    Hi,

Do all casinos allow you to have the cheat sheet chart on the table with you? NYNY did last time I was there. Is it 'bad form' or nerdy to do so?

    Thanks

You can definitely use a basic strategy chart at any casino. However, some of them may not let you set it on the table and may want you to hold it/keep it in your pocket. But you can look at it whenever you want while you play, just don't take forever and slow the game down for others.

Not sure how big your chart is, but I've never seen a casino get upset if a player has one of the small ones, about the size of a playing card - they sell them in the gift shop for you to use.

For the casino it doesn't really matter because in the end no matter how closely you follow they still have the house advantage.

For other players at the table: you should have at least the basics down pat as other players might get mad if you are wasting their time and have to constantly keep referencing your card, even on the simple/obvious plays.

Are the gift shop cards trustworthy? Are they the same as on wizard of odds site?

They'll be close, but might be slightly off depending on the rules you're playing. For example, there are a few differences between correct play for dealer stand on soft 17 and dealer hit on soft 17 (and by a few, I mean you can count them on the fingers of one hand.) Those differences will have very little effect.

Pretty sure if you keep going to your pocket that they will tell you to stop. They pretty much like to see both hands on the table.

Seriously? I never heard that. They want to see both your hands at all times?? What's next? Patting us down before we sit at the table?

I keep a basic strategy wallpaper on my phone and just put it up whenever I go to a casino. So if I forget some hand I just pull out my phone and look at the screen real quick. They never cared even though you're not supposed to use your phone at the table.

I play at the Bellagio and always keep a gift shop strategy card right next to my chip stacks on the table. All my buddies do the same, and some of them are yellow chip players. The only casino that didn't let us have them on the table was the Wynn.
Very often other players will ask what the book play is if they see the card, it starts conversations and doesn't slow the play down if you are looking at the cards as they come out.

Just a helpful hint if you're using a card...try not to be the first player to act at the table. If you're sitting a bit to the left, you'll have more time to consult your card before it's your turn to play.

Unless you're at a table with me, at which point, take your time. Slow it down, because I'm getting comps based on hours I play, not number of hands :peace:

I use my set all of the time and have never been hassled at the table. I put mine on the table and refer to it when needed so I can quickly look down and see what my play is (unless I have a pair and then I have to turn the card over).

I try to play where BJ is being dealt face up where I never touch the cards. I also try to sit at 3rd or 4th base so I have extra time to figure out what my play is by the time my turn comes around.

Go to Amazon and search "blackjack strategy card" and look for the set of six cards. All you will ever need and you will have perfect strategy for any BJ variation you find.

And if you do get static for using it at the table I would find another property to play at because there is no reason for them to hassle you.

Slightly off subject...sorry....I am a low roller but have a fair amount of BJ experience. WE never, never mind a noob at a low stakes table....ask questions...we will help. Sometimes I ask for help.....and gladly take it. What irks me is the guy who's had plenty of time to consider his hand and makes us all wait while he agonizes over his decision. He's not looking for help.....he just wants us to see his pain and thought process and inflated importance....anyone know what I mean??

I print a small strategy card off the internet to the size of a pack of cigarettes. Then I just slip it in the pack and keep my smokes on the table right next to my stack of chips. When ever I need it I can just glance down and it's right there. No one even notices it.

This is exactly what I do. They never care cuz you're really just glancing at the screen and I usually don't raise the phone above the table when I take it out so they rarely even notice.

If you need a cheat sheet, you are no threat to them, believe me. Sometimes you will have a guy that keeps checking his card and the dealer will just tell him what to do every time, to help speed things up.

Plenty of times, I've had dealers tell me the wrong play...especially on soft 18... but even on doubling with 11 vs Ace.

If I stand on a 4 card hard-16 against their 7 or better showing, it is only because one of my hits drew a 4 or 5. In such cases, the correct play is to stand. Dealers (and many other players) don't seem to get that.

I usually keep a customized strategy card with me that only shows the unusual or non-standard plays - this helps when I'm tired or a bit inebriated.
(Yes - I'm one of those guys who doubles the A8 against the dealer 6!)

Only dicks would mind a noob asking for help whether it be on a low limit or high limit table. I don't play HIGH but largely at $100 tables and the same type of person there that would mind a noob asking for help is the same type of person who would mind at $5 table...just someone who's a dick.

I completely agree about the overly dramatic people at the table who suffer from a mix of misery and conceit.

I can't tell you how many times I've gotten into "debates" with dealers. I never give someone advice on their hands unless they ask. Then I always tell them "the book says do blah blah blah". A lot of times dealers don't know shit. Like on the hands you mentioned, another common one is 12 v 2 or 12 v 3. I realize the EV of hitting/standing is small but when the dealer says the right play is standing or the book says to stand they are being factually wrong. I usually see dealers say you should take even money on your BJs with a dealer ace. I have no qualms over anyone doing that, I've done it a few times when my luck was awful and everything was going wrong. But when a dealer tries to tell a player that its the "right move" they are wrong. The only way to objectively call a decision right or wrong is based on the numbers. Then go ahead and use your gut to go the other way if you want, but they shouldn't be making up their own facts.

OMG yes I can't stand making a adv play like this and have someone yell at me, "you have 16!!" Yeah buddy I know. I try explaining to them that the 16 vs dealer 7 showing is very close to 50/50 and if you have a little bit more information with the cards showing on the table it makes sense to stand. It won't matter, I am still wrong because I didn't do what their little card says to do. They don't know the assumptions and limitations made when they made the BS card. The truth is, as soon as cards are dealt out and are taken from the full deck/shoe, the percentages and correct plays printed on that card have changed.........sigh oh well:grrr:

You are correct, that can and does happen sometimes, I was talking about the people who have to check to see if they should hit that 15 vs a 7, or double 10 vs 8, etc.

And if you sit at the last position you'll have more time to consult your card and have your decision ready to go. Won't be much more time, but even a few seconds can be enough.
