What a terrible article, he's writing at the right paper.

He mentions what vegas was at for 2000, but doesn't mention the numbers for the 3 years until 2003? He doesn't take note that just maybe americans being afraid to fly for a couple years may have put a damper on things, and not some sort of crisis of Vegas interest?

And he says Vegas used to grow at 10 to 20 percent per year, but then trumpets 15 percent over a DECADE as a big win?

Celines show and the others did very well for themselves.

Just a lazy, terrible article where he starts with his subject matter (Canadians with Vegas shows) and then tries to construct a flimsy bigger picture.

I guessed I used the wrong terminology and should have said an interesting point of view. It's not the first time however that I've heard Celine being credited with giving Vegas a reboot.

I usually don't pay much attention to the Star given it's leanings and agree with your assessment of their quality.

The only thing I like at that paper is Richard Griffin.

Also according to this article "Zummanity" is X-Rated. Either you canadians have a different view on censorship, or they really updated the quality of the show. Is Cirque doing full one on one fornicating during aerobatic stunts now?

As silly as it is to go with the headline, he does mention probably the largest vegas show draws by volume of attendees. What percentage of travelers go to Vegas with one of those shows as their primary reason would be interesting to know. It takes a significant amount of potential for Caesars to build an entire stadium primarily for one singer. It is kinda funny at the end of the article. Canadians, blah blah awesome, blah blah oh and the other big factor is that Steve Wynn guy. heh

While this guy may credit Celine with the boost for Vegas, I think its really a different Canadian who did it. Apparently this guy forgot the "Royal Flusher effect". Now THAT'S a Canadian who's an asset to the Vegas community!

    I saw that.

I don't think people go to Vegas just so they can see shows be it Cedine Lion, or Sir Q du Solayl...

but I will say the first thing people ask me when I get back (after why do you keep going there and did you win?) is "Did you see any shows???"

So maybe there is something to it.

Heh, that's always the second question asked of me after "Did you win?"

    The essence of it...

So I agree the details are exaggerated and sloppy. Saved? Maybe. I look at Reno compared to Vegas and see how without upgrading, Reno lost the battle against local tribal casinos.

But I think that the trifecta of the renewal/revival of New Vegas is Steve Wynn, Cirque, and Celine.

It seems to be contradictory opinions to praise Wynn's vision (and his execution of it) yet bemoan the reduction of the low/mid price range. But he has been the driving force in the luxury movement of the hotels.

Cirque doesn't need much explanation. The production shows have been so successful they added six or seven more.

It seems to me the only big time shows that were in town around 2000 was Mr. Wayne Newton and Sigfried & Roy. Otherwise, correct me if I'm wrong, there was mostly past-their-prime singers and lounge acts. Celine not only showed that a prime time singer could fill a showroom but that she could fill one twice thenormal size, do it for double the usual price, and attract women to pay it. Definitely a shift away from Mr. Newton.

And can I add a fourth? Whoever put in Studio 54 and started the nightclub trend. That paved the way for twentysomethings to boost the visitor numbers past last year's record for several years in a row. And they will keep coming well into their middle age. Because the hotel owners found out a way to get a new demographic in town.
