I have an upcoming stay at the Riv booked through a host. It will be my first visit to the property. The great odds at the tables (including a great offer the host extended me), and that classic Vegas that I miss, have attracted me to give them a shot.

But I am getting a little worried after reading some of these reviews on Tripadvisor- including a picture of a bedbug in the room! I am somewhat of a clean freak, but as long as the room is clean, and everything freshly laundered; I don't care if the furniture is old.

Is the property really that bad? Old I dont mind. Stinky and dirty will be a problem... big problem. I had heard they did some recent renovations but I don't know many details about that. Is there any suite that I should request that is sure to be clean/renovated? What are some thoughts from VMBer's who have stayed there recently?

I have stayed there a few years ago and thought it was nice. clean. Looked renovated. Just ask for a renovated room.
Bed bugs can be anywhere so learn how to look for them and keep your stuff off the floor.
I had the buffet in Jan. and advise you to skip it unless you get it for free. All the food reminded me of frozen tv dinners. The desserts were amatuer like rice crispy treats ( prob stale cereal from bkfst buffet) edge dipped in choc chip melt.Creme brulee staged without the brulee ( prob instant pudding).
I did enjoy the old vegas entertainer pics . Be sure to see the ones by the comedy club. We did see the comedy show for free (thanks American casino guide) it was good but I wouldnt have wanted to pay for it.
Slots are tight and the casino lacks "the vibe" that vegas regulars pick up on.

I honestly can say I didn't have much problem with it. The rooms have been renovated and, well it was...ok. Nothing dirty and such.

My biggest problem was location. It really sucks.

North of Riv is the perpetually unfinished Fontainebleau
South of Riv is the proposed Triple-Five casino (so nothing).
    Circus, Circus across the street
South of Circus, Circus is the just started Resorts World Las Vegas (so nothing....for a long stretch).

The only thing ok is that there's a bus stop directly in front of and across the street of the Riv.
LVH Casino is directly behind Riv (a nice walk tho')
The monorail is directly behind Riv (with LVH).

The Monaco tower contains their nicest rooms. That would be the tower to ask for. You could also ask at check in about upgrading for a small fee to a mini suite or one bedroom suite, make sure you ask for an updated one.
As noted the buffet is terrible. R Steak and Seafood however is excellent as is the Queen Victoria Pub. You've also got the steakhouse at circus circus across the street and all the offerings at Wynn/Encore ten minutes away by foot.
    Have a great time!

    Get a 3 day bus pass ($20).

You aren't near anything except maybe the Wynn (as previous poster said 10 minutes walk).

The bus comes every 10-15 minutes tho' 24 hours a day.

I agree with everything mentioned about the rooms being clean and the location being horrible. The Monaco Tower is great and the renovated rooms were done well. It's not high class by any means, but it's good for the price and the employees are usually great. As long as you're realistic, you should be happy with the Riv. Enjoy!

Stayed there last not 6 months ago. I thought rooms were decent and clean - nothing to complain about. Casino floor however is another story. Casino always seems slow. Just 2 weeks ago my mother and I were passing thru and she said it was creepy. Slots were very tight. Tables, well, there is like 5 table games going. Not even sure if I can remember a craps table open the several times I have been there last 2 years. If you drink miller lites this is the place to be since it cost $2 a bottle.

So my conclusion: Nice rooms horrible casino.

One thing Riv has going for it is that it can now claim to be the oldest resort on the strip. R.I.P. Sahara...

A friend of mine stayed there a couple years ago, he got a standard room that turned out to be decent.

    He had no complaints.

Naturaleight, when's your stay going to be? I'll be in Vegas starting the 17th and one of the hotels I'm staying at is the Riv. I usually just get a regular renovated room, but I can take some pics for you if you'd like.

April 10th. I'm booked in a 1 bedroom suite, but any pictures of the rooms and common areas would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Spenmd a night at the Riv a few years back. I don't really have any complaints, the room was old and a bit rundown but everything was clean. Have enjoyed a number of meals at the coffee shop.

I think for what you are looking for thje Riv will be fine.

    Enjoy your trip.
