I am new to VP and starting to get into it. I know the strategy of JoB. Does the strategy change when you play DDB or DB or TDB? I know the pay tables are different than JoB so I wondered if that changed the strategy on what to hold. Obviously Deuces wild changes the strategy.

    Thanks

Strategy changes enough that it is worth your while to either get a strategy chart / learn the game for any non JOB game.

For beginners, 9 (Full House) / 6 (Flush) Jacks or Better is the best game due to the fact that it is the easiest to learn advanced strategy and it has the lower variance level (vs. 10/7 DB or FPDW / NSUD).

Laminated strategy cards are generally $6 (Gamblers Book Store, Online - just google it), or you can print them free online for 9/6 JOB, 10/7 DB or FPDW. They are well worth the investment, even for recreational players who play once a year in Vegas.

Yes, there are lots of little nuances that are different - and important. For example, with DDB if you get two pair and one of those pair is AA, you dump the first pair and go with the AA (payout is same for two pair as for one and the chance of a full house is offset by the huge payouts on 4OAK A's or A's with kicker). Little things like that.

My best training aide is an iPhone App - WinPoker or one of the two or three similar apps. For maybe 3 weeks before a Vegas trip I practice with all the brands of VP I plan to play until the moves are just instinctual. I still make errors but they are much fewer with a couple weeks of practice.

That looks like a very helpful tool. Any for BlackBerry?

Are there any websites I can access on the phone internet while playing that analyze hands?

I found one on Wizard of Odds: http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/analyzer/
    It has every poker variation.

But I'm not sure it would work on the phone internet.

Wizard has tables you can print...not sure how they'd do on a blackberry though. Probably not good.

Not sure... but WinPoker is available for the PC.

    Check out WinPoker at -

    http://www.zamzone.com/

The other apps that are like it are -

VP Wizard (from the folks at Wizard of Odds)

    http://wizardofodds.com/apps/vpwizard/

    and

Best of Video Poker (from the folks at VideoPoker.com - ipad only)

    http://www.videopoker.com/ipad/

People have been complaining about lack of these for Android for some time - probably an even harder job to find one for Blackberry. I guess I would recommend WinPoker for PC - which would at least let you practice on your laptop....

The WinPoker and VP Wizard Apps have hand analyzers built in - where you can type in a hand that is stumping you and it will give you the best play.

There is another iPhone App that is designed to tell you the calculated payout from a VP machine's paytable - which for me is helpful in knowing how bad a machine I am considering might be. Here's the Android listing for this app (also on iTunes) -

Wizard's strategy calculator on the website works on my g/f's android phone, it's just slower/not as easy to use on the smartphone. I try to look at strategies on the actual computer if I remember to ahead of time.

And as others have already said, strategy changes enough between the games that you should look at a strategy for that game, but you'll notice there are quite a few similarities as well.

If you want to see the difference in cost when playing almost any VP game look at some of the pages that I have put together.
The first one shows the cost of using strategy for the correct game, but the wrong pay schedule. http://www.videopokerhelp.net/diff_strat.htm

The next one shows the return when using the wrong strategy.
    http://www.videopokerhelp.net/wrong_strat.html

This one shows the cost of always using the strategy for the reset royal as the progressive goes up. http://www.videopokerhelp.net/progressive_strat.htm
