there. Tipping the dealers, CW's and valets, will get their attention. Tipped the cocktail waitress $2 a drink last time I stayed there---I think I have a friend for life.

BJ rules are okay, much better than the strip. Five dollar tables are usually dealt from a CSM while a $10 table is dealt from an 8 deck shoe. Double down on any hand, double after split, no re-splitting Aces and BJ pays 3:2. I know I can find better rules at the El Co, but I never have any fun playing there. I play for the enjoyment of the game; not trying to win my kid's college tuition money.

Plan on staying there in June for 2 or 3 nights. Comps have been pretty good. I usually bet $10-20/hand and last month they comped me 4 nights.

 

great info right there, thanks! Am staying at the El Co as usual, but never really thought about their bj tables until you mentioned that, and come to think of it i often find myself kind of bored playing there. I'll try the GG in a few weeks!

 

I've always had a fun time at the GG. Never stayed there, and by the looks of the tiny bathrooms its probably a good thing. However the staff is always friendly and I like the vibe.

 

This is one of the only casinos downtown I have not spent anytime playing at,( I plan to remedy that this trip). Everyone seems to dig the vibe of this place, don't steer me wrong.

Place is great and i would highly recommend it. I also had fun at the D which kinda has the same vibe.

The only thing that I miss downtown is the lack of a quality sports book. Large comfy chairs and the like.

On a side note. Is the Plaza always such a ghost town? Had dinner at their steak house {one in the front with a view of freemount} and did a wonder of the casino afterwards. Totally dead.
